He came to Gould excited about alpine ski racing. His excitement and enthusiasm for the sport grew right along with his athletic prowess. Dedicated coaches became his mentors. They inspired him to become a coach himself. And coach he has—at all levels, across the United States and around the world. Today, he is the men’s head alpine coach for the U.S. Ski Team.

An individualized education wasn’t really an option at her large, crowded public high school in Korea. She came to Gould to take full advantage of themusic program. She made the

friends who encouraged her tofollow her passion for singing. She did, transferring out of a psychology major at one college and into BerkleeCollege of Music. Now she’s a rising Korean pop star. And her Gould friends enjoy saying they knew her when her stage was the dorm they shared.

He was no stranger to hard work. Jobs in retail during the summers and school breaks helped him supplement the scholarship he had received from Gould. Faculty, his fellow students and coursework introduced him to foreign cultures. He discovered he felt comfortable and confident in

a global community. More hard work and a new focus led him to senior positions in a number of global luxury retail companies, including Gucci, Burberry and Prada.

She was a young woman who came to Gould wondering if she would fit in with peers who seemed to come from a different world. She soon discovered creativity, not conformity, is what Gould cares about. She followed her interest in science to MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Armed with her Ph.D., she is now a Chemistry professor at Mt. Holyoke College, and a visiting professor in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, where she inspires other young people.

by playing his flute for camp guards. Adopted by a minister in New Hampshire after fleeing

A Maine native, he discovered and developed aremarkable talent for art at Gould. By graduation, he had learned to work in wood and metal and was turning out distinctive sculpture and furniture. He went

on to Rhode Island School of Design, then returned to Maine to settle down in an 18th

century farmhouse. Now he creates custom cabinetry and furniture in

his own way and on his own terms by using clean energy

and recycled material.

Every Gould student has a unique story. Our close-knit living and learning community shares a common mission and passion. We are unswervingly dedicated to helping our students discover their talents, find their paths and forge their own definitions of personal success. Our community encourages kids to be bold, to try and fail and then try again, to challenge ideas, conventions and preconceptions in a process of self-discovery and self-definition. The time-honored “Gould endeavor” calls for the energy to try, the willingness to risk and the capacity to persevere. This is how our students find out who they are. This is how kids learn to remain true to that knowledge in a world filled with contradiction and confusion.

We’ve done this for almost two centuries. We have not and will not lose thisfocus, because Gould Academy remains true to its traditions and values. But now we have a new, bold vision for Gould and you are an integral part of it. With your help, we can work together for a greater Gould— a Gould that can meet the challenge of educating students to live in an increasingly interconnected world. A Gould that, thanks to your support, draws the strongest faculty,

has truly outstanding facilities and programs, and is financially secure and environmentally sustainable.

Turning this vision into reality will take significant resources— $22 million, to be specific. It’s an ambitious goal and more money than Gould has ever attempted to raise. But at this point in our 175-year history, the astoundingly rapid rate of change in the world means standing still will cause us to lose ground. Moving ahead boldly is our only option. Succeeding will require the loyalty and support of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends. We invite you to remain true to Gould. To be True Blue.

Through rigorous research and careful priority setting, we’ve set a goal of raising $22 million over five years. With this money, we will successfully

meet our goals of improving the quality of life for our faculty, fully renovating Hanscom Hall, and taking powerful measures to ensure long-term financial sustainability for Gould Academy. With your support, Gould can continue to attract and retain the students who benefit most from our unique education—and attract and retain the faculty to support, challenge and encourage those students for another 175 years.

The vision is bold; the need is real; the cause is worthy. To be able to educate students in the Gould tradition within the context of a rapidly changing world is a challenge we gratefully accept. With your help, Gould will achieve unprecedented success while remaining true to the school’s past, values and vision—and become recognized as one of the best small boarding schools in the country.

We invite you to share in the challenge.
