SHIRU LADONAI SHIR CHADASH (PSALM 96) TEHILIM 964
O sing unto HaShem a new song; sing unto HaShem, all the earth. Sing unto HaShem, bless His name; proclaim His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples. For great is HaShem, and highly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are things of nought; but HaShem made the heavens. Honour and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary. Ascribe unto HaShem, ye kindred of the peoples, ascribe unto HaShem glory and strength. Ascribe unto HaShem the glory due unto His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts. O worship HaShem in the beauty of holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth. Say among the nations: 'The HaShem reigneth.' The world also is established that it cannot be moved; He will judge the peoples with equity. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof; Let the field exult; and all that is therein; then shall all the trees of the wood sing for joy; Before HaShem, for He is come; for He is come to judge the earth; He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples in His faithfulness.

D’VARTORAH–SHABBAT8SIVAN5771
This week’s torah portion is Beha’alotecha (בהעלתך). The parasha begins at
Numbers 8:1 and ends at Numbers 12:16. This week’s corresponding haftarah
is found among the Books of the Prophets – Zechariah 2:14 – 4:7.
All torah parashot are connected thematically to their hartarah portions. What
links this week’s parasha is a description and an explanation of the rituals
associated with the Temple Menorah. Below is a photograph of the most
famous historical depiction of the Temple Menorah.
The image above is a detail of the Arch of Titus in Rome. It depicts victorious
Roman soldiers, who fought under Emperors Vespasian and Titus, carrying the
solid gold menorah back to Ancient Rome. To the victor, go the spoils.
Do not confuse the Temple Menorah with the Chanukah Menorah. Does
anybody know the difference?
That the Temple Menorah was made out of gold is specifically mentioned in
this week’s parasha and haftorah. Indeed, Numbers 8:4 decrees that the
menorah be made of solid gold: “.המנרה מקשה זהב” And in Zachariah 4:2 we find
a similar phrasing: .מנרת זהב
Of the many interpretations of the lit menorah, is the explanation that the
emanating firelight is symbolizes God’s eyes keeping watch on the world.
