RECORD NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS FOR TRUST CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL MARATHON
DALLAS, Texas-‐ Trust Children’s Research Hospital has a record number of 900 participants in their annual marathon. The race will start at the American Airline’s Center in Dallas, Texas on Sept. 16. The marathon is a race hosted to raise money for new additions to Trust Children’s Research Hospital. Trust Children’s Research Hospital has hosted the event for nine years. “We host the race annually to raise money for the patients and also as a fun event for the community,” Sara Fevurly, communications director for Trust Children’s Research Hospital, said. “The money raised is critical to our survival as a hospital.” The hospital has a $1 million goal for this year’s marathon. The race organizers anticipate another 100 runners will register. All proceeds will be used to build a cardiology wing of the hospital. The 2012 featured marathon competitor is Megan Horton, a heart transplant recipient in 2005. Horton has spent more than a year training to compete in the marathon. “The cardiology wing is near to my heart,” Horton said. “I want to do anything I can for this hospital because the doctors and nurses at Trust saved my life.” Registration for runners is $100, and the public is allowed to walk the 5K for $25. The event will include a concert and a playground area for children. Registration will close on Aug. 16.

PEDIATRIC HEART TRANSPLANT PATIENT PLANS TO RUN IN MARATHON DALLAS, Texas-‐ The young woman laces up her tennis shoes and races out the door to battle the cold Oklahoma weather during her daily run at 5 a.m. with the same determination as any other marathon competitor. However, for runner Megan Horton, 18, participating in a marathon represents overcoming an additional challenge. Six years ago, Horton received a heart transplant from Trust Children’s Research Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She is now training to run in the Trust Children’s Research Hospital Marathon. “Heart transplant patients can lead normal lives and can go on to do extraordinary things,” Horton said. “Trust Children’s Research Hospital has given me a second chance, and I want to compete in their marathon to inspire other patients.” In 2005, Horton received a heart transplant after she was diagnosed with a rare pediatric disease that ravaged her heart. Horton waited three days on the national waiting list for a heart. Dr. Mark Smith, a pediatric heart surgeon at Trust Children’s Research Hospital, completed the transplant within 12 hours. On Sept. 16, Horton will join 900 marathon participants running to raise funds for the Trust Children’s Research Hospital. The marathon raised $750,000 last year. With the funds, the hospital was able to build a cancer wing of the hospital. “We host the race annually to raise money for the patients and also as a fun event for the community,” Sara Fevurly, communications director for Trust Children’s Research Hospital, said. “The money raised is critical to our survival as a hospital.” The hospital has a $1 million goal for this year’s marathon. The race has 900 participant registered. The race organizers anticipate another 100 runners will register. All proceeds will be used to build a cardiology wing of the hospital. “The hospital has been in need of a new cardiology wing with updated technology for several years,” Fevurly said. “We cannot accomplish this important goal without help from our community. We hope the community will come out and support our cause.”

Horton is a sohpomore at Oklahoma State University, and she is studying strategic communication. Horton plans to attend graduate school after completing her undergraduate degree.
Sara Fevurly, the communications director for Trust Children’s Research Hospital, considers her job an honor. She has worked at the hospital for nine years as a member of the communications department. She started working at the hospital after her younger sister, Amanda, was a patient. Fevurly fell in love with the employees, patients and mission of the hospital. “Helping the children is my life calling,” she said. Fevurly has dedicated her life to fundraising for the hospital and communicating the mission of the hospital to the public. The marathon was started the year Fevurly started at the hospital. Fevurly is a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a degree in strategic communications and minors in entrepreneurship and marketing. Fevurly graduated law school at University of Kansas. Fevurly has never been an avid runner, but she is proud of the amount of money and success the marathon has provided for the hospital in the last few years.
