HELLO.We’ve been waiting for you.

We’re so glad you’re here.

We’ll show you the places to go,

the things you don’t know

and all that’s on show.

If you need a barber, dry cleaner,

or some lunch on the run,

a dentist, great coffee or

maybe just some fun…

You’ll find it all here and so very near.

Take a look, take a read.

This little booklet has been made just for you.

With recommendations, invitations

and special offers too,

we’re sure that you’ll find there’s plenty here for you.

WHAT’S THIS CITY CENTRE ALL ABOUT?Well, we’re the fifth largest city in the country and enjoying fast-paced growth. More businesses and people are coming here (just like you). That means there’s more to do and more to see.

Our stunning iconic waterfront location makes this a beautiful place to come to work each day.

Outside of your work hours enjoy our huge selection of cafes, bars and restaurants across the city centre. Check out the Wharf St Dining Precinct and The Strand for some of our iconic eateries.

There’s great shopping too. As the civic, cultural and commercial heart of the region you can find anything from a pair of socks to a council permit.

Soak up some art and culture in our galleries and open spaces.

Bike to work or take the bus. It’s easy to get around in our city centre.

Not sure where to find something? Just ask. We’re a friendly bunch and want you to feel welcome in the city centre.

TURN THE PAGE. We’ve asked some of our city centre colleagues to recommend to you some great places to go and things you might not know to make the most of our city centre.

QUICK TIPIf you’re driving in the city centre there’s a ten minute parking grace period on the parking meters…and there’s free parking after three!

“I love that I can order a roast pork or chicken from Classic Cut Butchers on Devonport Road in the morning and they roast it for me at no extra charge so I can pick it up piping hot before I

go home at the end of the day.” Fiona Corkery

Mainstreet Tauranga

“If you are a reader, there is no better bookshop on the planet than Books-

A-Plenty on Grey Street. All avid readers themselves, they can help

you select just the right book for your reading tastes and help introduce you to diverse literary worlds you will not

have imagined.” Annie Hill

Priority One

“My tip – a tranquil retreat is the tropical flower house and rose

garden at Cliff Road.” Cr. Catherine Stewart

“If you’re looking for a local barber in the city (and really close to Durham

Street) try Carve Barbershop on Grey Street. As they say ‘it’s not just

a haircut’.” Steven Vincent

Basestation

“I love Bravo in Red Square as it’s a great place to meet people, enjoy a

coffee and discuss matters with them.” Cr Bev Edlin

“On a sunny day, what better place to have lunch and soak up the crowd atmosphere whilst either socialising

or talking business, than at one of the many great venues on The Strand.”

Scott McKenzie Property Managers Group

For many years my ‘go to place’ for my swimwear, lingerie or hoisery has been Langton’s Lingerie &

Swimwear in Grey Street. Delys Williams has owned it for over

eight years, and has a very unique understanding of her products, as do her team. They’re open seven days

and have a loyalty programme.” Nancy Hogg

Bravo Café, Restaurant & Bar

“The great thing about Downtown Tauranga is that we have an awesome

little community. People like Apple from Green Apple on Spring Street

with her wonderful selection of summer gear, the boys from Bivouac on Willow Street who always have an idea for my next camping trip, Shane and the team at House of Travel on

Willow Street who never miss a beat. We all know each other’s name, wave

across the road and stop for achat – like great friends from

the neighbourhood.” Susanne Irwin

Robert Harris Coffee Roasters

“If you live in the Mount or Papamoa and own a bike, I’d suggest parking your car around Owens Place and

enjoying a short undulating bike ride through Matapihi and across the

railway bridge to work. I love using this cycleway. Exercise, great views,

fresh air and free easy parking ... perfect!”

Cr. Leanne Brown

Page 8: Trustpower welcome to tauranga city centre

“My best tip for a lunchtime getaway on a hot sunny day is to grab a cool smoothie from Pluto on Devonport

Road and go dip your toes in the water underneath the railway bridge at the end of Elizabeth Street. It’s a

refreshingly peaceful spot, regardless of the odd passing train.”

Cr. Matt Cowley

“It’s great starting my day with coffee from Me & You on First Avenue,

always friendly service, which is what you need when it’s hard to get going first thing. Great fresh and inspiring food for lunch as well, I love them!”

Mark O’Donnell Sharp Tudhope Lawyers

“We love Dry Dock Café on Wharf Street! It’s one of our favourites for

their great coffee, tasty food and friendly service from Sandra and

her team.” Aimee Driscoll

Tauranga City Council

“My go-to exercise during the week is at the midday boot-camp classes by No Compromise Fitness at 45 Cliff Road on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Steve caters for all fitness

levels. The sessions are friendly and not too scary for newbies.”

Marcel Currin Tauranga City Council

“There is nothing better after a busy week than to enjoy Friday lunch on

The Strand. My hot favourite is to sit outside at Macau on The Strand and enjoy their beautiful food and

service while enjoying the stunning waterfront.”

Belinda Francis Mediaworks Radio

“After a day at work a great place to go and unwind is The Phoenix on The Strand. Mark and his team do an extremely good job and a little

bonus is Thursday nights from 5pm, where they have $6 pints of Monteiths

tap beer. A great setting and great staff make this one of my favourite

places, and if you want more than one pint, but are concerned about drink/driving, don’t forget the Hopper bus service runs regularly and is just 30 seconds walk from The Phoenix.”

Andrew Love NZME

Page 9: Trustpower welcome to tauranga city centre

“If you need to get some dry cleaning done you can simply pop into Bond

& Co on Devonport Road and Jason and the team will sort it for you. It’s a great service. Love their

men’s clothing range too – absolutely stunning.”

Sally Cooke Tuskany Mainstreet

“I really enjoy grabbing lunch from Sammies on Devonport Road, with

a wide range of fresh sandwiches available on the spot, they also do toasties to order and have a great range of fresh pastries perfect for something on the go. Their Mac n Cheese is a nice treat to have on a

cold winter’s day.” Adam Watson

Tuskany Agency

“I love cycling in this city! I ride to and from work from Bethlehem and enjoy cruising along the waterfront and over the rail bridge. People are respectful of cyclists in this city, the weather is often stunning and the views of the harbour and Mount

Maunganui make it extra enjoyable...plus it’s a great way to stay fit!”

Millie Newitt Creative Tauranga

“A great walk at lunch time to clear the head is go along Cliff Road to Mission Street then to the Elms

Mission House site. The fantastic grounds and heritage buildings give

you a sense of yesteryear and how far Tauranga has developed in a relatively

short period of time. Understanding where Tauranga has come from helps

us form the future.” Stuart Crosby

Mayor

“Best summer experience – grabbing a coffee from Folk, at the

Basestation on Durham Street, and heading down to the waterfront to watch all the harbour action. In

winter you can’t beat the café on top of the Bongard Centre on Cameron

Road with 360 degree views and student-priced food (open to

the public).”

Meg Jones Bay of Plenty Polytechnic

“For total body fitness and strengthening your core Momentum

Pilates in First Ave is the place. Particularly good if you are recovering from an injury. Paul really cares about

his clients, and you will surprise yourself by how you can progress.”
