He fasted and prayed with abandon. When the convent needed to pay a debt, martin humbly offered himself: “I’m only a poor mulatto… Sell me.” Upon his death in 1639, the great personages of Lima came to pay their respects. Dr. Carol Razza, PhD will lead this day on No- vember 12, 8:30 am to 6pm. Please call 504-529-1636 to register. St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru on December 9, 1579. He was the illegitimate son to a Spanish gentlemen and a freed slave from Panama, of African or possibly Native American descent. At a young age, Martin's father abandoned him and his family leaving Martin to grow up in deep poverty. He experienced a great deal of ridicule for being of mixed-race. In Peru, by law, all descendants of African or Indians were not allowed to become full members of religious orders. Martin, who spent long hours in prayer, found his only way into the community he longed for was to ask the Dominicans of Holy Rosary Priory in Lima to accept him as a volunteer who performed the most meni- al tasks in the monastery. By 1603, he became a Dominican lay brother. Ten years later he was assigned to the infirma- ry where he would remain in charge until his death. He became known for encom- passing the virtues need to carefully and patiently care for the sick, even in the most difficult situations. Martin was praised for his unconditional care of all people, regardless of race or wealth. He took care of everyone from the Spanish nobles to the African slaves. Martin didn't care if the person was diseased or dirty, he would welcome them into his own bed. Martin's life reflected his great love for God and all of God's gifts. It is said he had many extraordinary abilities, includ- ing aerial flights, bilocation, instant cures, miraculous knowledge, spiritual knowledge and an excellent relationship with animals. Martin also founded an or- phanage for abandoned children and slaves and is known for raising dowry for young girls in short amounts of time. In January of 1639, when Martin was 60-years-old, he became very ill with chills, fevers and tremors causing him agonizing pain which he experienced until his death on Novem- ber 3, 1639.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish is to develop an atmosphere for the members

of our Faith Community to live out the four-fold goals of the Catholic Church:

Worship, Word, Service, & Community.

Prayer for Priests

Dear Lord,

We pray that the

Blessed Mother will

wrap her mantle of

protection around

Your priests and

through her interces-

sion may they be

strengthened in their

ministry.

We pray that Mary

will guide Your priests,

dear Lord, to follow

her own words, “Do

whatever He tells you”.

(John 2:5)

May Your priests have

the heart of St. Joseph,

Mary’s most chaste

spouse. May the

Blessed Mother’s own

pierced heart inspire

them to embrace all

who suffer at the foot

of the holy cross for the

love of God the Father.

May Your priests be

Holy, as you are holy,

And through the power

of the Holy Spirit,

may they be filled with

the fire of Your love

seeking nothing but

Your greater glory

and the salvation of

souls. Amen!

St. John Vianney,

pray for us!
