Being a Pirate means excelling inacademics, becoming a leader, volunteer, socialization, building lasting friendships, memories, and traditions. Your journey asa Pirate will bring you face-to-face withmaking life decisions that will inspireyou to engage in community, partake incontinuous personal and professionaldevelopment, and promoteglobal leadership.

Voyages, such as the one you are about toundertake, are met with seasons of calmsailing and seasons of turbulent seas. It is without a doubt that such mixtures become necessary to make possible one’s ability toremain strong and flexible during turbulent seas. As a Pirate you will gain the toolsneeded to fully enjoy those bright golden days of calm and free sailing. Equally as important, and more demanding, is your ability to successfully navigate thestormy weather that may arise duringyour journey (Alston, 1974).

It is our hope that that you participate fully in your academic journey. Though it seem odd, it is also our hope that you embrace the storms that require weathering. In so doing, you will find that you have inmental reserve the capacity to make sounddecisions in order to overcome possible mishaps.

Peace be the journey!

When students who are uninsured become seriously ill or injured, theiracademic careers are seriously threatened by substantial health care debt, disability, or both. As a result, all 16 state institutions in North Carolina, including East Carolina University, now require students meeting specificeligibility criteria to have health insurance.

ECU offers a cost effective option for students through Chartis Educational Markets; however, students who already have adequate health insurance coverage can waive out of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) by showing evidence of enrollment in a comparable health insurance plan.

SHIP works in partnership with the health fee included in tuition to provide seamless health care at a reasonable cost to students. The health fee included in tuition covers provider charges at SHS, while SHIP helps cover ancillary charges such as lab, x-ray, pharmaceuticals, etc. SHIP is utilized just as any other health insurance plan. This policy can be used for outside provider appointments as well asservices rendered at SHS.

Read the letter from our Student Health Director that was sent to new ECU students and transfers, regarding the 2012-2013 insurance process, how to waive/enroll, and plan changes for theupcoming year.

If you have questions? Visit the Student Health Insurance website at http://www.ecu.edu/cs-stu-dentaffairs/studenthealth/payment_info/student-health-insurance.cfm or give them a call (252) 328-6841.
