Making a Tsunami
Tsunami’s are made from a large disturbance in the ocean like an earthquake or landslide.
Origin of the Word
Tsunami comes from two Japanese words, tsu which means harbor and nami Which means wave
Dangers
A Tsunami can destroy many homes and buildings.
Aftermath
A tsunami can kill tens of thousand of people.
Warning Signs
The water along the shoreline recedes dramatically, exposing normally submerged areas.
As a Weapon
In World War II, New Zealand Military initiated Project Seal, which attempted to create small tsunamis with explosives. The attempt failed.
2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami
On Christmas day, 2004 an earthquake occurred in the Indian ocean that caused a tsunami that killed over 230,000 people in fourteen countries.
2011 Japanese Tsunami
On March 11, 2011 an earthquake occurred on the pacific cost of Japan. The earthquake was a 9.0 on the Richter scale. There are confirmed 9,080 deaths, 2,675 injured, and 13,561 people missing.
