A L I F E T I M E O F B E L O N G I N G JULY 2016 3
Very few times in this forum have I spoken about our amazing and totally needed new building project which is just a few months away from breaking ground. I like to save this “space,” my monthly article, for spiritual wisdom and lessons. And then I realized, ever since we started our New Building Project, it has been primarily a spiritual pursuit. Everything we are doing is in the spirit of the furtherance of our sacred and venerable tradition of Judaism—what could be more spiritual?
The answer—if everyone participates…that would be the ultimate spiritual gift! And that is the only other time I have written about the New Building in my articles is to introduce the theme of the campaign “All In.” Naïve and Pollyanna as it may sound, I am still hoping and praying that we have 100% participation from our whole congregation—that would make the project a family project in the truest sense. I am ecstatic to report that we have 75% participation from our members thus far. But I am not a “C” student—I want an A+ and hence, the power of 100% will make this project not only financially doable, but be a spiritual achievement of immense proportions. We have people who are so generous—some giving more than a million dollars and we have others, who struggle each month to make an $18 payment towards the project because their heart so moves them to do so. Both gifts, and everything in
FROM OUR SENIOR RABBI
between, is meaningful to us. Even our staff, clerical and clergy—100% have given to the project because it is important for them to be part of this endeavor in their hearts. I had a single mom call me to ask if we could charge her credit card $5 a month so that she could be part of this. I had a second grader bring me her piggy bank and asked that we put it towards the new sanctuary. So many powerful stories of people who just want to be connected to this transformative project in our Temple’s history.
So if you haven’t given, I would like to invite you to my home so that we might share the updates and the progress of our new Temple building. Please join me on either July 11, August 4 or August 10 at 7:00 pm. Please RSVP to my assistant Lindsey at [email protected] and she will send you information to join me at my home. You will also receive personal invitations. And what would a gathering at the rabbi’s home be without some delicious food and wine. Yes, this is about fundraising, but from the bottom of my heart, this is more about a spiritual quest for our Temple family to come together as one.
For those who have already given, I would also like to personally invite you to my home to share the progress of our project with you, who have made this all possible. It will give me a chance to say thank you (and yes, there will be great food and wine as well!). You will each receive a personal invitation soon as well.
ALL IN
The Torah tells us regarding the construction of the Tabernacle that only those whose hearts so move them should give to the building of this sacred space. There will be no assessments for this project—it is based on only those whose hearts so move them. For those whose hearts have been moved thus far, I thank you with the fullness of gratitude because I know what we are creating here is a center for Orange County Judaism to last the generations. For those whose hearts have not yet been moved, my goal and hope is that you will join me in my home so that whatever your tzedakah level, you will participate in our family project and see it as a spiritual act of incredible significance.

A L I F E T I M E O F B E L O N G I N G JULY 2016 7
FROM OUR CANTOR
On the night of June 4th we got together for my annual concert here at SHM. After months of preparations and rehearsals, the time had finally arrived. My son, Gidon, our special guest, Duvid Swirsky, and I had been rehearsing without the band for the prior two months. So at 2:00 pm we got together for the final and only full rehearsal before the show.
The musicians in the band are great and after working on a couple of the more difficult songs, we are “on the same page” and we finish shortly after 5PM. We sat together for a quick dinner, relaxed with jokes and small talk and now we are just waiting for the crowd to come.
After the Havdalah service with Rabbi Steinberg and Rabbi Lewis, it’s time to start with the first song. The energy in the room is great, you can feel it. Gidon is singing lead in the first song. We chose Paul Simon’s “Mother and Child Reunion” and changed the words to “Father and Child”. The first song is critical because it sets the tone and the mood for the evening.
I see a lot of faces in the audience eager to hear us sing and play. The band plays the intro
to the song and Gidon with his sweet sunny tenor starts: “ No I would not give you false hope”… and it is on! I see people singing with us, pure joy. “But the father and child reunion is only a motion away”…everybody is singing as Duvid and I give Gidon our harmony. It feels good from beginning to end and the reaction from the four hundred people out there is great.
Now we are in a groove and the rest of the concert is flowing with a blend of songs that are “rockers” and mellow with an acoustic one in the middle just to break it up a little. About two thirds into it I see a couple dancing in the back and little kids that are enjoying the sound too. For an artist, there is nothing compared to live music where you get the feedback instantly. You feel the joy in the audience, you have eye contact with them, they let you know. Our guitar player Bill Kilpatrick gets applause and standing ovation after one of his energetic solos, just great!
At the end we encore with “Hey Jude” and finish with “Na nanana” as all join in. People were schmoozing during the dessert time afterwards and stayed after 10 PM. What a night, we are so happy, smiles everywhere.
REFLECTIONS FROM MY ANNUAL CONCERT
On the following Monday morning I listened to the recording for the first time. I am very critical of myself but as I listen I can’t find anything I don’t like. Half-way through it I got this amazing happy feeling. It felt like it was engulfing me with this aura, really hard to describe.
It takes a village to get an event like this to happen. I want to thank our Executive Director Beth Shikler who is the quiet force behind the scenes and for giving me the idea for this concert and our rabbis who always are enthusiastic and so supportive! Thank you to Wendy Gary for gathering volunteers to handle check-in and ushering and Linda Greene for organizing the bakers. All the bakers, everything was yummy! We all appreciate Bruce Gary for manning the parking lot, not an easy job. Paul Carman for preparing all the charts and recordings for the band in advance, and managing the personalities during rehearsal. Gidon and Duvid for your dedication, talent and companionship!
Most of all, thank you to all who attended; the patrons, and friends who attended and those who bought patron tickets and couldn’t come. Without your support it would be impossible to make this night happen. Wishing you a good summer!

A L I F E T I M E O F B E L O N G I N G JULY 2016 9
This summer is when we get all our ducks in a row prior to ground breaking on the new facility right before Yom Kippur. We have made a tremendous amount of progress and the excitement is building in everyone actively engaged in the Building Program. Here’s where we are:
• The architects completed 100% of Detailed Design (DD) – an important phase of the project where all the major structural elements are detailed out at a fairly minute level to allow for the contractor and sub-contractors to have enough information to bid and begin the even more detailed planning process. This is a very major milestone in the project and we were thrilled to meet this at the end of May 2016. The next step is Construction Documents – the even more detailed drawings and specifications that the Contractor can use to get bids from and leads to the Building Permit process.
• Additional estimates have been provided by both the architect’s estimating company and the general contractor’s estimating department. They are very close, so with the information we have today – that doesn’t include the amounts to be bid by the Subs or specific amounts for raw materials, we are close to an understanding of the project and can now work on the Value Engineering process that considers ways to further refine or amend the designs to drive economies. This is an important process we are now engaged in and will finalize shortly.
• The Finance Committee held its first meeting to review cash flow projections and potential project costing to determine when we will need to bridge the gap between our collected pledges and committed pledges to be able to continue to pay for the construction costs. With many of our congregants pledging over a five year period, the funds for our project will be collected after we move into our new facility. It has always been our plan to secure bridge financing and now’s the time to begin our investigation and discussions with financial institutions about the options available to us. Our goal is to be able to pay our bills and incur the least amount of financing charges that we can, so the committee has their work cut out for them exploring all our options.
• The Board met for over 3 hours in June to discuss the status of the program. The enthusiastic
FROM OUR CO-PRESIDENTS

support that our Board has demonstrated is so encouraging to the members of the Core Building Team. The Core team shared with the Board the tremendous amount of documentation combed through with the architect, contractors, and others in pursuit of completion of the 100% DD process. Familiarity with the drawings, detailed specifications, commentary, feedback from the project management firm, as well as input from our resident experts all have been essential in making decisions quickly, keeping the Board informed of progress and keeping everyone on track to meet deadlines and continue to move forward.
Please visit the pictures in the lobby of the design for the building. The elements we require to drive improved programming, connect with our community, and build a truly transformative facility are all included, such as: • Larger sanctuary with better accommodations
for our clergy, choir, visitors to the Bima (with much more room to spread out), and state of the art audio visual capabilities
• Spacious Social Hall that can fit a large gathering for a special event and also seamlessly act as overflow for our large services – such as High Holy Days
• Many new class rooms – with accommodation to enable us to rent some of our facilities during the week to a day school or other parties needing space when we’re not occupying our class rooms
• A beautiful chapel to allow us to have multiple services simultaneously or take advantage of a more intimate worship space when warranted
• A café to further enhance our community areas• Better access and show casing of our stained
glass windows as a centerpiece in our courtyard• A wonderful amphitheater stair case in the
atrium that allows us to reach the second floor, but also to hang out or use them for a stage – when the mood suits us
• A quiet room off the sanctuary with a restroom to make the space more useful for both youngsters and their families as well as doubling as a bridal room during weddings
Beth Carroll & Rachel Harman-Friedman
Temple Co-Presidents
• A caterers kitchen by the Social Hall to make serving and heating food easy for special events
• A gift shop that is a grand space right off the main entry, but also a comfortable meeting place for the community to gather
• A studio for the cantor to record or practice with musicians
…and this is only a partial list – the stylish, warm, and welcoming way our requirements are being met are going to leave you as excited as we all are, and eager to get this party started!!
If you have questions about the progress, the plans, or anything – please feel free to call any of the Core Building Team members:
Chair – Sharon BlindellBeth Carroll, Rachel Harman-Friedman, Ed Horovitz, Debra Goldman, Rabbi Steinberg, Beth Shikler
More details will be forthcoming about our plans for worship, school, and community while we are in the construction phase. As you may have read last month, worship services will be held at the Mormon Center on Lake Street in Irvine. We plan to hold religious school at Tarbut v Torah on Sundays. The High School and other Tuesday afternoon/evening activities will be held in the Conference Center above the Irvine Lanes at Harvard and Michelson. We have plans for committees, community events, and more. If you have any questions or want to volunteer your home for a community activity, please contact the Temple office.

Samaritans, Karaites, Sabotniki Sabbateans, Jews for Jesus, Black Hebrew Israelites—these are but a few of the groups claiming the title of “true Israel”, putting aside the whole of Christianity! Almost-Jews, pseudo-Jews are a fascinating parallel universe. Jew-ey, but not Jewish (for the most part), these groups existed in oft-times contentious relationship with the main body of the Jewish people. What can we learn about our own de-nominations from the historical Jewish experience with those at the fringes of the community?

SCHOOL NEWS
At times, a synagogue is referred to as a beit knesset, literally a ‘house of gathering.’ Other times, it is called a beit tefillah, a ‘house of prayer.’ And sometimes, it is referred to as a beit midrash, a ‘house of study.’ The most powerful thing about affiliating with a synagogue, I believe, is that it serves all of these functions in a world that needs them all.
For our purposes this summer, while we are busy packing boxes and getting ready for a year filled with building and renovation, the key element of the synagogue, in all of its functions, is that at the core of all its names is the beit. The synagogue—our synagogue—is a bayit, a ‘house’ or, more appropriately, it is a home. This remains the case whether we gather on Michelson Drive, or whether we gather in the multiple temporary locations where we will be during the upcoming construction period.
Beginning in September and throughout the months of construction on our property, Religious School will meet in two locations.
On Sunday mornings, we will occupy the lower school campus of Tarbut v’Torah Community Day School (5200 Bonita Canyon Drive, Irvine). The Tuesday afternoon Hebrew program, as well as our entire High School program, will meet at the Back Bay Conference Center (3415 Michelson Drive, Irvine), just upstairs from Irvine Lanes. We are busy making plans to help us settle in while we are guests in these other locations, yet we know that wherever we are—as a community—we are ‘home.’ After all, the well-known idiom says it succinctly: Home is where the heart is.
Our hearts look forward to welcoming yours to our Religious School on Bonita Canyon Drive, on Michelson Drive, and in all of the temporary homes where our synagogue will meet during this exciting period of transformation for our permanent home.

Rabbi Steinberg Says…
Join the new SHM online community–it’s THE place to be for sharing with fellow members and staying informedCommunity is the essence of our existence. To that end, we introduce to you yet another way for us to connect with one another. We spend more time in front of our computers and on our phones and tablets, than most other activities and hence, while doing so, we want you to be connected to Temple.
On July 1st, we will be introducing some changes to our website with the goal of providing more personalized and meaningful interactions for you, our congregants. This will be done in conjunction with Memeni, Hebrew for “from me”. Memeni is a company that helps organizations create private customized online communities.
Memeni will provide us with a behind the scenes platform. Through collaboration with our congregants, we hope to improve our communication channel by including content that facilitates a more direct and deeper connection with each other; a more meaningful online temple community.
As we seek to target relevant information for each of you, you may be asked to answer a few short questions regarding your interests. It will be a quick and easy process.
Additionally we are very excited about two other features. You will be able to communicate with other temple members directly from the website. Memeni allows you to send instant messages to each other and provides the ability to create chat groups. Best of all, a bit further down the road will be the release of our own mobile app.

SHM Students Thank The Chasin Family for Once in a Lifetime Opportunity
A New Perspective by Renee Firth
When I first decided I wanted to go to Israel for a semester, I really had no conscious idea why. For some reason, I just had this instinct that told me I absolutely had to go, but would not tell my why I should. Yes, I was excited to be in a country full of fellow Jews, eat falafel for four months straight, and live away from the OC bubble for a little while. But these were all shallow desires, not really capturing my motivation in a tangible manner that I could explain to family and friends. Despite this, I felt very confident boarding that airplane, even
though I still couldn’t wrap my head around why I was doing it.
And that’s probably why I panicked a little bit when I laid down in my bed in Israel on the first night.
Over the course of the next few weeks, I would still be unable to explain exactly why I was there. Don’t get me wrong, I was living for every second of it. It was an incredible experience beyond what words can describe- like trying to explain why you get a little emotional looking at the waves of the ocean reflect splinters of light and crash into each other with amazing force. And I never had that ‘aha’ moment of “Wow, I’m in Israel” either, but rather lots of little moments of ‘awe’.
I had a little taste of ‘awe’ when I bit into a falafel on the first day; a gasp of ‘awe’ when the colors of the desert melted into each other in a Masada sunrise; an exasperated sigh of ‘awe’ at 4 AM because I can’t figure out who Shimon Bar Yochai was for my Jewish history exam that morning (for the record, he hid in a cave and may or may not
have written the Zohar, which wasn’t on my test but I still remember); a shout of ‘awe’ dancing with women on Shabbat in an artist’s studio in Tzfat; I said ‘awe’ as I slid into a cool spring after 3 days of hiking through a heat wave and dust storm. After fasting for Yom Kippur, my fingertips screamed ‘awe’ as the brushed the Western Wall, and my eyes sparkled ‘awe’ as they looked over Jerusalem on the last night.
All these little moments of ‘awe’, I think, are more powerful and significant than any moment of ‘aha’. It’s as if that little irrational voice in my head that told to take the leap, go to Israel for a semester, was guiding me to find these details because it knew what an impact it would make on myself. Honestly, it feels like that little voice was Israel, calling out for me to find her. My experience in Israel is not characterized by the purely fun or exciting aspects of a trip, but rather the small struggles and triumphs a journey that truly changed my perspective.
Excerpt from Speech by Jacob Friedman
I was privileged to spend a semester in Israel. My trip, simply put, was amazing. I’ll start by giving you the gist of what daily life on EIE was like. Home base was on Kibbutz Tzuba, and as the brochure will tell you, we were nestled in the Judean hills, about 15 minutes away from Jerusalem. Every normal school day started with a Hebrew class. This class was an experience unto itself. We were taught basic grammar and vocabulary every morning, but most of our learning came about during the day. There is something to be said for being able to walk out of your room in the morning and being able to speak the language you
are trying to learn with people who are fluent in that language. After Hebrew, we had our Jewish History class. This is what made up the bulk of our program, as every field trip we took was centered around this class. Every single thing we learned about, we were given the opportunity to go and see. We saw the inside of biblical burial caves, the trio of seas (the Red, the Dead, and the Med), climbed mountains, saw the Knesset, the home of the Israeli Parliament, and spent a week in Poland to study the Holocaust and its effect on the state of Israel and modern Jewry. And while that seems like a lot, on our schedule, excluding Poland, all of that would be a part of a single week. I think that educational emphasis was placed on our Hebrew and Jewish History classes, but half of our day was dedicated to general studies courses and I was able to take all of the same classes that I’m currently taking.
On most Friday nights and Saturday mornings, my group had Shabbat services that were written and led by me, which was such an honor. This was my way of connecting intimately with everything that we did over the course of four months. Some students kept blogs that they updated regularly. I had promised to do the same, but I made four
posts and then let it go. However, if you need written documentation of how I was feeling any given week, you could go through various service outlines and Divrei Torah that I wrote for every weekend, because I tried my hardest to have our services emulate what we had learned that week.
I came away from my trip to Israel with more questions than answers, but I know how I feel in my heart about the simple act of being Jewish. Be proud of being Jewish and how you express your Judaism, but never accept that you will never change. The wonder of our faith is that there is always more to learn and it would be an incredible shame to let thousands of years of knowledge and tradition fade away simply because we are no longer interested. This short talk by no means encompasses all of my thoughts on this matter because frankly, even the rabbis would get bored if I talked for that long. Neither does this speech cover everything that I’m just dying to share about my experience. But I think that’s good. I think that means that my final words can be an invitation to come with me to theorize and philosophize about our faith. So come with me and let’s go and learn. Shabbat Shalom.
