Every Friday night we read the “Kaddish list,” which includes those whose yartzeits (anniversary of their deaths) falls during that week and then we read aloud those who have died in the past thirty days. It is Jewish tradition to recite the names of loved ones at those periods in a community setting, so that no one should have to mourn alone. At our synagogue we also recall innocent victims of terror, military personnel and all those who died in the Holocaust, who don’t have anyone to say Kaddish for them—we take it upon ourselves to do so.
Our Jewish tradition is psychologically sound when it comes to death, dying and mourning practices. As a congregation over 47 years old now, our Kaddish list is getting longer and longer—there is much history to cherish and recall. But as the joke goes; if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, did it make a sound? So too, if no one shows up to remember the life of a loved at services, is the person still remembered? The answer is, “Of course, the person is remembered.” But I would like to talk about the remember-er...that is, not the deceased, but the living. Coming to services to recite Kaddish for a loved one can be transformative. We remember those who came before us and how they affected our lives in a myriad of ways. Attending Shabbat services, in the midst of love, community and joy is a precious way to hold sacred the memory of a loved one.
In fact, I would like to invite you to email me and/or Rabbi Lewis a vignette or memory of a loved one you are remembering on any given Shabbat. Email us during the week prior and when we read the name aloud, we will be able to put a holy connection to the words we are speaking as we look you in the eye and recite the name. Kaddish is about making a person’s memory live in our souls. Actualizing such a memory by writing the email will make sacred
that shared moment of intersection between you and your loved one.
The trajectory of our services often flow from high to low and back to high again—deliberately so. In Judaism, we believe that even in our most joyous moments, we remember those who came before us. During the High Holy Days, Sukkot, Passover, and Shavuot, we commemorate Yizkor by reading aloud the names of our deceased family and friends. At a Jewish wedding we stomp on the glass to remind us of the destruction of our People. Pausing to remember those upon whose shoulder we stand, elevates our experiences. Kaddish, while sad to recall the loves of our lives, in essence, lifts our spirits to greater awareness of their presence in our lives, even if not physically.
One of the traditions of the Kaddish derives from the prayer known as the Kaddish d’Rabbinan…the Kaddish of the Rabbis. It was a ritual to recite a form of Kaddish after one had studied the work of a deceased scholar. The words of study gave life to the moment and the recitation of the Kaddish gave it meaning. So too it is with all our love ones, scholars or not; they taught us in ways measurable and unseen as well, which helped us become who we were intended to be. Coming to services to pay respect for their influence in our lives is one of the greatest mitzvahs of all the mitzvahs.
Henrietta Szold who founded Hadassah in the early 20th century insisted on saying Kaddish for her mother despite the fact, that it was not traditional for women to say the prayer. On September 16, 1916 Szold wrote to Haym Peretz who had offered to say the prayer for her. “It is impossible for me to find words in which to tell you how deeply I was touched by your offer to act as “Kaddish” for my dear mother. I cannot even thank you—it is something that goes beyond words. ….
And yet I cannot ask you to say Kaddish after my mother. The Kaddish means to me that the survivor publicly and markedly manifests his wish and intention to assume the relation to the Jewish community, which his parent had, so that the chain of tradition remains unbroken from generation to generation, each adding its own link. You can do that for the generations of your family, I must do that for the generations of mine (as told by Rabbi Greg S. Marx).”

OUR CANTOR’S PERSPECTIVE
Ever since I remember myself…..
I have been hearing music, all kinds of music; from my mother’s lullabies to songs on the radio, movies, live performances or on the street. I am sure all of you have a similar experience.
I have never met anyone who doesn’t like music. Some prefer certain genres and won’t listen to music they don’t like. However, we all are attracted to music in a very deep way. It is part of our being and part of the universe.
American Indians believed that the world was created in song. It is a Jewish belief that the body needs food and the soul needs music. It goes back to the beginning of mankind, a spontaneous melody that comes to our minds when we are happy or sad. It can lift us from the dust so we can see things with perspective, make us think or just make us feel good. Blues is the product of human suffering. Singing about it helps dealing with the pain. I know someone who likes to drive alone to Las Vegas to have dinner and come back to OC the same day while listening to classic music in the car and singing loudly. Another likes to put the earphones on and tune everything but the music out and listen. I watch a soccer match in Europe where the whole stadium sings to cheer their team in a powerful way.
Music can deliver a message in the melody or the words. It moves the spirit and the mind. Whatever music you have heard, are hearing now or in the future, makes up your musical landscape. In some mysterious way, our deepest and most lasting memories are songs or music we’ve heard. I had many experiences with people who had a stroke or dementia that couldn’t remember who
anyone is, even family, but could sing songs they knew or say the artist’s name. Maybe the design of our brain has something to do with it. Maybe the first and last sound we hear in our life is music. Research of people who had a near death experience tells of the “beautiful music” they heard at the time of their death. Some describe it as “angelic”, without words, perfect notes and harmonies. When they recall it they are moved to tears. I heard it directly from my father who had died clinically and was given a shot to the heart by the paramedics and came back to life.
Jazz has been called America’s classical music, and for good reason. Along with the blues, which came before, it is one of the first truly native music to develop in America, yet its unpredictable trips into improvisation gave it a unique quality that blues didn’t have. Throughout the years, and in all the different styles, those are the qualities that defined jazz. Other than Israeli songs and some European songs from the Israeli radio, jazz was the first genre I got into as a youth. It has a prominent place in my musical landscape. I listened to records by Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Thelonious Monk, Benny Goodman, Gerry Mulligan, Cannonball Adderly, Sonny Rollins, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, Shelly Man, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Frank Sinatra and so many more.
At the same time that I was listening to jazz I heard gospel music by artists such as Josh White and Odetta, Eartha Kitt, Harry Belafonte, Peter Paul and Mary, The Weavers, The Kingston trio, Nat King Cole, Bob Dylan among many. Whatever records we could find in someone’s house during a party or on the radio. My landscape also included music that my parents listened to like cantorial pieces on the radio on Friday afternoons and some dance and classic music.
My first record was Ray Charles and since it was my only record I played it over and over by hooking an old record player to my parents old Pilot radio which I used as an amplifier. I played it loud when they were not home, trying to sing with Ray and swing to the beat.
And then came Rock and Roll. It changed the whole music scene in a flash because of its instant
popularity. Rock and Roll had all the elements of the music I had been listening to before like blues, spirituals, folk, and jazz. From Buddy Holly to Elvis and the Beatles and the British Invasion, Rock took over. I was playing guitar already and was busy with folk, blues jazz and rock.
In the late 50’s and during the 60’s Israeli music got a surge of Mizrachi music. It was a genre listened to by immigrants from the Arab countries and others like Turkey, Greece and France. Aris San, a young immigrant from Greece scored some major hits and is credited with putting this music on the map. The Middle Eastern rhythm and melodies took a prominent part on the radio waves.
“The 60’s brought us Motown Music and those songs were so amazingly good that everyone was taken by them. It broke the race barriers as white kids were listening to African American music by an African American producers and record company. It came to be known as the Motown
Sound, a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence. During the 1960s, Motown achieved spectacular success for a small record company, 79 records in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 record chart between 1960 and 1969”. (Wikipedia)
So get your calendars out and put Saturday night, June 6th at 7PM: “Motown comes to SHM”. That is the theme of my annual concert this year. I will be joined by our FNL Band and two talented backup singers to take you on a magic musical trip on the wings of Motown music hits. I have been working on my dance moves, planning to give you an unforgettable evening of song and entertainment!

OUR PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
We should feel fortunate. We don’t have a ton of controversy or conflict at Shir Ha-Ma’alot. A juicy controversy might drive more attendance to our annual meeting, either that or a mystery. However, we strive to be collaborative at SHM and to be transparent, which over the years has not driven huge numbers of congregants to the annual meeting. Perhaps it is also because the meeting has been held on a Tuesday evening, which isn’t super convenient for a lot of people.
We always have a core group of people who ask insightful questions, but it’s usually a small, intimate crowd and I believe the rest of our Temple family is missing out. This year, the goal is to at least double the attendance at the annual meeting. Here’s why you should help us meet this goal:
1. Participate in confirming Temple leadership: The annual meeting is where we confirm the slate for our Temple leadership. Our Board members are asked to join the leadership for a number of reasons—all our lay leaders have a continued commitment to the Temple and have demonstrated leadership either within Temple programs or in the broader community. Many have special talents that are needed on the Board (legal, financial, etc.). You hear about the newly proposed Board members and get an understanding of what their backgrounds are and how they will help further our mission. Your vote confirms the nominated slate and your support of the lay leadership.
2. Learn about what’s been going on: The President gives a brief update on the state of the Temple and opens the floor for questions you may have on a broad range of topics. This is your chance to understand the business of the Temple.

3. Vote on Annual Budget: The Treasurer presents the annual budget and answers questions from the congregation on the factors that went into the budget model and the prior year results. Your vote is important in confirming your support for the financial plan for the upcoming year.

We’ll let you know what we’ve accomplished so far, the direction we’re headed, and time table for the activities to come. The excitement is building as the first schematics have been received from the architect, many of the required activities for the Conditional Use Permit are completed, and we continue to build our Capital fund. We’ll answer your questions and respond to concerns you may have about this important program for our Temple.
5. Take advantage of the time to schmooz and nosh: With the change in timing to Sunday morning between religious school sessions, we’ll be providing bagels and coffee before and after the meeting. (What would a Jewish event be without noshes and catching up with friends?)
If you feel out of the loop, have questions, want to show your support while also having a chance to visit with people you haven’t seen in a long time, there is no better opportunity than attending the annual meeting!

These are just some of the responses we received when we asked the parents of students in our Religious School a simple question: What it is that you hope for your children when you send them to Religious School?
Your responses were not at all surprising since, in many ways, our Religious School is the heart of our congregation and those are many of the things that lie at the core of this synagogue’s mission. Our Religious School is filled with Torah, with prayer, with music, with dancing, with community and with the energy of engaged students and devoted teachers. The spirit that flows from this center enlivens our entire congregation.
When, a number of years ago, we moved from a single session of Religious School to a double session (early and late) so that we could accommodate the growing numbers of students in our limited space, we worked hard to ensure that students in both sessions were able to benefit from this incredible sense of vibrancy. With the addition of the Hebrew Chavurah program in more recent

years, enrollment trends have led to nearly 50% more families choosing the early session over the late one. As a result, we are keenly aware that the overall experiences of students in the early and late sessions are very different from one another simply because the community feeling is so different in each session. We want to ensure that every one of our students has the best experience possible and that our Religious School community as a whole continues to enliven the spirit of its participants and of our congregation.
In identifying this discrepancy, the Board of Education began discussions about whether, starting in the coming year, it would be possible to have all of our students reunited for a single session of Religious School on a consistent basis. Even now, the reality is that with a creative use of space in Hebrew
Chavurah, most of our Religious School population is actually in the building at the same time.
Over many months, we met with parents, spoke with teachers and consulted with lay leadership and staff. In the end, the decision was that yes, we can make it happen, despite our limited space, and that in order to make it work, we would need to rethink the structure of our Religious School. In addition to their time in the classrooms, students will experience Judaism and classic Jewish texts through Israeli dance, drama, cooking, art, nature activities, Hebrew and more!
I am thrilled to announce that, beginning next fall, our Religious School will move to a single session, and in doing so, we will be able to better meet the goals so many of you have articulated for your children’s Jewish

education. These are goals shared by our clergy and staff: To bring Judaism to life, to nurture a love for being Jewish, to make connections to our past, to our future and to one another through excellent learning and to build a Jewish community among the nearly 450 Jewish young people who enroll in our Religious School.
Attached here is a diagram that attempts to explain what the structure of a Religious School day will look like, starting in the fall. There will be more information coming in your registration materials, as well as through parent conversations. My door is always open, as well. For now, know that we are looking forward to a program that will not only allow all of our students to be in the building at the same time, but also to build upon the strong Jewish educational foundation that has been built in our synagogue, up to this point.
This Sunday morning program will be a center of Jewish living and learning, and I look forward to having not only your children, but all of our SHM families, as part of it.

FAMILY PROMISE AT SHM…
Over 30 volunteers from our congregation teamed up and lived the value of g’milut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness) by fulfi lling the mitzvah of giving someone a home during the fi rst week of February. Three Orange County families, down on their luck and otherwise homeless, resided in our synagogue-home for one week.
Our members served dinners, hosted overnight, and trans-formed our classrooms into a temporary home fi lled with love, safety, and compassion. Todah Rabbah (thank you) to all involved in this project.
