June 2010 Notes from President MAJ (Ret) David R. Robinson On behalf of our membership, I would like to thank the members of our Chapter who participated in the planning and execution of the Dining Out cel- ebration on Saturday, 8 May. When I was forced to step back from the event preparations, several members stepped forward and filled the gap. I am highly indebted of their efforts which resulted in a superb event joining the Highland Society and MOAA. I heard from many who attended noting that they had a wonderful time - great food, lively conversations, a good blending of military formal tradition with the Scottish traditions of the Highland. The AMC Jazz Band received rave reviews of their play during cocktails and dinner while the young Scottish dancers accompanied by bagpipers after dinner were also well appre- ciated. I regret being unable to attend the event, but personal health issues precluded me from enjoying the evening. I hope your summer is enjoyable and look forward to seeing you at our next event. On behalf of our membership, I would like to thank the members of our Chapter who participated in the planning and execution of the Dining Out cel-

ebration on Saturday, 8 May. When I was forced to step back from the event preparations,

several members stepped forward and filled the gap. I am highly indebted of their efforts which resulted in a superb event joining the Highland Society and MOAA. I heard from

MOAA Dining Out/Highland Society Gala 8 May 2010

Lt Col (Ret) Jeff Brock

If you missed this year’s Dining Out/Gala on 8 May at the Richlin Ballroom, you missed a great time and superb food! Combining the military tradition of the Grog Bowl with the Scottish tra-ditions of the Haggis (a delectable palate pleaser) and piping in of the guests, made for a fun and ex-citing evening of entertainment and camaraderie.

Our MOAA special guests, SGT Hiram E. Hendri and SPC Sharia C. Leal, the Noncommis-sioned Officer and Soldier of the Year from Aberdeen Proving Ground, enjoyed the top notch enter-tainment of the Army Material Command Jazz Ensemble, the Scottish dance troupe from the Interna-tional Academy of Dance and bagpipers Tom Ritter and Geoff Douglass.

Although attendance by our membership was limited (only 24), we raised $270 through the Silent Auction of dinners, hotel stays, golf excursions, and other local offerings, courtesy of Harford County businesses: The Arena Club, Clarion Hotel, Durango’s Steakhouse, APG Golf Courses and the Williamsburg Inn. We were initially responsible for selling 50 tickets, but were fortunately able to renegotiate the contract with the Richlin; after all the bills were paid, as a Chapter we lost only $3.46! We owe a big Thank You to Angie Macomber, of the Highland Society, for all her hard work to pull this event together. Without her dedication, the Gala would not have happened. Your chapter members who served on the committee include Monroe Manning, Jim Wasson, David Robinson, and Jeff Brock.

Major Richard "Dick" J. Winn, US Army (Retired), died on April 26, 2010, at Perry Point

VA Medical Center. He was the son of the late Ralph E. and Alva R. (Powell) Winn. He is survived

by Ingrid, his wife of 42 years; their daughter, Catherina; son-in-law, Frank; and grandchildren, Luke, Lance and Leadora Lehmann, of Bel Air, MD. Also surviving, P.J. Winn, of Germany; and

aunt, Helen Hackenberry; and brothers, William and Larry Winn, all of greater Lewistown. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Jr.; brothers, Ralph and Gary Winn; sisters, Barbara Fultz,

Dorothy Elliot and Harriet Crosson. Richard, a 20-year Army veteran, first began his military service at Aberdeen Proving

Ground, then graduated from officer's candidate school in 1966, followed by several return assign-

ments to APG before retiring from military service (Major) at the Home of Ordnance. His military tours of duty also deployed him to Vietnam and several assignments to Germany. First, as an en-

listed soldier, then an ordnance officer, and later as government employee working for the U.S. Ar-my. He was very proud to have risen through the ranks from private to shop officer, and then to

company commander all within the 88th Mt. Company, 8th Mt. Bn. (Germany) during three differ-ent tours of duty.

His second career, working for the U.S. Government also started and ended at the Ordnance Center & School with his retirement in 1994. That year he started substitute teaching at Harford

Technical High School, until his illness three years ago.

Richard had a wonderful life. He was a caring husband, a great father, a loving "Pappy" (grandfather), a good brother, and a dear friend. Dick has been a pillar in our lives, his strength

and "can do-will do" attitude, inspired, taught and nurtured us over the years. His fulfillment in life was his family, his military career and the love of travel. He especially enjoyed his many tours to

Germany and felt at "home" in Deutschland. Dick will surely be missed by his family and friends around the world. Richard was a mem-

ber of MOAA, Susquehanna Chapter, Mount Ararat Lodge, No. 44, F.M&A.M., VFW Post 8581, and

VVA Chapter No. 0588, Bel Air. Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA

at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in "Memory of Richard J. Winn" to Volun-tary Services, VA Perry Point Medical Center, Bldg 15H, Room 214, Account No. 1063, Perry Point,

MD 21902.
