We regularly receive positive feedback relating to many aspects of Through the Letterbox.

A big Thank You to all our readers!

Following the publication of the BARKS page in our April issues, we received the following email from BARKS ......the committee were all thrilled with the advert and wish me to pass on our thanks for the work you put into it. We had a good response from the advertisement and I’m sure that we will want to place another advert with you in the not too distant future. We’re quite busy at the moment as kitten season has kicked in, myself included as I have a mum and four real cute kittens living in my dining room as we speak!!! I’ll talk to the committee at our next meeting and see if we can make a decision as to when we might like to place another advert with you. Once again many thanks...

Now and then, our advertisers are also quite pleased with us too!We are furniture retailers in Oxfordshire, where quality is everything.

Sarah has given us a fresh approach to our magazine advertising and produced some stunning design work that really showcases our furniture to it’s full potential.

We have used the designs in several renowned publications throughout the county and we are extremely grateful for the input given to us.

Plant of the month

Vegetables and Flowers - By now the vegetable garden will be well under way, make sure plants are supported if need be.

Remember to hoe between rows weekly to disturb the soil, which will keep the weeds at bay.

Aim to plant outside your tomatoes in early June; carefully remove side shoots as they grow. The tomato plants will need supporting. Roots should be kept moist but not waterlogged, pots and grow bags will require more regular watering and feeding,

Early potatoes may be ready to harvest. You can generally tell when ready as they will come into flower, be careful when digging, these will taste fabulous cooked with fresh mint from your herb garden.

Protect your vegetable and fruit crops from birds with netting, this can be purchased by the metre in varying widths, make sure you fasten to the ground or by making a simple frame. This time of year any gaps in herbaceous borders are best filled with annual bedding plants.

Staking Plants - Stakes should ideally be positioned in spring while the plants are small, but if you need to stake now, it will be more difficult so take care.

Tie up your clematis making sure there is some grit around the roots, this will help with the drainage and prevent the roots becoming too wet. Too much water can cause clematis wilt, which kills the whole plant. Dead head finished flowers and prune back spring flowering varieties, (check your books for specific instructions).

Feeding - Begin to feed your hanging baskets and containers with a suitable plant food, remembering to dead head regularly to encourage more blooms.

If you haven’t already given your roses a feed, do so now with a suitable rose feed.

Continue to tie in tomato plants, pinch out side shoots and feed with a liquid tomato feed, if they are kept in the green house, make sure you Cool Glass your greenhouse to ensure it doesn’t overheat.

Wild birds will still need feeding it’s better to feed them a seed mixture during the summer as this is much safer than peanuts, for the younger birds to eat. Ensure water is readily available.

June I hope will be sunny and warm, however we never know with our weather, no two days are the same.

But one thing is for sure, whatever the weather the grass and weeds will continue to grow, making mowing and weeding a continuous task.

Here are a few gardening tips which I hope you will find useful for June….

Pest and Diseases - Keep control of those slugs and snails, and protect your hostas and similar foliage plants with either traditional pellets or liquid slug clear, pots can be protected by a copper slug tape.

Check your roses for black spot and rust and continue to spray.

In the GardenJune I hope will be sunny & warm, however we never know with our weather, no two days are the same.

Seasonal bedding plants such as geraniums will be in colour and these thrive well in dry conditions.

Hosta – plantain lily these are grown for their attractive leaves however they do have lilac or white spike flowers.
