Croatian and Australian fable in the artistic creation of preschool children

This picture book is part of an experimental project “Croatian and Australian fable in the artistic creation of preschool children”, and is specifi c in the way it was created. It is a result of a project that involved forty preschool children from two distant countries and different continents ‒ Croatia and Australia. The project lasted from September 2008 to May 2009. The story, “Traps of the Square-looking Forest” was created by a group of 4 and 5 year-old children from the University of Melbourne’s Early Learning Centre in Abbotsford. The poetic research of the landscape in which the children searched for the underwater world, and which followed the visit to the exhibition “Waving Around the Traps”, served as the inspiration for the story. When the story fi rst arrived at “Pčelica” kindergarten in Zagreb the children explored the ecological and cultural features and discovered their similarities through exchanging letters, drawings and photos. Inspired by their peers’ imagination, they studied the distant continent on the globe and discussed the specific flora and fauna. Finally, they discovered the mysterious indigenous Aboriginal symbols from the Dreamtime. After hearing the story they formed their impressions into images, using distemper and pastels. Simultaneously with the Australian story, the children from Zagreb created a fable of their own, called “Story of the Lost Toys” which was inspired by some of the characters from Ivana Brlić Mažuranić: “Stribor’s Forest”. It was illustrated by the preschoolers from Melbourne, using water-colour and crayons. As a result of such an approach, the children’s imagination lead to an exploration of both Australia and Croatia, through the symbols of the stories. The project also served as a research of the way children experience the symbols and characters in stories which come from countries they had never heard of. Such an approach, accompanied by an exchange of letters and messages, affected the emotional connection of the two groups. Over time they formed their knowledge and visions into an expression of children’s imagination and creativity.

Symbol / termYawk Yawk - mermaids from the underwater spirit world created by artist Lena Yarinkura from Ngukurr in South East Arnhem Land. Her mermaids were a part of an installation based exhibition, “Weaving Around the Traps” visited by the children in April 2008 at the Chapman & Bailey Gallery, Abbotsford.

Hrvatska i australska bajka u likovnom stvaralaštvu djecepredškolske dobi

Ova je slikovnica dio eksperimentalnog projekta na temu “Hrvatska i australska bajka u likovnom i literarnom stvaralaštvu djece predškolske dobi”, a njezi-na posebnost u samom postanku, naime nastala je kao rezultat suradnje četrdesetero djece predškolskog uzrasta iz dviju udaljenih država, različitih kontinenata - Hrvatske i Australije. Rad na projektu trajao je od rujna 2008. do svibnja 2009. Priču “Zamke četvrtaste šume” sastavila je grupa djece u dobi od 4 i 5 godina iz Centra za rani dječji razvoj pri Sveučilištu Melbourne u Abbotsfordu. Dječje poetsko istraživanje neposrednog krajolika u kojem su tragali za podzemnim vodenim svijetom, a koje je uslijedilo nakon posjete izložbi instalacija “Istkane zamke”, bilo je inspira-cija ovoj priči. Kada su “Zamke četvrtaste šume” doputovale u Dječji vrtić “Pčelica” u zagrebačkoj Dubravi, djeca su, nadahnuta maštovitošću vršnjaka, proučavala globus, promatrala daleki kontinent i razgovarala o posebnostima australske fl ore i faune te se, naposlijetku, susrela s misterioznim simbolima Aboridžina iz vremena snova. Doživljaje, na stale nakon čitanja priče, u jednom su dahu pretočili u slike u tehnici tempere i uljnog pastela. Istovremeno s nastankom priče malih Australaca, Zagrebačka su djeca na sličan način napisala bajku pod naslovom “Priča o izgubljenim igračkama” koja je inspirirana likovima iz “Šume Striborove” Ivane Brlić Mažuranić, a predškolci iz Melbournea su je oslikali. Zahvaljujući ovakvom načinu rada, dječja je maštovitost vodila u upoznavanje djelića Australije i Hrvatske kroz simbole priča. Ovim je projektom provedeno istraživanje kojim se htjelo pokazati kako djeca iz različitih kultura i kontinenata doživljavaju simbole i likove iz priče druge zemlje koju nikada nisu vidjeli ni čuli. Ovakav interkulturalni pristup projektu, popraćen razmjenom pisama i poruka, utjecao je na emocionalnu povezanost dviju grupa koje su tijekom vremena pretočile svoja znanja i vizije u izražaj prepun dječje mašte i kreativnosti.
