CURRENT SCENARIO
Sustainable Airports
Nowadays the aviation industry faces a
growing public demand for action on
climate change, but it is perhaps unknown
that the industry has already made
great progress in mitigating its impact
and has set ambitious goals for the
future.

SPANISH LAW ON CLIMATE CHANGE
AND ENERGY TRANSITION
Regulatory framework
Article 11: Promotion of sustainable alternative fuels in air
transport.
Establish annual targets for the supply of SAF in air
transport.
Adopt the necessary measures to achieve compliance
with the objectives of supply of SAF in air transport,
including synthetic fuels in whose manufacture they
have been used exclusively raw materials and
renewable energy.
Must comply with the sustainability criteria defined by
European regulations
SPANISH INTEGRATED ENERGY AND
CLIMATE PLAN (PNIEC)
Defines the objectives for the reduction of greenhouse
gas emissions, penetration of renewable energies and
energy efficiency.
Measure 1.6: Advanced biofuels in transport:
Adaptation of the certification system for biofuels
Establishment of a specific obligation of sale or
consumption of advanced biofuels for the period 2021-
2030.
Promotion of the consumption of biofuels, through
measures that allow offering this possibility in service
stations
A future establishment of specific objectives for the
consumption of biofuels in aviation.

AENA'S COMMITMENT TO BIOFUEL
TECHNOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTATION PLATFORM WITH MICROALGAS
Project dedicated to research, experiment and improve CO2 capture technologies, coming from the airport
facilities, with which microalgae will be cultivated, destined to the production of biomass from which biofuel
can be obtained.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT FOR FUEL SUPPLIER IN AIRPORTS OF AENA
The agent will be responsible for complying with all the requirements that guarantee the volume of supply required by its customers
as the quality of the product and service, in accordance with current regulations.

H2020 PROJECT: SMART AIRPORTS
Sustainable Airports
Stream 2 – Smart Energy in airports
To deploy an “Smart energy management platform” at the
airport, in order to optimize the resources needed for the
operation of the infrastructure.
To use ground-handling vehicles powered by hydrogen-fuel
cells at Barcelona Airport, and to assess their performance and
impact on day-to-day operations.
Involve different stakeholders, for the production and distribution of
SAF at Barcelona Airport, and to assess the impact that these
processes may have on both the “lighthouse” and the “follower
airport”, as well as to identify the required changes and possible
adaptation needs in order to allow the supply of SAF at airports on
a regular basis.
