Charity Quilting News

March Update - Charity Quilters

We have been so lucky to have our busy ladies!

We were donated a van-full of fleece and so far, we have taken three grocery carts full of blankets, full, twin, crib and small mats to the Shelter. Heidi, at the Good Neighbor Center, is so grateful for all we do for them.

--Betty and Vergie

Charity Quilt Labels

If you need labels for a charity quilt Please see Vergie or Betty. They try to bring a supply to our General Meetings.

Good Neighbor Center

The Good Neighbor Center (GNC), located in Tigard is dedicated to providing safe emergency housing and supportive, empowering services for families. To learn more about them, please visit their web page: Good Neighbor Center.

GNC Donation Item

Every month our members bring to our General Meeting non-quilting related items to be donated to the GNC. The folks there always welcome donations of bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, laundry products or personal grooming supplies, canned goods or dry food products (such as spaghetti, pasta, rice, flour, or sugar), toilet paper, food storage bags, large black garbage bags, disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray or similar household cleaning products. If you have any of these items on hand, please bring it in, it will be welcomed.

Charity Quilter’s Sew Day

The TVQG Charity Quilters meet monthly on the first Monday of the month at the Sherwood Senior Center. Sewing start time is 10:00 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

Please bring your own sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. A wide selection of fabric is available for you to use in putting together a charity quilt. Finished quilts are donated to Tigard’s Good Neighbor Center, WINGS, or to other charity organizations as needed.

If you are working on a charity quilt and need to “raid the closet” for fabric, batting or supplies to complete or compliment your quilt, please drop by the Sherwood Center anytime during the Monthly Charity Sew Day.

WINGS

WINGS at Hood River is a program that offers young men and women in the Columbia Gorge region that have been “aged out” of the foster care system an opportunity to learn to be employable and self-sustainable. They offer a home, work, continuing education and ongoing support to young men and woman between the ages of 18 and 23.

If you would like to learn more about WINGS, please visit: Wings or for those of you that are on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getwings

Wings Update

Alison at Wings let us know the boy’s program is currently on hold. While Wings continues to work on getting the boy’s program back on track, Alison has asked we still continue to focus making on “masculine themed” quilts for them. On the other hand, the girl’s program at Wings is progressing nicely. The girl’s baked goods are being sold locally and being distributed through local caterers.

details will be provided as they become available.

February Presentation Attendees at our February General meeting welcomed our guest speaker, Ann Shaw who treated our members to a slide and trunk show of her various quilts. During her presentation, Ann explained her concept of using photographs as the inspiration and basis for her quilts, including the techniques and the process she personally uses to transform a photo into a quilt. At the conclusion of her presentations members were invited to review and purchase her quilting patterns.

I cannot count the day complete 'till needle, thread,

and fabric meet.

Tips and Tricks To sharpen your scissors, use them to make a few cuts on a piece of aluminum foil.

Use a magnet to pick up spilled needles or pins.

When adjusting your sewing machine’s tension, make sure the needles is in the up position.

In a pinch (no pun intended), or on thicker projects, you can use wooden clothes pins in place of plastic or small metal

binding clips.

I saw an article that said for free motion machine quilting gloves you can use a pair of rubber coated garden gloves

instead of quilting gloves. I picked up a package of 6 pairs colorful garden gloves for less than $15.00 at a home

improvement store and tried tip this out. They worked well. So I’m keeping two pairs in my sewing room and the

other will go in the garage to use for gardening. Wow…this was a great tip and a great bargain.
