A VISIT WITH AUNTIE MAMEIn the history of the American Musical Theatre, few "leading ladies" bring to mindas many different images as Auntie Mame - wild, exploratory, non-conforming,loving, caring - all of the ingredients in tonight's presentation of MAME.First the subject of a novel, then a play, a movie based on the play, then a musical, and yet another movie based on the musical, Auntie Mame has been winning thehearts of theatre-goers for over a generation. As the playwrights have said, "someof the spirit of Mame bubbles in each human being who really believes life is abanquet! There's surely a Mame in every community, often in every family".To get to know this intoxicating woman is to be entranced. Tonight, relax andbecome friends with MAME!

Page 8: TUCATDC - WVLO Mame.pdf · First the subject of a novel, then aplay, amovie basedonthe play, then a musical, and yet another movie based on the musical, Auntie Mame has been winning

BEN VARKENTINE (Young Patrick)At the young age of 12, Ben makes his debut with WVLO, but as you can

see by his stage presence, he is already a very experienced young man intheater. He has performed in "Hansel & Gretel", "Oliver", "Annie Get YourGun", "Music Man", and "Midsummer Nights Dream". A 7th grader atWilbur Middle School in Palo Alto, he has studied drama with Jodi CorwinBabbington and with Andrew Forrest at Peninsula School in Menlo Park. His ambitions are to appear in "Barnum" someday, win a Tony award, andto direct plays in addition to his performing. He collects comic books andtheater autographs. Watch Ben's future; we predict he's going far!

MARGE HAND (Vera)After a two-year absence from our stage, Marge is back to make her

eighteenth appearance and her second in the role of Vera. A long-standingand gOOd-natured rivalry with Katie (Mame) adds a great deal of meaning totheir portrayals on stage and especially in the number, "Bosom Buddies."Her most memorable roles include Golde in "Fiddler", Agnes in "I Do! IDo!", Elizabeth Barrett Browning in "Robert & Elizabeth", Nellie Cohan in"Good News" both which earned her ERMA awards as Best SupportingActress. Marge's most recent role was that of Dolly Levi in "Hello, Dolly"for SCP and in July, she and partner, Ray Toney, completed a successfulproduction of their original musical, "Delta Centauri", in Cupertino forCAST. She hopes this endeavor will someday add "Noted Lyricist" to hercredits. ~,ood luck, we hope you make it so we can say, "We knew themwhen ...

GAIL HAMILTON (Agnes Gooch)Gail made her dancing debut here in the Bay Area in WVLO's production of

"Oklahoma" and then went on to perform in SJCLO's "Brigadoon", TheaterWest's "Dracula", "Room Service", & "Ladies at the Alamo" and in"Philadelphia Story" for SJ Rep. Her many hobbies include movies, music, dancing, exercise, travel, cooking, and eating what she cooks. She mustonly cook with slim foods!!! Gail says she is living for the day when HalPrince calls her to inform her he simply can't do his next musical withouther! Keep cooking, Gail, wilder dreams have come true!

CHARLIE ROBERT (Dwight Babcock)A recent newcomer to our Valley from Connecticut, Charlie makes his first

appearance on this stage; but not his first performance in this area. He justcompleted the role of Joseph Gribble in Theater West's production of"Room Service". Majoring in drama at the University of Connecticut, Charlieperformed in "Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", and"Emperor Jones", among others. He says theater is his hobby and havingwife, Jennifer, in the show helps keep a happy home. Don't we know it!!!

Page 9: TUCATDC - WVLO Mame.pdf · First the subject of a novel, then aplay, amovie basedonthe play, then a musical, and yet another movie based on the musical, Auntie Mame has been winning

He made several appearances in productions at these colleges and atthe Fort Ord Playhouse in Monterey and finally "arrived" at the GaslighterTheater in Campbell. His credits include Vincentio in "Taming of theShrew", Lamar in "Godspell", Renfield in "Dracula" and many more. He listscooking and gardening among his hobbies and is currently working on aportfolio for commercials and modeling. He sure throws himself into thoselove scenes with 'Gloria Upson'. Wonder why!!!

ROY SHIMADA (Ito)Regular theater goers will remember Roy's portayal of Sammy Fong in lastseason's "Flower Drum Song" for which he was nominated Best Actor. Healso repeats his role of Ito, having performed it first in CP's production of"Mame" several years ago. This marks Roy's fourth production for WVLOand his talents and enthusiasm are always welcome. He also appeared withSDG in "Damn Yankees". A registered phsical therapist, Roy's ambition isto improve his acting and so he lists his hobbies as doing and going to thetheater.

credits include directing "Sound of Music", "Camelot" and "Good News" aswell as his memorable acting in "Very Good Eddie", "My Fair Lady", "SouthPacific" and others. SDG, SJCLO and TheaterWest have all enjoyed Hal'stalents in productions of "Where's Charley?", "Sly Fox", "Room Service","Golden Gates" and numerous others. He states he wants to be a"professional", but he didn't say at what!

RICK FRANK (Beauregard J.P. Burnside)

Rick is not a stranger to any stage in this Valley. A veteran performer ofmore than 40 shows, he directed "Brigadoon" and "Wonderful Town" forWVLO and has appeared in 6 other productions. His acting credits alsoinclude dramatic and musical roles for Montalvo, Gaslighter, TheaterWestand Community Players. He directed "Inherit The Wind" for CP last season.Rick says he's one of few performers who has played Dracula, AlfieDoolittle and Emile Debeck. That's what we call VERSA-TILE!!!
