SAINT MARY OF THE MOUNT PARISH PITTSBURGH, PA

Music “Notes” with Amanda:

“I Am the Bread of Life....”

As we discussed last week, the Scripture readings for the upcoming weeks in Ordinary Time focus around Jesus’s “Bread of

Life” discussions. For this reason, “I Am the Bread of Life” is a perfect song choice for these Gospel passages. Line by line,

here’s why. First, here’s part of the Gospel passage for this weekend:

Jesus answered and said to them,

"Stop murmuring among yourselves.

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him,

and I will raise him on the last day.” (John 6:44)

The first verse of “I Am the Bread of Life” is:

1. I Am the Bread of Life, you who come to me shall not hunger,

And who believe in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father beckons.

Refrain: And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day.

The next part of the Gospel continues in the same dialogue:

I am the living bread that came down from heaven;

whoever eats this bread will live forever;

and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." (John 6:51)

The following verses of “I Am the Bread of Life” continue to use John’s Gospel as the basis for its lyrics:

2. The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.

And if you eat of this bread, you shall live forever, you shall live forever.

Now, not all of our readings this weekend focus on the “Bread of Life” themes that we see in our Gospel. The second read-

ing calls us to be “imitators of Christ” through our actions in love. For this reason, I chose “Ubi Caritas” for our hymn at

the preparation of the gifts.

The scripture except that inspired me is:

...be kind to one another, compassionate,

forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.

So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love,

as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us

as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. (Ephesians 4:32-5:5:2)

“Ubi Caritas” speaks of finding the presence of God in our actions of charity and love:

Refrain: Ubi caritas est vera, est vera, Deus ibi est. Deus ibi est. (There there is true charity, God is there.)

Here’s the best part (I love it when this happens!)....the third verse of “Ubi Caritas” ties together both readings:

3. May we who gather at this table to share the Bread of Life become a sacrament of love, your healing

touch, O Christ.

This verse alludes to the “sacrificial offering” from the letter to the Ephesians and our “Bread of Life” dialogue in the

Gospel.

I hope this shows you some of the subtle ways our music highlights this weekend’s readings and seeks to imbed their mes-

sage deeper into our hearts.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 12, 2018

So Be Imitators of God,

As Beloved Children, and Live in Love

The call of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians to “be

imitators of God” gives us pause to ponder what we ex-

pect of God and what we should expect of ourselves and

others. Don’t we expect God to be patient, compassion-

ate, loving, merciful and wise? Don’t we trust that God

will provide for our needs, bestow peace in our hearts

and be a source of courage and strength? Saint Paul, then,

urges that our lives reflect these virtues and more so that

others will know that God is alive in the world. The con-

text of this responsibility of faith is that we do it as be-

loved children of God, as beloved sisters and brothers.

While family life is not always easy or without its chal-

lenges, the family is the most fundamental structure of

love and support in our world. We seek to reflect the

love of God as husbands and wives, parents and children,

aunts and uncles. And as a family of faith this love must

flow through us for others as we build up the Kingdom of

God. May our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive!

inspire us to live in love as a sisters and brothers in God

our Father. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more

and to stay informed.
