Welcome to the 2017 – 18 season.

Our 39th season of concerts offers the usual mix of well established artists and those who are newer to the scene.

In the former category are Moray Welsh and Martin Roscoe who begin our season with a cello and piano recital. Martin, our President, plays for us regularly and has played here with Moray as part of the Cropper/Welsh/Roscoe Trio.

The Schubert Ensemble has been playing together for 35 years and has an unrivalled reputation in the Piano Quartet repertoire. We are fortunate to have them as, just after we booked them, they announced that they would retire as an Ensemble in 2018.

The members of the Gould Piano Trio are no strangers to Alnwick and Northumberland; their Corbridge Chamber Music Festival has been going for 18 years. We look forward to their concert in early February.

We have two contrasting piano recitals. Chiyan Wong is a young pianist, born in Hong Kong, but who has lived and studied in the UK since the age of 12. His interest in Busoni and Liszt is reflected in the programme he will perform.

Pascal Rogé exemplifies the finest in French pianism and he brings us an all French programme ending with Debussy’s first book of Preludes.

The season ends with the Piatti Quartet, a young British String Quartet with a growing reputation, concluding their recital with Debussy.

By accident, rather than design, we have two themes running through the season with French music in four concerts and works by Beethoven in five out of the six concerts as well as two new works, following a world premiere by John Casken in our last season. The Schubert Ensemble has commissioned more than 80 new works and brings a short piece by Charlotte Bray. The Gould has commissioned a Piano Trio from Mark Simpson for their 25th anniversary in 2017.

We hope you enjoy the rich variety in this season’s music given by some of the finest musicians around.
