Hello Parents and friends,

As you have seen on the front page, we will be celebrating the National Day of Action against Bullying and

Violence next Friday. As a school we have decided to turn this day into an entire week of action. This

year’s theme is ‘Bullying No Way! Take action every day’ and it is aimed to get school communities

to turn ideas into actions. I am pleased to advise that after significant work and consultation with students,

parents, teachers and professionals we are taking the ideas heard from all members of the Templestowe

Park PS community in 2018 and putting them into action.

Idea 1

Our students told us they needed help with playing games and how to handle bullying and teasing.

Action

We investigated a range of student leadership

initiatives and decided upon the highly

successful Positivity, Leadership and Activated

Youth (PLAY) program. In early February, 30 of

our Grades 5&6 students undertook a full day

training session with PLAY experts, learning how

to create fun games for their peers and younger

students. They also learnt how to encourage

students to play games and to resolve conflicts.

The PLAY leader program will be launched on

Tuesday and our leaders will be wearing purple

PLAY bibs so students can easily see them.

They will be ready to organise games with

students and to assist in resolving any issues

during every single lunchtime throughout the

year.

After consultation with students and

professionals we have designed a poster for our

students and teachers to tell the difference

between teasing and bullying and what to do if

they are faced with these issues. This poster

will be displayed in all classrooms around the

school to provide important strategies when

dealing with bullying or teasing. If you want a copy for home you can find one in the ‘School

Documentation’ section under ‘Student Welfare’ on Compass. I recommend that all families have one at

home too.

Idea 2

Our Students told us that were unsure about how to tell us if they are having problems.

Action

All teachers will undertake further training on Circle Time in Term 2. Circle Time is an activity that is used

to help develop positive relationships between children. It aims to give them tools to engage with and

listen to each other. It is often used as an opportunity to solve problems that are affecting the class, for

example too much talking during lessons, or someone being picked on. The whole class takes part in

Circle Time at the same time, usually led by their teacher, who sits in the circle with their pupils. The

circle encourages unity, respect, turn-taking and working together towards a shared vision.

We will also provide an anonymous student feedback box in every classroom so students can express to

the teacher if they are having an issue or if they would like to highlight a positive behaviour. This will

allow teachers to track issues and provide assistance if a child is not comfortable in expressing their

thoughts.

Idea 3

Parents told us that they didn’t know how to assist their child

with bullying or teasing and how to inform the school properly.

Action

With assistance from anti-bullying organisations we have

produced the ‘How to respond if you believe your child is

bullying or being bullied’ Handbook for all parents. This

Handbook covers the following topics:

What is Bullying and not-bullying?

Signs your child might exhibit if they are being bullied.

Strategies for your child to deal with bullying or teasing.

How to respond if you believe your child is bullying other

children or being bullied.

How to report bullying or teasing concerns to Templestowe

Park and the course of action that we will take.

Earlier this term we hosted the Cyber Safety Parent Workshop

with the Alannah and Madeline Foundation and it was a very

informative evening. Handouts on the following topics have

been provided to the community:

Current cyber issues.

Parents resources.

Top 10 tips for parents.

The ‘How to respond if you believe your child is bullying or being bullied’ handbook will be published on

the Compass Newsfeed. This handbook, the cyber safety resources and other student wellbeing resources

will be permanently kept in the Community Section of Compass (choose School Documentation

from the drop down menu then School Community Information then the Student Welfare folder).

Idea 4

Parents requested an opportunity to meet, discuss and provide feedback on wellbeing issues that their

child may be facing.

Action

We will be hosting our first Coffee & Chat for 2019 on Wednesday, 13 March at 7:00pm in the staffroom.

At this meeting we will be unpacking our student wellbeing and anti-bullying strategies and leading a

discussion about student wellbeing.

We will be hosting these meetings once a term to provide you with a forum to discuss student wellbeing.

I invite you to come along and be a part of the conversation next Wednesday night. Please click on the

link below to confirm your attendance at the Coffee and Chat.

https://goo.gl/forms/wJ3zcxdiKmUvvXVJ2

I thank all students, parents, teachers and the wider school community for working together to reduce

bullying and teasing and to improve student wellbeing. The initiatives outlined above are one part of our

overall wellbeing program. Our RRIPO values and mentoring program, Positive Education program, Child

Safe strategies, student clubs and substantial student leadership initiatives all work together to develop

strong student efficacy and wellbeing.

We cannot work alone in this area and it the responsibility of every single member of our community to

work together to provide a safe, harmonious and successful school community. As a school we look

forward to working with you all in the coming weeks, months and years.

School Council Elections Close Today at 4:00pm

All parents still have a short time to submit their ballot papers before 4:00pm today. The vote count will

take place on Tuesday, 12 March; we will inform the community of the results after this time. Once again,

thank you to all of our nominees and I wish them all the best.

School Attendance

It’s Not OK to be Away

Unfortunately we have a number of students

who have recorded a significant number of

absences this year. Regular attendance at

school is very important for your child's

learning and social development. Very good

attendance is 95% and above.

Of course, sometimes children are sick and

need to stay home to get well - and that's OK!

But other than that, children need to be at

school as much as possible to ensure the

BEST opportunity for learning.

I have included a table to indicate what missing school can means when you measure it over their entire

time at school. It is very surprising and quite shocking. If you require any assistance to get your child to

school please do not hesitate to ask the school.

Principals’ Awards

There are two Principals’ awards from our last two assemblies. I

would like to congratulate Georgia M and Cate R from Grade 6. They

are both outstanding role models in our community and have an

excellent attitude towards all areas of school. Both students been

named as School Leaders in 2019 and are already making a positive

impact in their areas of responsibility. Congratulations girls! I know

you are going to do a great job this year!

Principal Contract Extension

I have recently been informed by Judy Rose (Regional Director) that School Council have recommended

my contract as Principal at Templestowe be extended for a further five-year period with an end date of 5

October 2024.

I would like to thank the School Council and wider school community for their support and confidence in

me. It is a privilege to lead Templestowe Park PS and I look forward to the next five years.

Have a wonderful long weekend and see you next week!

Students in Grades 1 and 2 visited CERES last week. The weather was extremely hot but everyone had

fun learning more about water. After taking a lovely bus ride to CERES, we visited the toilets and learnt

to use a half flush for wee and a full flush when we use more toilet paper, or for poo (and we all had a

big giggle about these words)! We all participated in four learning experiences: A River's Tale, A Merri

Creek Walk, Netting for Water Bugs and Water Savers Games. We will be following up from this excursion

for our Inquiry and also in STEM (for the Science Talent Search).

Some of the students in Grade 2BF had this to say about the day:

“The Merri Creek was great! We caught Waterboatmans using a net and spoon.” Simi

“My Dad came on the excursion, I loved sitting next to him on the bus! He was a great helper.” Cooper S

“We went on a bushwalk and we used our 4 senses to discover more about nature.” Jayden C

“We went on a bushwalk and

saw lots of rocks. The Merri

Creek was originally named

‘Rocky Rock.’ ” Ben

“We made pollution in a

pretend river, it was bad for

the animals.” Talia

“I liked the excursion because

the smell of Merri Creek

reminded me of the Yarra

River.” Violet

Absences

Parents are responsible for keeping up-to-date approvals for their children’s absences on Compass. When

you log onto your parent welcome page a short message will appear above the newsfeed on the top right

hand side of the screen. You will then need to click on the link ‘Click

here for more information’ where you will then see a list of times that

your child was absent from school. By first clicking on the box of the

dates needing your approval, then the “man” with the green tick on

his shoulder, you will be able to approve your child’s absences.

A detailed explanation of this process can be found in the ‘School Documentation’ section within the

Community dropdown menu on the parent welcome page. If you require any other help please do

not hesitate to contact the school office.

Late Arrivals and Early Departures

Students who arrive ‘LATE to’ or ‘LEAVE EARLY from’ the school must also have “approvals” logged by

parents. Please note that these approvals can only be recorded after the fact as they are “time stamped”

by Compass. Parents/Carers are not to pre-approve these partial day absences.

All students who arrive late to school must report to the office to ensure they are not marked as absent

for the first session; parents do not need to accompany the students on these occasions. However,

students must always be signed out by a parent or carer that is listed as a student contact. If your child

is being signed out by someone who is not authorised to do so, that adult must bring a letter of authority

with them.

We have certainly been busy in Performing Arts this term. We have Prep students working on a dance

and creative movement unit, moving to music and focusing on different locomotor and non-locomotor

movements. Grade 1 students are commencing a music unit on the glockenspiel and aiming to learn the

music notes. Whilst Grade 3 students are learning a drama unit focusing on characterization, body and

facial expressions to communicate stories and ideas.

Production

This year is a Production year at Templestowe Park! Excitement is starting to build and at the moment, I

know many teachers are fielding questions about what, where, when, how and who!

Our production will be on stage at Doncaster Secondary Performance Centre on:

Wednesday, 4th September; and

Thursday, 5th September 2019.

This year we will be having a matinee and evening performance on each day. Thus giving students more

opportunity to perform on stage and to an audience.

Please note that Doncaster Secondary College is located at 123 Church Road, Doncaster, 3108.

At this stage, there is no announcement on what production we will be doing. I hope that with all contracts

soon to be completed we can let our school community know at the start of Term 2.

Choir

Choir is well underway with many students coming along on Wednesdays during session 5. Please

encourage your child/children to maintain their commitment to attending and rehearsing for our future

assembly performance. Please stay tuned for a date as to when we will be performing at assembly.

Parent Classroom Reps – Volunteers Required

If you would like to be a classroom rep for your child's grade, please email me, Emma White (PFA

me with your email address and mobile phone number.

As at Tuesday this week we had reps for the following grades: PB (two reps), PM, 1A, 1L, 3K and, 5T. Reps

help out the PFA with some of our fundraising events, coordinate teacher gifts and generally act as a

liaison between parents and teachers. It is often a great idea to share this role with another parent.

Please let me know if you are interested by Tuesday, 12th March, at the very latest.

It was so great to see everyone at the Heart Foundation Walking

Group last Friday.

Please join us every Friday, at 9.00am at the Templestowe Park

cup of tea/coffee at a local cafe if you are interested.

Heart health is so important and it affects us all one way or

from heart disease?

Walking helps to reduce stress, be more alert, have a healthier body and build strong relationships. It is

a social, fun, free and easy activity to stay healthy and happy. Just 30 minutes a day can keep you healthy

and reduce the risk of illness such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday!

Our first Active Travel day for 2019 will be in 2 weeks time on National Ride2School Day on Friday, 22nd

March. All students are encouraged to ride, scoot or walk to school.

It is fine to drive to starting points such as Templestowe Reserve (Porter Street), Templestowe Cemetery

(Church Road) or Newmans Road Shops.

Later in the morning a hands-up count will occur for each class to determine the most active class. We

also have some bike bells to give away to active travellers!

Stay active over the long weekend!

MARCH 2019

Hi to all our wonderful families at OSHC. It has been a busy

few weeks here at OSHC; all children have now settled into

our new environment and are enjoying the new space. We

have plenty of different arts and crafts to role play and

indoor sports activities. It’s a credit to all children using

their imaginations in all different aspects of the program, and a big thankyou to all educators who work

along side me, their input is much appreciated. So well done to all.

Second-Hand and Lost & Found – School Uniforms - ONLY

Parents from the school have created a Templestowe Park “buy,

swap and sell” group on Facebook in an effort to help families

locate lost and found jackets and other items of uniform; it will

also be a place to sell off old uniforms. We encourage you to

look at the group to see if it helps you in any way.

The group can be found by clicking on the following link:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/164130594118642/.

The school’s Uniform Shop will continue to sell any second-hand

items that have previously been given to them, but all future

items will be redirected to the above group.
