1. this ‘ Issm-ul-ishaara – demonstrative pronoun‘ - هذا

Is pronounced هاذا but written without the first Alif

It is used to refer to objects that are near

The word that follows is the noun (object) being referred to, e.g.: .This is a book : هذا كتاب

2. Arabic has no word equivalent to the English copula ‘is’

This can be demonstrated in the following example:

’هذا كتاب‘

So here the words for هذا and the predicate كتاب is being referred to without any copula. The literal translation of the above example would read: ‘this a book’ so the word ‘is’ can be implied in the above example to make the

sentence read: ‘this is a book’.

3. There is no word in Arabic corresponding to ‘a’ in English as in:

‘This is a book’

The tanween or the double vowel sign the n-sound) at

the end of Arabic nouns (kitaabu-n) ٌ is the Arabic

indefinite article that corresponds to the English ‘a/ an’.
