Maths – Measuring Mass

Begin by taking a look at the slideshow to help you understand how to

measure with non-standard units of measurements.

When both sides of the scales are the same height, this means the

scales are balanced because the mass is equal on both sides. We usually

use the words 'weigh' and 'weight' when we are talking about mass.

Madagascar

Madagascar is

here in red.

Map of the world

Madagascar is an island that lies approximately 400km off

the south-coast of the continent of Africa. The island is the

fourth largest island in the world. Madagascar has several

different landscapes and geographical areas. It is very

mountainous and has a big Rainforest.

Madagascar has two main languages: French (because it was once

ruled by the French) and Madagasy. It got its independence from the

French in 1960 and became a Republic in 1993. Its flag has three

colours – red, white and green.

Scientists and Geographers say that Madagascar

broke away from Africa almost 160 million years

ago and that is why new species developed there.

The people of Madagascar have a very high

respect for their ancestors. They bury them in

high caves so they can be nearer to heaven.

Lemur

The plants and animals found in Madagascar have evolved and changed

differently from living things on other continents. This means that

Madagascar is home to plants and animals that are found nowhere else

in the world and they live in the Madagascan rainforest.

Although Madagascar provides the rest of the world

with half of its precious stones like sapphires and

diamonds, it is one of the poorest but most beautiful

countries in the world.
