Goodbye Year 12’sThe last week for our Year 12’s
was one filled with twerking, tears,
and thanks. To kick things off, the
students congregated on the school
oval at 9am on 24 October for Dress-
Up Day. Many ‘selfies’ and group
photos were taken of characters such
as Katy Perry and her strategically
placed cup-cakes, Michael Jackson,
a Fruit Ninja, the devious boys from
‘Breaking Bad,’ Team Adrenaline
Cheerleaders, two oversized pea
pods, European tourists and the list
goes on…..
After participating in a series of fun
tabloid sports, the students took to
the lower quadrangle for their parade
at recess for the whole school to
see. Mention must go to the muscle
men and their protein shakes, the
Adam’s Family and the 80’s dancers
for putting on a great show. Even Ylvis
the fox made an appearance. Thanks
are extended to Mr Wilding for putting
the soundtrack together.
Day turned into night and the
students descended on Fraser’s
Restaurant in Kings Park to enjoy
the amazing majesty of the Perth
City sky-line. To begin the night, a
video, deftly edited by Mr Docherty,
was shown to students who laughed
at the staff rendition of the ‘Harlem
Shake.’ This was followed by some
interesting, quirky and downright
mischievous quotes from staff and
students alike about random topics
such as ‘favourite pick up lines’ and
‘pet hates.’ Amazing food, combined
with a red and white lolly buffet left all
dinner-dance goers with a sense of
fulfilment.
The next morning, parents, staff and
students attended the Year 12 Final
Assembly to congratulate subject
award winners. Mr Draper also looked
very smug when he accepted the
Principal’s cup from a 4-0 loss to the
students. This is the first time in a few
years that the staff were able to hold a
consecutive two year reign on the cup.
My closing speech took some time to
get started as the tears came and the
flood gates opened. But with a hug
from Imogen Howes, I was able to
get to the end of the speech, which
recognised the achievements of
these special individuals.
The graduation ceremony, to be held
on 9 December, is an exciting time for
all students as they and their families
celebrate this important milestone
in their lives. With WACE exams
consuming their time, the Leavers'
break will be a great time for all of
them to unwind.

Term 4 is always such an exciting time of year with so many special events to celebrate the achievements of our students. These include the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony, the Specialist Tennis Program Presentation Evening, Special Art Exhibition, Year 7 Orientation Day and final assemblies for Years 8, 9 and 10.
Earlier this term the Year 12 students were farewelled at their final school assembly which included the presentation of subject awards to the highest achieving students. The Class of 2013 impressed us with their overall high standards with many students being within a mark or less of the prize winners. At the assembly we also acknowledged the recipients of two awards that recognise leadership and personal excellence –
Jacy Pan, our Head Girl was the recipient of the Long Tan Leadership Award.

The announcement of the ‘special awards’ and Dux for 2013 will be made at the Graduation Ceremony and will be included in the final Bulletin for the year.
It was great to see so many students participating in our social functions this term, with the great success of the Year 11 Dinner Dance and river cruises for Year 9 & 10. The World Challenge Teams comprising of 32 Applecross students are gearing up for their trip to Sri Lanka. The teams will be leaving on Monday 2 December. We wish them all the best on their adventure.

Graduate Teachers Moving UpAs an Independent Public School, 2012 was the first time in memory that Applecross SHS had the opportunity to select and employ Graduate teachers. These young educators are, for the most part, currently completing their second year with us. They add a new dimension to the school and play an essential role in reinvigorating our workforce.
The Teacher Registration Board requires that all teachers move from Provisional to Full Registration within their first three years of practice and we are delighted that nine of our beginning teachers have recently achieved the requirements for full registration.
We would like to recognise the contributions that these young teachers have made to our school and congratulate them on their successful transition to full registration. For beginning teachers, there is a high attrition rate within the first 12 months of employment but the calibre of our graduates allowed them to meet their various challenges with creditable professionalism.
Congratulations to: Mark Cornish, Katie Doyle, Ray Dickson, Lance Hinds, Drew Mayhills, Leanne O’Malley, Julie Reed, Stephanie Robinson and Morgan Siggers. Their achievement was recently celebrated at a special morning tea.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the graduates’ mentor teachers whose support and encouragement were invaluable throughout the provisional registration period. These teachers generously shared their time, knowledge and expertise; provided exemplary models of professional practice; and generally provided practical support to supplement what had been learned at university.

Duke of Edinburgh’s AwardCongratulations to Bronte Stagbouer who has achieved a Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. She will receive a letter, certificate and badge at the next Year 10 assembly. The Duke of Edinburgh award engages, equips, empowers and rewards young Australians who make a commitment to learning new skills, improving physical fitness, volunteering in the community and completing an adventurous journey. Bronte is working towards her Gold award and hopes to achieve it by the end of Year 12.
Year 10 River CruiseWednesday 30 October was a perfect night for the Year 10 River Cruise. The water was calm, the evening warm and a gentle breeze blew, cooling the rather sweaty dancers. The Year 10’s packed the dance floor all night showing off their moves and jumping around with excess energy. Everyone had a great time! The staff from Captain Cook Cruises commented on the way the students behaved and were thrilled that there was very little mess at the end of the night. Ten staff members gave up their time to help supervise the evening and each one of them commented on the wonderful behaviour of this group. Social events are a great opportunity for students to demonstrate the school values of mutual respect and personal best in a public environment.
World ChallengeWe have 37 excited students leaving for Sri Lanka on 1 December to participate in a World Challenge. Applications were accepted over 18 months ago and the students have been working or fundraising to pay their way since then. We have also held a number of group fundraising activities including a movie night, a lap-a-thon and a Sri Lankan themed dinner. The students have raised almost $10 000 towards the projects we will undertake. Both teams would like to acknowledge and thank all their families and friends who supported the main events.

Some items that may be of interest include a York multi gym, a lat pull-down machine and some free weights. If interested, please contact Mr Samanek and make an offer before the 28th of November. If successful, you will have to dismantle and remove any equipment yourself by the 11 December.

Earthwatch Student Challenge ScholarshipsCongratulations to Ella Meechan (Year12), Sasha Baker and Tara Sharma (Year 11) for becoming successful applicants for this Australia-wide student research program.
The three students from Mr Mengler’s Biology classes will be gaining valuable research skills with a team of student volunteers led by an expert scientist in the area of Conservation Research.
Ella will be camping in the Blue Mountains of NSW for a week this
December, studying endangered species of frogs.
Tara will be studying microbats of the Melbourne suburbs while Sasha will be studying freshwater turtles in the lakes around Melbourne. Both girls are staying at Trinity College for a week this December.
All three girls are excited for this rare opportunity, gaining access to three of the 36 fully funded scholarships available Australia –wide.

Applecross SHS student distinguish themselves at ICAS 2013Applecross SHS students have distinguished themselves
in various competitions over the course of the year. The
International Competitions and Assessments for Schools
(ICAS) and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute’s National
Chemistry Quiz were among the competitions our students
participated in again in 2013. Special congratulations go to
Jessicca Khaw of Year 8, Junn Wenng Foon of Year 9 and
Gabriel Teo of Year 10 for earning the best ICAS results in their
year group. Congratulations also to Athena Dworakowski,
Kamran Ahmed, Gabriel Teo, Richard Maddever and Tara
Sharma for their High Distinctions and Aaron Thomson and
Toby Smith for their Distinctions in the Australian National

APPLECROSS SHS TAKES 4TH PLACE IN THE NATIONAL SCIENCE ENGINEERING CHALLENGE 2013More than 250 students from eight high schools from as far away as Perth and Hobart travelled to Southern Cross in Lismore (on the NSW Far North Coast) campus for the one day Science Engineering Challenge National Competition 2013, which was designed to inspire students to study Science and Engineering at a senior level.
The National Final schools were selected after competing in regional and super Science and Engineering Challenges throughout the year. In all, the host state of NSW had three schools qualify for the competition. Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and of course WA entered one qualifying team each. The logistics of organising a team from WA, at such short notice was difficult. However we managed to send 18 students and two teachers over to participate in the event.
Over the course of the day our seriously jet lagged students, who had only arrived in Lismore the afternoon before, competed with the seven other finalist schools in eight activities. These activities were scrutinised rigorously during the competition and judged against strict criteria after each event. The competition required that students work in small school teams to complete each activity.
Western Australia faced a significant disadvantage with only 2 students per activity, as compared with the teams from all other schools having the maximum 4 students per activity. In spite of this disadvantage, our students won two of the eight individual activities. Our day was also cut short with our team having to leave the competition early to catch the flight back to Perth. On the way to the airport the competition organisers called our two supervising teachers, Mrs Aniela Wooldridge and Mr Mark Cornish to inform the team of some very good news. In spite of our team’s disadvantage, Applecross SHS representing WA had taken fourth place in the competition. I want to congratulate each member of the Year 9 AE class for the part they played in the State and National Finals. I also want to thank the parents of students who competed in Lismore for their financial support and the P&C for their sponsorship. Much thanks also to Mrs Aniela Wooldridge and Mr Mark Cornish for agreeing on very short notice to supervise our students. Well done all round, Team Applecross!

Teaching ExcellenceOur school recognises the importance of good teachers, and we therefore promote and reward high quality teaching whenever possible. One of the ways we encourage teacher improvement is through the provision of professional learning opportunities and assistance in applying for Senior Teacher and Level 3 Teacher status. We also make nominations for available awards. This year we have at least 15 teachers involved in working towards achieving advanced teacher standards and we have had outstanding success in having two of our teachers selected as finalists in the WA Education Awards.
We would like to congratulate our Science HOLA Tony Herbert and his colleague, Science teacher Mark
Cornish, who are finalists in this year’s WA
Education Awards. Tony was nominated
in the Secondary Teacher of the Year
category and is one of four finalists from
schools across the state. We recently
hosted our Regional Executive Director,
Margaret Collins and her colleague
Richard Lobb, when they visited the
school as part of the selection process.
Mark Cornish, who is completing his
second year at Applecross SHS, is
one of four finalists in the category
of Beginning Teacher of the Year. He
recently completed a phone interview,
with selection panel member’s tasks
with distinguishing amongst the finalists.

at a breakfast ceremony on December
2 Given the competition at this level,
it is an outstanding achievement to
have been selected as finalists and we
congratulate Tony and Mark on their
accomplishment.
In another sphere of teaching excellence, Mileva Tubbs is pursing accreditation as Lead teacher within the AITSL (Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership) standards. She has already succeeded in the initial phase, based on written documentation, and last week she completed the practical assessment section. We wish her well in this process which is premised on national standards and is in its first year of operation.
VETApplecross recently welcomed the Commonwealth Bank Foundation to deliver their free, financial education
StartSmart workshops to our Year 11 Career Education students. Delivered in class to students by a facilitator, StartSmart
changes the way young people learn about money. By making money management interactive, engaging and fun, our
students were equipped with the confidence and competence they need to make smart decisions about money.
Our school has proudly joined the Commonwealth Bank Foundation in its mission to improve the financial literacy
of Australia’s young people. Overall, the program proved to be a highly beneficial experience for students and was

Creative WritingCongratulations to all those poets whose poetry was accepted and published in Primo Lux 2013. This year saw a most successful launch at Clancy’s in Fremantle on Monday 21 October, where over thirty young poets from many schools gathered to receive their copy and read their poems out to a most appreciative audience.
Year Twelve students Marney Anderson and Molly Brennan received extra recognition from WA Poets for their poems. Marney won the WA Poets Poetry Prize for her poem “Widowspeak” and Molly was Highly Commended for her poem “Days of the Bleak”. Both girls are to be commended for their manipulation of language and different ideas. Primo Lux is a student anthology of poetry for all Western Australian students and this year it turned ten. Thanks goes to Applecross Senior High School for supporting this project.
The Year Twelve student team of Angry Orchards entered the Katherine Susannah Pritchard ‘Book in a Day’ competition and won the Best Artwork Prize for the third year in a row as well as coming second for Best Book entitled Morinda’s Jam.
Well done. More importantly this team, as well as the Year Ten
team, Lake’s Army, gave up their time and worked together
to create two novels in the course of one day. Both novels will
be placed in the Princess Margaret Hospital Library for the
sick children to read and enjoy.

Year 12 Revision WorkshopsThroughout Year 12 students studying Stage 2 and 3 courses have the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops aimed at maximising their academic results. In the past, revision workshops usually of a two hour duration run over three weeks have been available to all students in a wide variety of subjects. There has generally been a good response to these workshops which have now run for several years. They are run by experienced teachers from outside the school so students can get a different perspective from another person, in addition to the work covered by the excellent teachers at Applecross SHS.
During 2013 we have further developed this program with two new initiatives, both of which have been very positively received. Firstly we have worked with a company called Elevate Education. This company uses presenters who have in the last few years sat the WACE exams themselves so they have recent relevant experience. All presenters achieved very highly in their exams. The Year 12 students participated in a workshop focussing on study routines for the rest of the year, exam strategies and other tips aimed at maximising their final exam result. The feedback was excellent. Students really connected with these young presenters and they highly recommended that the program continue in future years.
Finally, we trialled a Saturday morning revision program in our Science subjects aimed at the top third of students in each
subject. This was a three hour session on a Saturday morning in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Human Biology. The focus of this program was to revise the most difficult concepts in each of these courses as well as exam techniques. The tutors were highly experienced teachers who have been teaching these subjects for many years. Attendance was very good and feedback was excellent. It is our intention to expand this program in 2014. Many thanks to Mr Herbert, HOLA of Science, for sourcing tutors and organising the sessions.
We now have a very comprehensive program of revision workshops. Now it is up to the students to take advantage of them. Unfortunately it is clear that some students who are struggling with the work in their courses often do not attend revision workshops. This is an opportunity to get extra help for a very small cost, as these workshops are very heavily subsidised by the school and the Parents and Citizens Association. Students who are successful work hard on an ongoing basis and take advantage of opportunities when they arise. I would encourage all Year 11 and 12 students to participate in these workshops when they are offered next year.

YEAR 12 OUTDOOR EDUCATION - SEA TREK 2013The Year 12 Outdoor Education course culminated their time at Applecross SHS with their final camp. The 2013 Sea Trek gave the students a great opportunity to showcase their skills learnt over the duration of the course and from previous years' experiences and camps.
Throughout the year the students worked towards attaining their Recreational Skippers Ticket and their National Power Boat Handling
Certificate in the lead up to the Day Sail
and the Sea Trek. They spent 12 weeks
at South of Perth Yacht Club improving their sailing skills.
The Sea Trek saw the students spend the first day travelling to Garden Island for a visit and having lunch before
returning to Fremantle Harbour and the Swan River. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the next two days was not looking good so it was decided to spend the two nights camping at Pelican Point and spend days two and three exploring the river up to Tranby House.
The students took this on board and managed to get some really good sailing on the river, as well as applying their skills and knowledge to the various navigation points past the City Foreshore, Burswood and all the way through Maylands and Bayswater.
During Sea Trek students must complete boat watches throughout the night to monitor the boats and their anchors. It is one of the great challenges of Sea Trek to complete two nights of boat watch as well
as sailing and motoring throughout the day exposed to the elements. It is very tiring and the students are usually thoroughly exhausted by the end of the camp.
The students should be congratulated on their efforts and they consistently received very high praise on their skills, group work and their behaviour from the Marine Education Boat Shed staff member who accompanied the Sea Trek.
It is very much a highlight for me as a teacher to see the students come so far from where they started and the progression they made to the finale. They ae to be wholeheartedly congratulated.

Australian Mathematics Competition - 2013131 students from Years 8 to 12 competed very successfully in the Australian Mathematics competition on August 1 2013.
