• What is a Mission?• What did the Spanish hope to accomplish with
the mission/presidio system?• Did any succeed/fail?

• Established near present day Crockett, Texas.• Caddo Indians• Lasted 3 years• Spanish gave Caddo diseases.• Caddo thought disease was from baptism
water.• Caddo didn’t need Spanish, They were doing
fine!
Los Adaes
• Near modern Texas/Louisiana border• Help Spanish watch out for French• French raided mission, finding nothing but
chickens.• Missionaries/Soldiers retreated back to San
Antonio de Valero
Santa Cruz de San Saba
• Near Present-Day Menard Texas• Built for Lipan Apaches• Apaches would convert if Spanish would protect
them from Comanche.• Mission built in Comanche territory…Lipan
wanted to start a war between Spanish and Comanche.
• Comanche attacked in 1758 and killed missionaries and burned down mission.
