If you google the phrase “landmarks in the United States,” you will find images and articles about famous places in our country, such as the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, the Saint Louis Arch, Mt. Rushmore, and the Golden Gate Bridge. My apologies if I missed your favorite. Visiting a famous landmark anywhere in the world evokes a sense of significance and history.

In the Bible, the word “landmark” refers to a boundary marker. A landmark might have been a heap of stones or a pillar of stones. The placement of landmarks was intentional. They were legal points of reference and considered sacred. Property owners constructed landmarks to be used in much the same way that modern surveyors drive stakes into the ground at the borders of property.

In Israel, land was an inheritance and was to stay in the family. If land was sold due to hardship, it was restored to the family in the year of Jubilee. (See Lev. 25:8–19.) As an example of the generational heritage of land, when wicked King Ahab tried to buy Naboth’s field, Naboth refused to sell because his land was the inheritance of his fathers. (See 1 Kings 21:1-3.)

Many ancient legal codes, including the Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Jewish, prohibited the removal of landmarks. There are strict Old Testament laws in the Bible prohibiting moving or removing landmarks. Moving a landmark was a form of theft—stealing land by moving the boundaries.

Several Scriptures refer to the respect given to landmarks, and they shed light on the importance of boundaries to God.

“You shall not remove your neighbor’s landmark, which the men of old have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess” (Deuteronomy 19:14).

“Cursed is the one who moves his neighbor’s landmark. And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’” (Deuteronomy 27:17).

“Some remove landmarks; They seize flocks violently and feed on them” (Job 24:2).

“Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set” (Proverbs 22:28).

“Do not remove the ancient landmark, nor enter the fields of the fatherless; for their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you” (Proverbs 23:10-11).

“The princes of Judah are like those who remove a landmark; I will pour out My wrath on them like water” (Hosea 5:10).

Moving a landmark meant changing the traditional land allotments and cheating a poor landowner out of what little land he owned. When a landmark was moved, even a few feet, someone was robbed and, literally, lost ground.

Landmarks in the physical world determine where one’s property begins and ends. Landmarks, and the boundaries they define, inform other decisions—such as where you can install a fence, how far you can go without trespassing, and where you can construct a building.

Rick Nixon, a civil engineer in our church, shared the following information with me regarding surveying and landmarks: “A standard unit of measure, that is defined and unchanging, is essential to describing the location of landmarks and land boundaries. For the future protection of property boundaries, landmarks are documented with written descriptions available to the public. Our system of preparing a written deed/legal description and recording them in courthouse records allows for verification and protection of the intent of a land boundary. These recorded legal documents are the ‘bible’ for a surveyor to follow in finding landmarks and establishing property boundaries.”

Landmarks have spiritual applications. Biblical landmarks define our spiritual territory. They determine our values, show us where to set up behavioral fences, tell us how far we can go, and help us lay claim to what is rightfully ours by spiritual inheritance.

Biblical principles are the landmarks of the Christian life. Our Apostolic boundaries are neither arbitrary nor negotiable. They are fixed stakes in the ground. They are absolute. The doctrines of salvation, separation, supernatural gifts, spiritual life, and stewardship are a few of the landmarks that must never be moved.

In the past few decades, there has been an assault on absolutes in our culture. Moral boundaries are becoming obsolete for many as moral relativism becomes the norm. These landmarks were not moved a mile at a time. They were moved an inch at a time, one cultural norm after another. Admittedly, the church has lost ground.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to contend for the faith that was once delivered to the saints. (See Jude 1:3.) May God give us the courage to stand our ground and not succumb to the spirit of the age.
