AUSTRALIA BANS ANABOLIC STEROIDS The Australian Racing Board has announced that it will ban the use of anabolic steroids both in and out of competition. The new rule, which will be introduced Nov. 1 and become effective May 1, 2014, will allow six months for treated horses to be free of steroids. The ban will apply to all horses above six months of age while racing, training or spelling. Under current rules, Australian Thoroughbreds must be steroid free on race-day, but the medications are allowed out of competition. "The Australian Racing Board has adopted a zero-tolerance policy to the use of anabolic steroids in competition, training, and spelling, and will institute heavy penalties for breaches of the ban," ARB Chief Executive Peter McGauran said. "The ban on anabolic steroids goes far beyond any other racing jurisdiction outside of Europe and was decided by the ARB Board after lengthy consideration of veterinary and scientific advice and consultation with trainers' and owners' associations. Foremost in the board's consideration was the need for absolute integrity and public confidence in racing. Although the use of steroids has greatly diminished over the years to the point where they are rarely relied upon by trainers, the ARB believes it is in the best interests of the industry that they no longer be available for purposes other than as a therapeutic treatment for young foals." Paul Bittar, Chief Executive of the British Horseracing Authority, welcomed the news, and told Racing Post, AThe Australian Racing Board's decision is very good news and represents a significant step towards our goal of seeing the use of anabolic steroids for racehorses banned across the globe. We will be submitting a paper outlining our position ahead of the IFHA conference in October and we look forward to the matter being discussed next month in Paris." Louis Romanet, Chairman of the International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities, was also supportive, stating, AI welcome and applaud this announcement by the ARB stating a total ban on the use of anabolic steroids both in and out of competition. The ARB is to be commended for this historical decision. Additionally, I look forward to further discussion on this matter among all IFHA members countries to further two key objectives of the IFHA--to coordinate and harmonize the rules of the member countries regarding breeding, racing and wagering and to ensure the quality and fairness of racing in the interest of both breeding and the public.@ INTRIGUING FIELDS DRAWN FOR PARX STAKES Deep and contentious groups of sophomores will line up in Parx Racing=s pair of $1 million stakes Saturday. Conquest Comes Away with $330,000 Colt... Ernie Semersky and Dory Newell=s Conquest Stablesgot a big boost this weekend when the unraced 2-year-old filly My Conquestadory (Artie Schiller) beat the boysin the $205,000 GII TVG Summer S. at Woodbine, avictory that punched her AWin and You=re In@ ticket tothe GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. The man that selected the filly and trains her, MarkCasse, was back to work yesterday for the upstartoperation, pegging down the session-topping StormyAtlantic colt for $330,000. The Ontario-bred colt is ahalf to Bubbles to the Top (Bold Executive) and is fromthe family of MGISW Schossberg. Hill >n= Dale Salesconsigned him as hip 1949. Buying for the first time in earnest this spring,Conquest was one of the leading buyers at the juvenile-in-training sales, and has continued to figureprominently on the sales sheets at the yearling sales.Conquest bought three horses for $820,000 at FTKJULand, after skipping FTSAUG and OBSAUG, haspurchased six thus far at KEESEP for a total of a$1,130,000. The Stormy Atlantic colt was Conquest=spriciest KEESEP purchase. Casse has done exceptionally well for Conquest thusfar. According to brisnet.com, Conquest has sixjuveniles to race this year. Three have already brokentheir maidens... in stakes company. In addition to MyConquestadory, Conquest Whiplash (Hear No Evil) wonthe $150,000 Victoria S. in her own debut in June, while Conquest Titan (Birdstone) graduated in hissecond career start when dominating the $125,000Swynford S. by 5 1/4 lengths Aug. 24. All three winscame at Woodbine. AKnock on wood, we=ve done well so far,@ said Casse.AI don=t think Ernie does anything slow, so he and Dorywent out and put their money up and bought somehorses, and luckily it=s worked out okay.@ Casse confirmed My Conquestadory will likely startnext in the GI Alcibiades S. here at Keeneland Oct. 4.Conquest Titan is targeting the GIII Grey S. a WoodbineOct. 6. Casse is hoping to make the Breeders= Cup withboth. He=s taking his time, meanwhile, with ConquestWhiplash, who tired as the favorite in her latest.

Session Topper for Josham... Yesterday=s $330,000 Stormy Atlantic topper, fromthe 11-year-old Ascot Knight mare Swanky Bubbles, was bred by Ted Burnett=s Josham Farms. TheCanadian-based businessman was on hand to watchthe colt sell. AHe=s very muscular, correct, and looked like he=dbe an early 2-year-old,@Burnett assessed. AHe vettedabsolutely clean, and hisscope was A+. Everythingabout him was attractive, and he was very classy.@ Burnett purchased damSwanky Bubbles as a yearlingfor about $68,000 at the2003 FTCSEP sale. Shedidn=t earn black-type forhim, but was a hard-knockingcheck-getter who bankednearly $75,000. Her true worth, though, has come inthe breeding shed. Burnett sold her first foal, Bubbles to the Top, forabout $70,000 at the 2009 ONTSEP sale, and she=sgone on to place in three stakes and earn over$275,000. Swanky Bubbles=s second foal sadly died ina training accident; this colt was her third. The marehas an Old Forester filly on the ground and is back infoal to Zensational. AAnd she=ll go back to StormyAtlantic next year,@ said Burnett. Cont. p6

Session Topper cont.

Burnett is the president of his family=s BurnacCorporation, a one-man trucking company 60 years agothat grew into massive Toronto-based corporationwhose interests include commercial real estate andfood distribution. A lawyer by education, Burnett maintains abroodmare band of about 20, generally split betweenJohn Sikura=s Hill >n= Dale operation in Kentucky andYvonne Schwabe=s Persley Den Farms in Canada.Schwabe, who was all smiles after yesterday=s sale, raised the Stormy Atlantic colt. Josham is primarily a commercial operation. AWe=llrace what we can=t sell,@ Burnett explained. AAnd we=llbuy the odd filly at the yearling sales and try to getsome black-type, and then put her in the broodmareband. We=re always culling and improving.@

For Upson Downs, Mare’s Been a Rich Find... Gainesway=s Antony Beck saw off a challenge frombloodstock agent Lincoln Collins to land the session=stop-priced filly, an Afleet Alex half-sister to the good 3-year-old filly BrokenSpell (Broken Vow), for$320,000. The filly wasproduced by the stakeswinner Rich Find(Exploit), a half-sister tothe dam of the brilliantbut ill-fated GI KentuckyDerby runner-up EightBelles (Unbridled=s Song). It=s the extended familyof Belong to Me (Danzig). The filly was consignedby the Rankin family=s Upson Downs Farms, based inGoshen, Kentucky. She sold as hip 1886. Upson Downs=s history with the mare goes back 11 years. Along with partner Joseph Fowler and a fewother minor partners, they purchased Rich Find for$52,000 as a KEESEP yearling. The partnership, racingunder the banner of Fowler=s Shadowfax Stable, sentthe filly to trainer Greg Foley and enjoyed somesuccess. Rich Find won five times and earned$145,000, with her victories including the Oliver S. atIndiana Downs in 2004.

Rich Find was just beginning her next career as abroodmare when, in 2008, her pedigree got a hugeboost when close relative Eight Belles won the GII Fantasy S. and ran second to Big Brown (Boundary)in the Derby (she suffered a fatal breakdown shortlyafter the wire). Rich Find proved she herself could get a Grade I-caliber horse in the form of her third foal, Broken Spell, who ran second in last year=s GI Darley Alcibiades S.and more recently ran second in the My Princess JessS. at Saratoga. Upson Downs sold Broken Spell for$85,000 as a KEESEP yearling in 2011; she laterbrought $175,000 as a juvenile-in-training. Upson Downs patriarch Alex Rankin said it=s been funwatching the family develop overthe past decade. AThat=s thebusiness we=re in,@ he said. AYouhope you can improve the family.@ Asked about the decision to breedto Afleet Alex--who stands atGainesway--Rankin explained, AWethought it was a good cross, and atthat time, he was a sire who wasgetting all kinds of runners atdifferent levels of the game. He=scooled off a little now, but he=s avery solid sire.@ Rankin said the filly was a standout on the salesgrounds. AShe=s got a big walk, great size and a greattemperament,@ he said. AShe=s very classy, and shelooks like she might be a two-turn horse that couldhave a chance at winning some really nice races. That=swhat the buyers really liked about her, that she mightbe a two-turn horse that could possibly get them to theClassic-type races.@ When Rankin=s son Hunter came over to inform himthat it was Antony Beck who signed the winning slip,Alex Rankin laughed and said, AHe=s in the same barn asus--so he kept seeing her come out! But listen, younever know when they=re going to break out like that, and that was really fun.@

Bill Farish is back at the Breeders’ Cup helmHorsephotos

BILL FARISH, BREEDERS' CUP BOARD CHAIRMAN Serving as the chairman of the Breeders' Cup boardof directors can be a tough, contentious, sometimesthankless job. No one knows this better than Lane'sEnd's Bill Farish, who spent fiveyears in the position between2006-11. Before stepping down,Farish oversaw some of the biggestchanges in Breeders' Cup history, including the shift to a two-dayformat in 2007. Farish wassucceeded by Tom Ludt, who heldthe chairmanship until this past April, when he was named senior vicepresident of the Stronach Group andannounced he wouldn't seekreappointment. In August, Farish, who hadremained as a Breeders' Cup director, was once again elected as chairman, and has begun a two-year term thatputs him back in one of the mostvisible positions in Thoroughbred racing.

It also puts him right in the middle of some ofracing's biggest battles, namely the fight between pro-and anti-Lasix advocates. The Breeders' Cup tookcriticism earlier this year when it announced that, in arollback from a plan to ban Lasix in all 2013 Breeders'Cup races, it would once again extend the ban only tojuvenile races--the policy in place in 2012. Oliver Tait,Darley's chief operating officer, resigned from theBreeders' Cup board in protest. The issue arose again in August when the Breeders'Cup, in response to heavy pressure from horsemen'sgroups, announced that all horses running in the

2014 Breeders' Cup races, to be heldfor the third-straight year at SantaAnita, will be allowed to run on theanti-bleeding medication. That wasafter California horsemen threatenedto withhold approval for thesimulcasting of the event. An op-edin the British newspaper TheGuardian called the decision"spineless." That Santa Anita will host theBreeders' Cup for three straightyears, and five times in seven years, has also drawn criticism, particularlyfrom East Coast-based owners andtrainers who fear it gives Californiahorsemen too much a home-field

advantage. Cont. p10

Farish Q&A cont.

All isn't gloom and doom, however. The Breeders'Cup drew near-universal praise when, in March, itdecided to award travel allowances to all participantsshipping from outside of California for this year'sBreeders' Cup World Championships at Santa AnitaNov. 1-2. Owners of horses shipping from outside ofNorth America to the Championships will receive a$40,000 travel allowance, and owners of domestichorses shipping to California will receive a $10,000 travel allowance. In addition, the Breeders'Cup reduced entry fees for its Championships racesfrom 3% to 2% of the purse. With all this on the table, Farish has a challenging jobahead of him. Earlier this week, he sat down with theTDN=s Lucas Marquardt to talk about those challenges, and said he's ready to roll up his sleeves and get towork.

TDN: Congratulations on being named chairman of theBreeders' Cup once again. The board has had atumultuous year, with several resignations, a delayedsite announcement and controversy over the Lasixreversal. Tell us why you decided to take on thisresponsibility again, at this particular time.

BF: When Tom [Ludt] took over two years ago, he said,>Bill! Why didn't you warn me about this?= And so I'mreally the crazy one going back in, knowing what I'mgetting myself into. But it's a very exciting time. We'rewell-positioned to do some very exciting things for thesport. Any time an organization takes on big issues, there are going to be differing opinions, and theBreeders' Cup is certainly an area that attracts differentviews. The key for us, for me, is to build consensus, and I think that's what I did best the first time around, and I hope I can do it again.

TDN: There have been a lot of changes to this year'sevent, but let's first talk about the similarities. We'reback at Santa Anita. Why was that decision reached?

BF: Obviously, it's drawn a fair amount of interest frompeople. Site selection is a big decision we have tomake, and there are a lot of things that go intothat--weather, amenities, hotel availability, competingevents locally and nationally, television windows, actualdate availability in that market, and the economicviability of the tracks in the markets we're looking at. One of the positives about Santa Anita is that therehave been a lot of capital improvements there; theycontinue to upgrade their facilities. Being in California,we can also have the [GI Breeders' Cup] Classic inprime time, and our network partner [NBC] is quitehappy to be running the Classic in prime time onnational television. There are a lot things that cametogether to make Santa Anita the obvious choice forthose years. But we'll continue to look at differentvenues in 2015 and beyond.

Farish Q&A cont.

TDN: The Breeders' Cup has found itself a flashpoint ofcriticism due to its Lasix reversal, much of it comingfrom overseas. Looking back, would you do anythingdifferently? And what's your opinion on the decision?

BF: Right now there are some people thinkinglong-term, and some people thinking short-term. We need to get those two together, and it's a greattime for the Breeders' Cup totackle these issues. It's toobad we have them, but I thinkwe're in a unique position ofleadership in the industry toaddress them. We have anoutstanding managementteam and staff, and they'regoing to help lead us throughthat. We would like nothingmore than to achievemedication uniformity, bothnationally and internationally.Ideally, we would like to holdour event under the samerules as other majorinternational events, but in this country, horsemen'sorganizations have an effective veto, given by theInterstate Horseracing Act.

We were in a very difficult spot. Everyone likes to callit a reversal, but the writing was on the wall. There aresome things we can do by house rules, and others wecan't. It's easy for people to say we were 'spineless,'but you have to look at the facts. We've always takena leadership role in issues of safety and integrity, andwe will continue to advocate those view in the hopesof convincing horsemen of the long-term vision ofrunning medication-free.

TDN: Recently, Ireland announced it would join Britainin staging a fall Champions Day. International festivalsare growing in strength and number. How do you feelabout the Breeders' Cup's position in the marketplace, and what are you doing to make sure you remaincompetitive?

BF: I think the more opportunities for owners who havetop horses to run for big purses at big events thebetter, both internationally and in this country. We'rehappy there are more big events out there. We thinkwe're well-positioned with 14 races worth $27 millionin purses and awards this year. We think we have agood spot on the calendar, late in the year. But wehave to do things to compete with those events, andthat's why we have some new things in 2013.

Farish Q&A cont.

We have the across-the-board travel awards, andthat's something the people I've talked to, bothnationally and internationally, are very happy about.Having a $40,000 stipend to come from Europe and a$10,000 stipend to come from the U.S. is attractive. Ihaven't talked to anyone specifically who has said 'Iwon't come without it,' but I have talked to a numberof people who have said it sure makes the decisioneasier. We also have reduced entry fees this year; we cut33% off, from 3% to 2% of the purses. So those aretwo big steps I think are responses to the internationalcompetition, and I think it's good for horsemen allaround.

TDN: One of the things you seem to be focusing on is abetter owner experience. What is on tap for this year, and how will those aspects of enhanced experiencecontinue to grow?

BF: No question. It really is one of the things I wantedto address seven years ago. It wasn't a bad participantexperience, but we had issues like jockeys not getting aparking space--things that should be well down the listof 'taken care of.' Addressing the overall experience ofeverybody was a top priority. In 2010, we put togetherthe Enhanced Experience Committee. Roy Jackson, with his baseball experience, and [TDN publisher BarryWeisbord], with his experience and energy, led thateffort for us, and I think we've seen a lot of goodthings come from that. The Breakfast Marquee wasvery popular, and it will be back this year. The Taste ofthe World event has been popular. And the winner'senclosure afterwards is really drastically improved. Wewant the owners of all the horses, including thealso-rans, to feel like, 'Hey, we've got to get back therewith a horse. That's where we want to be.' And Ithink we're getting very close to that.

TDN: While all racing events like to focus on thecelebrities who attend them, the Breeders' Cup seemsto take it one step further, working to get thosecelebrities to help introduce the sport to the public in abroader fashion. Tell us about the AmbassadorProgram, which was launched last year.

BF: The Ambassador Program has really harnessed theexcitement you see from people in this sport. When youhave a celebrity that has a much greater reach than youor I do, and they have success in the way that BobbyFlay has, or Jim Rome has, it can be a great benefit. Idon't know how many people heard the show whereJim and Bobby talked about the thrill of winning aBreeders' Cup race, but it was just infectious. There'sno way it can't get people's attention. Or when JoeTorre won the Pacific Classic [as a co-owner of GameOn Dude]. His comments after the race werephenomenal. That's what we're trying to harness, those celebrities that already have the passion. Andthose guys seem very willing to do that, and have beena tremendous help so far. Cont. p13

Farish Q&A cont.

TDN: Do you expect Breeders' Cup sponsors toembrace a more integrated role in the event in thefuture?

BF: It's a key program our new chief marketing andrevenue officer Drew Sheinman is focusing on. It's notjust getting sponsors, but building a comprehensiveglobal marketing platform for the Breeders' Cup, whichincorporates, in addition to world class racing, highlydeveloped elements of broadcast, social media, fashion, luxury and lifestyle, which enhance our event into acaptivating international brand. In regards to sponsors, specifically, we want to engage 'best in class' sponsorsthat will really help with our overall mission, andleveraging their marketing expertise with our sport, choosing partners based on quality over quantity. Wewant partners who will not only be there the week ofthe event, but year-round to help promote the sport aswell as their product. We think Drew, and his team, aredoing a great job of executing this plan, we are excitedabout our future.

TDN: At The Round Table this summer, The JockeyClub announced the Fox Sports initiative to get moreracing on TV. What are your plans to deliver thoseviewers through those fall preps and into the Breeders'Cup programming?

BF: The Jockey Club has done a lot of great work tryingto promote the sport in the last few years, and we'reworking with them all the time. We'll continue to dothat and try to get more racing on television. We've gotsome news that will come out in the next couple weeksthat we're excited about that will continue that. Wecertainly want to get as many Breeders' Cup preps ontelevision as possible. We've seen how effective the'Win and You're In' program is--it's exciting-- andpromoting that through television and through digitalmedia is definitely something we'll continue.

TDN: The Breeders' Cup is an event built on fees fromfoals and stallions. The foal crop is half of what it wasjust a few years ago, and there are fewer stallionscreating those foals. What does this mean to revenue? How do you replace those fees?

BF: It's a great question. It's had a tremendous effecton revenue. In 1995, we had close to $20 million installion and foal nominations, and we paid $10 millionout in purses. This year, we'll have roughly $12 millionin stallion and foal nominations, and we'll pay $27 million in purses. So from a nominator'sstandpoint, you're certainly getting more bang for thebuck. We continue to have 95% of stallions that standfor $5,000 or more nominate to the program. Foalnominations have stayed pretty constant--about 50% of foals in any given year are nominated. Wedropped the foal nomination to $400 if you nominateonline, which 85% of people do now. So really, they'repaying a little less, and we're performing a lot better interms of nominations fees to purses and awards.

Farish Q&A cont.TDN: Under your last tenure, you took the Breeders'Cup from one to two days and from eight to 15 raceswith $25 million in purses. What do you want to try toaccomplish as chairman this time around, and do youhave any similarly bold ideas?

BF: I don't know if there's anything that bold in theworks [laughs]. That expansion was a response tocreating more opportunities for owners and breeders, and I think it's been successful. We think maybe weoverstepped with the 15 races, and we dropped backto 14 [eliminating the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint].It's a small change, but we don't want to cannibalizeour races. We'll continue to look at the races we have. We'll also continue to put more emphasis on marketingpartners, and on how we're putting the product out.Technology is still developing, and we'll continue tolook at how we can use it. We're very excited aboutbeing on prime time and network TV.

TDN: What is so special about this event?

BF: That's an easy one--it represents the best of thebest. The best breeding, the best racing, the bestcustomer experience. It can be tough to move aroundbecause of all the people, but if you take the time andgo around the racetrack at the Breeders' Cup, to seewhat is happening is pretty amazing. But there's alwaysroom for improvement, and we have some exciting newthings coming. We'll continue to try and make it thebest of the best.

SIR HENRY CECIL REMEMBEREDBy Emma Berry After a bleak, wet weekend, the sun returned toNewmarket on Monday, rising from behind the hill atopwhich sits Warren Place, home to Sir Henry Cecil foralmost four decades until his death June 11. His

racehorses have continued theseason in fine form under theguidance of his wife, Lady JaneCecil, and as they filed out fromthe rear of Warren Place to thetraining grounds below, theriders would have been able tosee on the distant horizon ElyCathedral, where on Mondayafternoon some 900 members ofthe horse racing community

gathered to commemorate the extraordinary life of theirformer boss. Lord Grimthorpe, who, through his role as racingmanager for Khalid Abdullah, was a confidant of thetrainer, gave a moving eulogy, outlining Cecil'ssensitive approach to horsemanship which, over a44-year career, yielded 114 Group 1 winners, 36 Classics and 75 winners at his most belovedmeeting, Royal Ascot. Leading the service, Reverend Canon David Pritchardsaid, "We recall the high regard in which [Henry Cecil]was held as one of the greatest trainers in history. Weacknowledge his unique talent in getting the best fromthe horses in his care and his personal courage in theface of adversity." Personal recollections and readings were also givenby Cecil's sons Noel and Jake and grandchildren Oliviaand Jack Mackenzie, along with Alan Cooper, racingmanager for the Niarchos family, for whom Ceciltrained the 2007 Oaks winner Light Shift. A large number of Cecil's 80 fellow Newmarkettrainers paid their respects to the man whose absenceon Newmarket Heath is still keenly felt, while amongthose to have traveled from farther afield included hisold sparring partner John Dunlop, who retired only lastyear, and two of Cecil's former assistants, DavidLanigan and Harry Dunlop, both of whom now train inLambourn. Jockeys in attendance included Frankel'sregular partner Tom Queally, who is still stable jockeyat Warren Place, and his predecessors in that role, TedDurcan and Richard Quinn. Following a private funeral in June, Sir Henry Cecilwas laid to rest in Aberdeenshire at Crathes Castle, theancestral seat of his mother's family. His Scottish rootswere commemorated in poignant fashion at the close ofthe memorial service by the plaintive sound of a lonepiper passing through the vast, centuries-old cathedral.

Treve OK... Trainer Criquette Head-Maarek yesterday provided apositive bulletin following the success of Treve (Fr)(Motivator {GB}) in Sunday=s G1 Prix Vermeille atLongchamp. Impressive when extending her unbeatenrecord in the 12-furlong contest, Sheikh Joaan binHamad Al Thani=s acquisition will now be supplementedfor the Oct. 6 G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe. AShelooks perfectly fine, has eaten everything up and isperfect,@ she told PA Sport. AWe are now on the way tothe Arc with her.@ Reflecting on her performance, sheadded, AI am always very relaxed when she runs. I thinkTreve was probably more nervous than her trainer atLongchamp. She was fantastic and showed hertremendous turn of foot to everyone. We haveobviously got to watch the other horses very carefully.Orfevre looked wonderful in the Prix Foy, and the otherJapanese horse was also very good in his trial. We hadthe best time of all the races at Longchamp over thatdistance, though, so that might be very important. Shehas won on soft and on good ground, so I would not beconcerned about what it will be like on Arc day. Shewill have a few days of rest now and then it is back towork.@

Leading Light has something in common withMotivator in that both were sired by Montjeu fromdaughters of Gone West. It was Motivator=s turn toshine the day after the St Leger, when his excitingdaughter Treve did her Arc prospects no harm byadding the G1 Prix Vermeille to her unbeaten run. Glance down Montjeu=s long list of important winnersand you will see that many of them are out ofdaughters of major mile-and-a-half winners, such asDarshaan, Shirley Heights, Surumu, Saumarez and LawSociety. Clearly he didn=t need a speedily bred mare tostrike it rich, but in an industry where stamina is oftenseriously undervalued--indeed scorned--breeders werebound to try to inject an element of speed. The emergence of Motivator from Montjeu=s first cropinevitably planted the seed that Montjeu would benefitgreatly from mares by sons of Mr. Prospector. Andindeed he has. He has now sired five Group 1 winnersfrom mares by four sons of Mr. Prospector--Gone West(Motivator and Leading Light), Kingmambo (Camelot),Woodman and Distant View. He also has group winnersout of daughters of Forty Niner and Machiavellian, aswell as listed winners out of mares by Miswaki andSeeking The Gold. Pour Moi, another of his Derbywinners, has a Conquistador Cielo mare as his seconddam. It is also well worth highlighting Montjeu=s recordwith mares by Gone West=s outstanding 2,000 Guineaswinner Zafonic. He has 15 foals out of Zafonic=sdaughters, of which 11 have started and nine havewon. Three of them--the top-class Papal Bull and thefillies Maria Royal and Pacifique--all won at Group level. For good measure the Irish Oaks winner Chicquita has asecond dam by Zafonic. However, don=t be misled into thinking that these Mr.Prospector mares have succeeded in producing aspeedier type of Montjeu. Motivator stayed well enoughto win the Derby, as did Camelot, and Motivator=s verytalented brother Macarthur won the G2 Hardwicke S.over a mile and a half. The Group 1 winner with aWoodman dam was Frozen Fire, winner of the IrishDerby, while Distant View=s contribution was SpeedGifted, a Group 1 winner over 1 5/8 miles in Australia.

Other stakes winners from this Montjeu/Mr.Prospector alliance include Pacifique, whose groupsuccess came over 1 7/8 miles; Jump For You, a listedwinner over a similar distance; and Biographer, a listedwinner over 1 3/4 miles. This underlines the scale of Camelot=s achievement inwinning the 2,000 Guineas over a mile, before he tookthe Derby much more impressively. Camelot, of course, followed Motivator, Authorized and St Nicholas Abbeyas Montjeu=s fourth winner of the Racing Post Trophy--a record which acts as a vivid reminder that the abilityto stay pretty well at three can still go hand in handwith first-rate 2-year-old ability. Leading Light is an even more pronounced example ofthe way Montjeu=s stamina tends to dominate. AidanO=Brien wasn=t afraid to try this 520,000gns purchaseover two miles in the G3 Queen=s Vase in June andLeading Light justified the gamble by staying onstrongly to record his fourth successive victory. It willbe interesting to see how he fares when hisconnections try to prove that he also possesses enoughspeed to be equally effective at around a mile and ahalf. Leading Light ought to be able to drop successfullydown the distance scale. He is, after all, out of DanceParade, whose first notable triumph came in the QueenMary S., Britain=s first major test for fast andprecocious juvenile fillies. Her speed was again evidentwhen she landed the G3 Fred Darling S. at three andalso when she was transferred across the Atlantic. Twoof her American graded stakes victories (all gained onturf) included two over 6 1/2 furlongs and the GII Buena Vista H. over a mile. Dance Parade started her broodmare career in theU.S. before being transferred back to England, whereshe realised 320,000gns at Tattersalls= 2005 DecemberSales. A previous visit to Montjeu resulted in WarwickAvenue, a fairly useful performer over a mile and aquarter. Leading Light=s second dam River Jig is alsothe second dam of Toylsome, whose finest win came inthe G1 Prix de la Foret over seven furlongs. Leading Light=s family traces back to Monarchy, asister to the remarkable Round Table, so there can beno complaints about the quality of his female line. With St Nicholas Abbey, Chicquita and Leading Lightall scoring at the highest level this year, there willsurely be no shortage of interest in the sizeable team ofMontjeu yearlings which will shortly be coming underthe hammer at Goffs and Tattersalls. They include coltsout of the classic winners Attraction and Finsceal Beo. I will also be keeping a close eye on some of theMontjeu 2-year-olds which have recently recorded theirfirst victories, such as Andre Fabre=s Gallante, winner ofa usually hot newcomers= race at Longchamp; andAidan O=Brien=s Carlo Bugatti. Perhaps it=s not justcoincidence that these two are out of grand-daughtersof Mr. Prospector, with Gallante having a dam byMachiavellian and Carlo Bugatti a Kingmambo mare.

Dear TDN Subscriber,

A small number of our subscribers have had trouble receiving our dailylink email from their service providers. We have found some interestinginformation that we'd like to pass on. The problem seems to be with anupdate to the network software on the Service Provider's side, and is notsomething that we can fix from our end.

Some subscribers have had success contacting their email serviceprovider or ISP and telling them about the problem. Some providershave been making users 'reset' their information, and that seems to fixthe issue. We also plan to make some significant changes to ourtemplate next week to see if that also helps to alleviate the problem.

We have an alternate way to send your link, so if you've called yourprovider, and they can't help, please let us know and we'll put you onthe list.

If you are having trouble contacting your provider, let us know and we'lltry to help figure out how.

Quick list for the most problematic providers:
