European Directive 2003/10/EC 15th February 2006 The above regulations require employers to provide suitable ear protection to employees that are working in noise levelsbetween 80dB and 85dB on request. If noise levels rise above this then ear protection must be worn. Regulation 8states that when not in use items should be stored in proper accommodation i.e. lockers etc. Regulation 9 states thatemployees must be fully trained in the use of any PPE equipment supplied. Noise can be unpleasant, sometimesdangerous and can cause permanent damage over a period of time so correct hearing protection is imperative.

Choosing the Right Hearing ProtectionAll products throughout this section have a Standard NoiseReduction (SNR) rating to help you choose the righthearing protection. First of all the working environmentnoise level must be established for you to then calculatewhich SNR rating you require.

Example:Working in an environment with a 100dB noise level requireshearing protection of 20dB - 25dB to bring the noise level into the safe zone of below 80dB.

Care must be taken not to over protect as thiscan also be hazardous in the work place - i.e. not being able to hear forklifts and verbalinstructions/warnings.

Selection of RespiratoryDisposable Products

There are three types of protectionstandards -P1: Lower or basic level - choice

with/without valve. P2: Intermediate - choice

with/without valve.P3: Highest level of protection -

available only with valve. Thevalve reduces heat and moisturebuild-up which improves comfortfor the wearer.

Common RespiratoryHazards

Dusts: Created when solid materials aretotally or partially reduced tosmaller particles, they are moreeasily inhaled the longer theystay in the atmosphere.

Fumes: These will generally be createdwhen materials/metals vaporisein high temperature conditionswhich then cool rapidly thuscondensing into very fine particles.

Gases: Which are airborne at roomtemperature and are able to moveabout rapidly into any spacewithin a short period of time.

Vapour: Are given off by materials thatare generally liquids or solids atnormal room temperature.

Terminology used inRespiratory Protection

W.E.L.: Workplace Exposure LimitsThese are two types -occupational exposure standardsor maximum exposure limits.

O.E.S.: Occupational ExposureStandardsThese are levels for a substancefor which the majority ofemployees may be exposed tofor an eight hour day, five days aweek. Exposure to a substanceassigned as O.E.S. can beexceeded, however steps needto have been identified to showexposure will be reduced.

M.E.L.: Maximum Exposure LimitsThese limits are generallyaccepted as the maximumexposure periods that peopleshould be exposed tosubstances which can result invery serious types of cancer,occupational asthma etc. Exactsafe levels of exposure cannotbe identified, and caution shouldbe used when exposed to thesesubstances.

The M.E.L. should never be exceededand exposure reduced to as low as is

reasonably practicable wheneverpossible

N.P.F.: Nominal ProtectionFactorThese protection factors areextracted from the performancedata categories of the EuropeanStandards to which allrespirators are tested. These should not be used toselect R.P.E.

A.P.F.: Assigned ProtectionFactorThese are deduced from manyworkplace protection factorstudies as laid out in the BritishStandard BS 4275.These should be used in productselection decisions.

“Protection at work”Eye & Face ProtectionThe wearing of eye and face protection in hazardous areas is a requirement under regulation 4 of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992. This regulation requires employers to provide suitablepersonal protective equipment to employees exposed to health and safety risks.

European Standards state that safety eyewear must be approved to BS EN166 (replaces BS2092). Safety eyewear mustbe marked to identify the protection offered, see chart below. It must offer eye protection from impact hazards caused byfast moving particles, from operations such as chipping, grinding and cutting, and from accidental airborne hazards suchas a grinding wheel failing or snapping a cutting tool. The potential impact speed must be assessed before selecting thestandard protection. If the hazard could dislodge safety glasses then goggles or a face shield should be selected. When chemical splash is a consideration unvented goggles must be selected to give full eye enclosure protection.

Ophthalmic Prescription Safety GlassesA full ophthalmic prescription service is available for safety spectacles.Obtain a prescription form from your local distributor. Fill in part 1. This may need to be completed by your companysafety officer. Take the form to your optician whowill carry out a vision test. Your optician will thenreturn the completed prescription form back tous.Your spectacles will be manufactured,usually within 14 days and sent to youroptician for fitting. The dispensing fee canbe settled separately or included into theinvoice from your local distributor. The final invoice will be sent to yourcompany, it will include the frame,lenses and, if applicable, dispensingfee, it will not include the test orany accessories - these arepayable directly to the optician.

The wearing of foot protection in hazardous areas is a requirement under regulation 4 of the Personal ProtectiveEquipment at Work Regulations 1992. This regulation requires employers to provide suitable personal protectiveequipment to employees exposed to health and safety risks. Feet need to be protected from hazards such as wet,electrostatic build-up, slipping, cuts and punctures, falling objects, metal and chemical splash and abrasion. Note: Footwear can have a variety of sole patterns and materials to prevent slips in different conditions, have oil orchemical resistant soles, and be anti-static, electrically conductive or insulating. There is a variety of styles including‘trainers’ and boots with ankle support.

Footwear Classification System - A Brief Guide
