Tufts Dental Reunion Weekend 2019

Dear Fellow Alumni,

The Tufts University Dental Alumni Association (TUDAA) Board of Directors and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations look forward to welcoming you back to campus for Reunion 2019, May 10–12, at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM).

Spring is a perfect time to visit Boston, to reminisce about our time as students, and to make new and lasting memories. Even if it’s not your reunion year, we encourage our alumni from across the globe to register for reunion activities and reconnect with classmates, faculty, and friends. This year’s reunion falls on Mother’s Day weekend. The Office of Development and Alumni Relations has put together some family-friendly activities to make this weekend special for all.

We have exciting educational and cultural activities planned, including two amazing continuing education courses: 3D Engineering in Dentofacial Rehabilitation, presented by our new chair of the Prosthodontics Department at TUSDM, Wael Att, D.D.S., Dr. Med. Dent. Habil, Ph.D.; and Esthetic Dental Implants: Advances in Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques, presented by 25th reunioner Marc L. Nevins, D.M.D., M.M.Sc., D94. Additionally, TUDAA will host a family picnic followed by a Red Sox game at historic Fenway Park on Friday evening. The weekend will close with a special emphasis on celebrating mothers at the Dean’s Farewell Brunch on Sunday morning at the Four Seasons Hotel Boston.

I am always so very proud of our dedicated and supportive alumni. Because of your generosity and commitment, TUSDM continues to be a global leader in dental medicine, education, and research. Help us keep up our tradition of having the best reunions! Plan to join us for a fantastic weekend—and don’t forget to support our alma mater through your reunion class gift.

More information will be forthcoming in the months ahead from your hard-working and dedicated reunion co-chairs. So please keep in touch.

Have a great year. I look forward to seeing you in May!

Richard Catrambone, D85, DG89, D19P President, Tufts University Dental Alumni Association

3D Engineering in Dentofacial RehabilitationWael Att, D.D.S., Dr. Med. Dent. Habil, Ph.D.4 Continuing Education CreditsCost: $99 Course description:The shift toward implementing digitally driven 3D engineering tools in reconstructive dentistry is obvious. The ultimate goal of digital technologies is to improve the quality and capabilities in examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the dental patient. It is still questionable, however, whether such digital tools lead to improved accuracy in data acquisition and assessment, better treatment planning, and a faster, more controlled manufacturing process. This exciting presentation will provide an overview of state-of-the-art 3D engineering in comprehensive dentofacial rehabilitation and discuss the different possibilities and advantages of using the digital approach versus a conventional one.

Course objectives:• Understand the different components of the digital workflow

in reconstructive dentistry• See how the combination of different digital technologies

can benefit the overall treatment• Discover the advantages and limitations of the digital

workflow in complex rehabilitations• Explore how future technologies will change the way we

practice

Speaker Dr. Wael Att is a professor and chair of the Department of Prosthodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He is also a professor of prosthodontics at the School of Dentistry at the University of Freiburg in Germany. Att is a board-certified prosthodontist from the German Society of Prosthodontics and Biomaterials (DGPro) since 2004 and an active member of multiple professional organizations, including the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED), International Academy of Digital Dental Medicine, International College of Prosthodontists, and Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics. He is president of the International Academy for Digital Dental Medicine (IADDM), past president of the Prosthodontics Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), and president of the Arabian Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (ARAED).

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Att earned a D.D.S. in 1997 from Tishreen University and received a Dr. Med. Dent. (2003) and a Ph.D. (2010)—as well as the title of extraordinary professor (2013)—from the University of Freiburg. He was a visiting assistant professor from 2005 to 2007 at the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, at the UCLA School of Dentistry, and the director of the postgraduate program in prosthodontics at Freiburg from 2007 to 2017. Att is a widely published and internationally respected clinician and lecturer. In teaching, research, and clinical practice, his focus has been on esthetic and implant dentistry as well as on implementing cutting-edge digital technologies in both reconstructive and multidisciplinary dentistry.

Saturday, May 11, 20198:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.

Esthetic Dental Implants: Advances in Minimally Invasive Surgical TechniquesMarc L. Nevins, D.M.D., M.M.Sc., D943 Continuing Education CreditsCost: $99

Course description: This presentation will provide a clinical update on minimally invasive approaches for esthetic implant site development. The use of recombinantly engineered platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) has accelerated the trend in which minimally invasive surgical procedures preserve and enhance the esthetic foundation for dental–implant-supported restorations. This program will present guidelines for incremental levels of flap elevation, from flapless to open procedures for implant site development. The use of growth factors has increased hard- and soft-tissue regeneration with less invasive techniques. This course will provide a decision matrix for how to manage extraction site defects, including whether to raise a flap and how to sequence soft-tissue grafting.

Course objectives:• Apply tissue engineering to clinical decision-making to

achieve optimal biologic and esthetic results in challenging dental implant cases

• Present techniques utilizing rhPDGF-BB for combined hard- and soft-tissue grafting

• Demonstrate how technology can ease the treatment process for patients and improve the predictability for biologic and esthetic longevity

Speaker Dr. Marc L. Nevins serves as editor in chief of the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a fellow of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Nevins is in a private practice for periodontics and implant dentistry in Boston, Massachusetts, and is assistant clinical professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity.

Nevins graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and received a certificate for graduate training in periodontology and a master of science in oral biology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Nevins has research interests in clinical applications of tissue engineering for regenerative periodontics and implant dentistry.
