The need for vessel operators to meet stricter environ-
mental regulations, while still maintaining a cost-effective
solution, is pushing the maritime industry towards using
cleaner energy sources. Rolls-Royce natural gas-powered
propulsion systems have proven to offer the optimum
route to both environmental compliance and cost-
effective solutions. Propulsion systems powered by natural
gas have lower fuel consumption than systems based on
conventional diesel and dual fuel engines. Rolls-Royce
lean burn gas engines not only reduce nOx emissions
by 90%, but also virtually eliminate emissions of SOx and
particulates.
Vessels, such as tugboats, will primarily operate within
close proximity to bunker stations so relatively small gas
tanks can be fitted. This leaves space inside the vessel for
large engines to deliver the required power for the vessel
to perform its duty.
Flexible gas-powered systems
Tugs that assist ships in a harbour typically have a varied
operating profile. They have powerful engines, and all the
push and pull the tug can exert is needed occasionally,
but there are also periods when the tug is idling, waiting
for the next order from the pilot on
the ship being moved, or for a ship to
approach the port. In addition, time
is spent in transit from the berth to
meet vessels or moored up between
jobs.
All this means that the search is on for the most
efficient way of delivering the right amount of power
for the various operating modes, without wasting fuel
and creating unnecessary emissions through idling large
engines for long periods. Rolls-Royce propulsion systems
for tugs are designed to achieve the best possible overall
propulsion performance, efficiency and manoeuvrability,
taking into account the loads and required response time
the vessel needs for the various operational modes.
Our flexible propulsion solutions are suitable for diverse
operating profiles, and can offer modules for multiple
drive modes such as the hybrid system, gas engine
and hybrid shaft generator. These are all designed to
be integrated collectively and to interface precisely for
optimum efficiency and operating economy.
rolls-royce invests extensively in research and development to be able to supply you with innovative, reliable and environmentally- friendly propulsion systems optimised for your operations.
powered by natural gas
For a short range vessel, such as a tug, smaller LnG tanks can be installed and orientated vertically to optimise space in the vessel. Drive from the gas engines can then be taken directly to azimuthing thrusters.
automation and controlAll gas system solutions are provided with the Rolls-Royce Acon vessel automation system. As well as handling all regular vessel automation tasks, Acon also deals with gas monitoring, control and alarms to ensure optimal and, most importantly, safe operation of the vessel.

lean burn gas engines
Compared to diesel engines that meet IMO Tier 2 emission
levels, Bergen lean burn gas engines give e2 weighted
emission reductions of 86% nOx, close to 30% in CO2 and
virtually eliminate SOx and particulates, already meeting
enforced and future IMO Tier 3 requirements.
• Lower fuel consumption than conventional diesel and
dual fuel engines
• Higher gas quality tolerance than dual fuel engines
• Approved by DnV for marine applications
• no dual fuel “switch over” problems
• Available for gas-mechanical and gas-electric application
• Optimum response at all engine load points (Variable

• Stable frequency
• no diesel processing equipment
• no waste oil
• Less maintenance
• Flat SFC/good low load performance
• Response time as of conventional diesel engine

Operational availability must be maintained today in the most cost-effective way. Variable market conditions and increasing competition should not undermine safe ship operation. Therefore, we work closely with our customers to support their fleets, ensuring they are operating safely and at maximum efficiency, with the goal of virtually eliminating unscheduleddowntime.
a comprehensive menu of service solutionsWe are proud of the performance of our systems, and are keen to ensure that they continue to operate at their peak throughout their lifetime. Our services now range from conventional product support, with no impact on ship availability, through to a range of equipment and systems support packages with levels of vessel performance and availability agreed, normally within a long-term risk and reward sharing partnership called MarineCare.
Single point of contactAs we have progressively increased the breadth of our product range, we have continued investing heavily in the facilities and the talent needed to support them. As multiproduct installations are becoming standard on a growing number of vessels, customers benefit from a single point of contact for support, which is usually the nearest Rolls-Royce regional centre to the vessel’s location.
reducing through life costsReducing operating costs and maximising availability is our objective. This has led us to work closer with a number of our customers in maintenance planning and recommending spares holding. By being involved from the start we have the opportunity to focus on the activities that make a difference, acquiring and pre-positioning service or exchange parts to ensure a smoother overhaul process, saving time spent in dock.
committed to meeting different needsAbove all, at the centre of our support philosophy, is recognition that all customers have different and often unique require-ments, based on their fleet operations. Whatever the mix of requirements, Rolls-Royce is committed to meeting or exceeding them.
product trainingAt Rolls-Royce we believe regular training ensures that you will get the most out of a vessel’s equipment and systems and also ensures that they are operated and maintained efficiently and safely. experienced and informed people are a key asset. As technology advances, so must the competence levels of operators and service personnel. We therefore offer a range of tailored training courses and programmes in state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest simulators and training aids.
Global service and support
our support teams, located in 28 countries, are committed to helping youmanage the vital balance between operational availability and cost. Whereveryour vessel is located, rolls-royce support is close at hand.
