Junior Achievement Ireland Enterprise Challenge Awards Ceremony 2009

The Louth Enterprise Challenge Project targeted 100 young people from four local Secondary Schools in Drogheda and Dundalk. This project immersed the students in a dynamic and innovative enterprise programme that will have helped them to set realistic goals and encouraged them to realise their full potential. This project was funded by Louth County Development Board and Louth Leader Partnership in collaboration with the RAPID Programme. The second phase of the project took place in Dundalk Institute of Technology. Stu-dents were given a guided tour of the college and gained an insight into campus life and the courses available in the college. The students completed activities and explored employment opportunities as they related to programmes on offer at DkIT. Students met staff from the Regional Development Centre with a focus on Enterprise and Innovation. Two representatives from the RDC delivered a workshop based on gen-erating ideas and encouraged the students to think about setting up their own compa-nies. One innovative student came up with a new toothbrush to include toothpaste in the brush itself! Eileen Lynch Access Officer at DKIT, delivered a presentation on programmes offered, student accommodation, as well as taking questions from the interested students. Ei-leen also informed students of the financial assistance available for progressing to third level where required. DkIT was delighted to be involved in this project and we hope to work with Junior Achievement Ireland, teachers and students in 2010.

“The DKIT visit was an incredible experience. Many of the students were over-awed by the amazing facilities, variety of people, courses and career paths that attending a college could bring to them. They were very excited and for many this was the first time the possibility of entering third level had crossed their minds. They began to see the connection between staying in school, doing their best, attending col-lege and the potential to earn very good salaries as highly skilled members of the labour force. They spoke about this experience many times after the visit and even discussed it with older students and parents.” Aisling Flood, Guidance Counsellor, St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Drogheda “ Even though we as teachers have visited DKIT the students haven’t had this op-portunity before, they have no concept of college yet, any influence from the out-side can make a big difference and to see cookery demonstrations and all the good courses and facilities on their doorstep really helps” Sandra Woods, Guidance Counsellor, O’Fiaich College, Dundalk. “I really feel today was a great benefit to students as this is previous to looking at their subject choices, I find that junior cycle career direction needs more support like this, we have to focus on senior students as guidance counsellors but to catch students this early really could hone their focus.” Dara Mee, Career Guidance Counsellor, St. Louis Secondary School Dundalk “I know what I want to do now, maybe because I’m a year older but more because this experience helped me think about it!” Student, St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Drogheda “Are all colleges like this? I’d definitely come here”! Student, St. Joseph’s secondary School, Drogheda.

Newstalk Final

One of the teams that took part in the newstalk final. Brendan Keenan, Roy Anderson and

Paul Quinn ( Kevin Reilly is absent from the photo)

StudentEnterprise@DkIT would like to congratulate all teams who took part in the Newstalk competition local final last week. Having made it through the first round of the competition the top four teams competed in the local final held last Thursday for a place in the national semi finals. The case study at that local final stage was based on the international wing of ESB. Each team prepared an in depth analysis of the case study and presented their findings to our three judges on the day who were Maeve McArdle a lecturer of business strategy, Paula Reilly a lecturer of communications and finally Garrett Duffy of the Regional Development Centre. The eventual winners of the competition were Kevin Edey, Ryan Carragher, Mindaugas Martinkus and Matthias Von Bargen. The team will now progress to the national semi final of the competition to be held in the National College of Ireland on January 31st. The team displayed not only business analytical skills and dynamic presentation skills they represented all strengths of a cross faculty team. We here at student enterprise would like to wish the team every success at the national level of the competition and look forward to seeing the team represent DKIT at national level.

Online 'webinar' series on Teaching and Learning

In the interest of disseminating best practice in Teaching and Learning, IT Sligo has de-

cided to publicly webcast its Teaching and Learning events where possible in the future.

As part of this, IT Sligo is launching a Teaching and Learning Webinar series from Janu-

ary 13th, where presentations from IT Sligo will be accessible as live interactive events

on the Internet. And there's more. Because the technology allows it, we will be also con-

nect to guest speakers from elsewhere in Ireland and abroad.

These webinars will take place weekly on Wednesdays between 1.15pm and 2pm and

the latest information on them will be posted on the "IT Sligo Teaching and Learning We-

binar Series" blog at: http://sligolearning.blogspot.com/. So get your sand-

wiches and munch your way through what we hope will be a series of stimulating and

useful presentations. Don't worry about having your mouth full as you will be able to sub-

mit your questions both during and after the presentations using the chat facility.

At this point we have 10 webinars lined up, but as it is an ongoing initiative we would en-

courage you to submit ideas to us on possible future topics and presenters.

To get access instructions, you will need to register for the presentations that you are in-

terested in. You'll find a link to the registration form on the blog.

Fionnuala Dullaghan and Berni Cassidy on behalf of the organising committee welcomed the TUI President, Don Ryan and TUI General Secretary, Peter McMenamin. Also welcomed were Michael Steward (International Officer) along with two Chinese guests, the retirees of course were especially welcomed. After the meal the speeches were kept brief! Don Ryan, the President, thanked the local branch members for welcoming him to Dundalk. He complimented the f if ty -six retired colleagues who between them had contributed more than a thousand years of ser-vice to Dundalk IT. They contributed much to the region and diversified into many disciplines responding to the social and economic needs. He reminded the gathering of the circulars 14/79 and 5/82. He thanked them for the loyalty to the TUI and for building up a strong local branch that always punched above its weight. In conclusion he wished all the retirees and their families well.

Funds Raised for Holy Land The recent sale of cribs and other olive wood items raised E865. I would like to thank everyone who made a purchase. The 2009/2010 All Ireland Intermediate Table Tennis Championships com-menced on Saturday 5th Dec. at U.C.D. sports complex in Dublin. The format of the championships, played over 2 weekends, is a Round Robin League in which the top ranking 6 teams compete for the overall championship. Dundalk DKIT started the day brightly with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Trinity College Dublin. In the second match against IT Tallagh Dundalk suf-fered their only defeat of the day losing 3-2. The remaining 3 games against IT Carlow, DBS and RSCI. Were won by 3-0. Star of the weekend for Dundalk was Darren Mc Mahon who recorded a great 10 wins from 10. Darren was well supported by Nagandra KC who lost only 2 games all day. At the end of the day Dundalk and Trinity were level on points but by virtue of the fact that Dundalk beat Trinity, Dundalk led the League heading into the second weekend on Sat. 13^th March 2010 with a good chance of retaining their All Ireland crown.
