Progress, growth, change, technology, conservation, preservation. Knowledge, respect, awareness, kindness. COMMUNITY. Many, many things are happening all around us, all the time, but without acommunity, individual efforts at any of these things is much less impactful. The old cliché, ‘the whole isgreater than the sum of its parts’, is sooooo valid, especially here in our little town of Tulameen! You folkscan pull together like no other!

2015, according to the Chinese zodiac, is the Year of the Sheep …. “I am a passive onlooker, I letbygones be bygones, goodness brings me fortune, I believe in the human race, I understand the meaningof giving, my cup is never empty, I am loyal and just and in others I trust, I AM THE SHEEP”.The first ever Winter Carnival in Tulameen that kicked off the New Year … and HATS OFF to theorganizers… was a HUGE success! Honestly, the objective was to create an event that focussed onCOMMUNITY, put on by the COMMUNITY, for the COMMUNITY, um.. ya Tulameen, you did it again …. Win-win … and win! Definitely doing that again, Tulameen!

Starting this year we have a giant undertaking brewing …. Its daunting, its exciting, and its HUGE. A newCommunity Hall. Mark Jones, our Treasurer, has started the ball rolling and already has a pile ofinformation and a bunch of good people working with him. Here’s the ASK… we need two things.. thefirst is for anyone who wants to be a part of the process to contact Mark to join the new hall committee, and secondly, we need to know (as will potential grant sources) that the desire to build a new hall is notthe vision of a few, but the consensus of Tulameen’s property owners. I know, I know, its 2015 and you’reall sheep, passive onlookers (see above -2015), but you do know the importance of contribution. Theeasiest and loudest thing you can do is JOIN THE COMMUNITY CLUB!! Embrace the 2015 Sheep. Send in your thoughts, your concerns, your questions, your membership application to ([email protected]) .. come to a Community Club meeting. See you there?

Tulameen Days is right around the corner and, as usual, is our LARGEST fundraiser of the year. This isthe one that keeps the lights on.. so we need your support! Decorate a cake for Friday night’s GreatTulameen Cake Off (perhaps win back your cake in Saturday’s Cake Walk), test your skill at the streetgames, sign up for horseshoes, have a beer in the beer garden with your Barbeque beef lunch, or comefor a pancake breakfast on Monday morning. Tulameen Days is the collaboration of many, manyvolunteers who help to make this weekend a success! You can volunteer or you can support.. or ofcourse, both! Don’t forget to visit the Tulameen Community Club booth on Saturday to sign up for yourmembership if you haven’t already done so!Baa-Bye for now …

A NEW HALLW E   N E E D   Y O U R   H E L P   &   V O I C E

Our Community Hall has been a gathering place allyear round for many decades. It’s seen better daysand we’ve outgrown it on many levels. Annual costsof operation and maintenance are ever increasingand at some point hard decisions will have to madeas to whether to continue to put good money afterbad, or to go out and build a new hall. Last year wespoke to Brad Hope, our then Area H RDOSRepresentative and broached the subject ofassisting in the funding if we got communityapproval for a new hall. Brad was able to commit$75,000 to us and this money has been placed in anRDOS trust account and earmarked for a new hall. We again broach this subject with our newly electedArea H RDOS Representative, Bob Coyne, and heis considering further monetary support, but we needyour emails of support in order to keep goingforward. Whether you visit, own, rent or camp in thisgreat community of Tulameen, you can help. You’veseen what happens in the “Little Town That Could!” The ice rink has never been more used by so manypeople since the roof went up. People like youmade this happen!

How Can You Help?

It is as easy as becoming a member of theTulameen Community Club. You don’t have to liveor own here to be a member. You can join us in building a new hall. It takes all the people who usethe ice rink, the public beach, hiking, mountain ordirt bike trails, geocaching or ride ATVs,snowmobiles or horses; even those who just getaway for vacation time with family and friends. Helpus with this amazing addition to our town. Yearlymemberships are $15 for an individual, $25 for acouple and $30 for a family.

Send us your letter of support , suggestions orcomments to: [email protected]. Without themajority of people supporting this endeavor we can’tget the funding going forward. Please join us inmaking this new hall a reality.

WINTER CARNIVAL

2014

5

Page 7: Tulameen Spring Summer

Our first Winter Carnival is behind us and we can call it an unqualified success. It was such a wonderful experience tosee the whole town involved in all of the activities! We are looking forward to next year's event! Here's a recap:

The Carnival ran from December 26th through January 1st and showcased the skills of the: Local Princeton /Tulameen Men’s Hockey Princeton Minor Hockey. Our new Area H Rep (Bob Coyne) dropped the puck in the game Princeton Posse Skills Competition Free figure skating lessons with Amanda McKenzie Human Bowling Exhibition Skate “Locals” hockey game

There was a strong showing for all of the events, but one of the the most well attended was definitely the Princeton Posseskills competition. The Princeton Posse put on a fun skills competition and showcased the skating prowess of theplayers. Near the end of the competition they broke out into some 3 on 3 play with their players and then included 3minor hockey players as well. A great event! Cooper’s Foods in Princeton very graciously donated 12 dozen hot dogsand buns so everyone could have a little something to eat after the event.

Human Bowling took a little bit of time to get off the ground, but once everything was fine tuned the kids (and a few adults)were flying down the ice. Thanks to Chris Wagner, Jason McKenzie, Don McKenzie, Mike Lachance, Ed Anderson andKeith Sanderson for manning the equipment in the arena and Linda Anderson assisted in getting the kids outfitted inhelmets outside the rink. Overall, a great time!

Wood for the fire pit over the course of the week was donated by Bruce Morphy and Bill Reichert. Thank you both verymuch for keeping the masses warm! Bill and Candace from the Trading Post need a very big thank you for helping sellthe majority of toques, coffee mugs and raffle tickets. No “ice event” is complete without the hard work of the personcleaning the ice. Keith Sanderson drove the Zamboni over the course of the Winter Carnival week almost 30 times andmade sure the ice was in great shape for all the events. Thank you to Jason McKenzie for designing our Winter CarnivalLogo and Amanda McKenzie for doing the legwork in getting our events lined up and giving free skating lessons.

Our Snowman Competition got off to a rocky start as the quality of the snow was less than ideal, but in the end we had 7entrants and were able to give everyone a little something for their time and effort. The entries were:

1st place: “Snowman City” built at the Kampf Cabin. This entry had 7 snowmen – playing hockey, “snowman” bowling, tobogganing, snowboarding etc.2nd place: “Booze Luge” built at the Hassell Cabin3rd place: “Sully Builds a Snowman” built at the Passey CabinHonorable mentions:“Snowmen Drinking at the Ice Bar” built at the Lachance Cabin“Lightup Snowman” built at the Northway Cabin“Bear in a Tree” built at the Lawrence Cabin “Miss Tulameen Pageant” built at the Mumford Cabin.

The Winter Carnival was a wonderful time for people of all ages, and was thoroghly enjoyed by all. Thank you toeveryone who participated! We look forward to next year's great event.

Until then, have a great spring, summer and fall!

On July 3, 2015 Glen Bergsmapassed away in an off roadingaccident at the age of 41. He leavesbehind the loves of his life, Amandaand their unborn daughter, as well ashis parents, siblings, cousins andextended family.

On December 26, 2014, BonnieCook passed away in her home inPrinceton surrounded by her family. She passed away after a very shortbut determined battle with pancreaticcancer. Bonnie and her husband,Dennis, have been longtime residentsof Tulameen.

On January 16, 2015, WayneWaddell passed away in Kelowna. Wayne (and Gerry) had beenlongtime residents in Tulameen.

Long time resident of Tulameen,Laverne Zandt also passed awayrecently. Our thoughts and prayersare with her family and friends.

Water ConservationAs the risk of fires increases due to the summer heat RDOS would liketo remind Naramata residents (and residents in all dry areas) of theimportance of water conservation during power failures that may becaused by extreme weather. If you experience a power outage in your area, please:

Turn off all outside irrigation immediately and reduce water useinside.

The Naramata water system pumps water directly out of OkanaganLake. (We, in Tulameen, pump our water from our own sources but thepremise is the same.) The system cannot replenish itself when thepower is out. Running out of water damages pipes and equipment andreduces the ability to fight fires. Once the storm has passed, power isrestored or fire is put out you can slowly start using water again.Thank you from the Regional District Public Works Department.

Fire Hall Door ReplacementBill Reichert donated a door to replace the one that was damagedrecently. We thank Bill as a community for his donation and would liketo point out that threatening the fire chief and fire department personnelis not acceptable and notice has been forwarded to the RCMP. Theeditor would like to add that we value our community and all themembers of if who volunteer their time to keep us safe.

As we have this wonderful new ice facility we are getting emails andcalls about renting the ice for private events (aka hockey games). Inorder to keep the rink open for everyone to skate at their leisure, wehave instituted a rental policy that we think will work for all concerned.

-Local interest rentals (minor hockey) open any time-Weekend private functions are mornings only

As our club is ‘solvent’ we don’t see the need to rent out the ice at allhours in order to generate money. The ability to go down to the rink andskate at almost any time is reserved for the locals.

At the Senior’s Lunch in Octobereveryone was served a selection ofsandwiches and homemade soup. We would like to thank the TulameenTrading Post for graciously donatingthe soup for this event.

Tulameen Marketplace was a huge hit this year! Over 15 vendorsgraced the ice rink floor from 9am to 1pm on May 16th for theannual event. Vendors ranged from 'garage sale' to baked goods, plants, jewelry, clothing and even a local trails representative to givemore information on the recent changes in laws for offroad vehicles.

If you have an event, we havethe hall. Hall rental includesthe use of the kitchen, tables, chairs and use of the bar. Formore information contactNadine McEwen at: (250) 295-6968 or email:[email protected].

Senior's LuncheonOnce again the Community Club hosted a luncheon for the areaseniors on May 14th. Vermilion Forks Elementary Schoolentertained everyone with some lovely music. The following is anexcerpt from a card received from Peggy Sutton, President of theRidgewood Lodge Resident Council:“Once again ladies you have outdone yourselves. We look forwardto this outing each year and thank you from the bottom of our heartsfor your kindness.”The ladies (and gentleman) who helped set up the event and servedon the day are: Judy Wallace, Judi Hassell, Mardi Hassell, BarbJones, Kathy Ellis, Georgina McEwen, Brenda Upton, Sara Fox,Trudy Kotzian, Kelly Reichert, Cheryl Maddalozzo, DebbeHargreaves, Frankie Reichert and Ken Reeve.

We are now starting to seesome benefits from the solarpanels that were installed onthe ice rink roof. In the billingperiod from February to Aprilwe generated 887 kilowatthours of power which netted us$81.28 in savings. On the Aprilto June bill we generated 2,095kilowatt hours of power whichnetted us $191.96 in savings. With the hot weather we’rehaving we can expect evenmore savings to come.

After a long battle, the Coalmont pay phone has finally been replaced. The new phone does not accept coins, but it does accept credit cards and calling cards. 911 is available and collect calls can also be made. The new telephone is more robust than the old one and is located on the Telus hut on Front Street about 200 feet east of the original location. There is a sign at the original location and additional signage should becoming shortly. Bob trimmed some branches which were blocking sightto the new pay phone so it is more visible now. We are very grateful to Telus for listening to us and coming to acompromise that should work for everyone. We also wish to thank AlexAtamanenko (Federal MP), Jackie Tegart (BC MLA), Bob Coyne (RDOSArea H Rep.), all of their staff, members of the public and the press whoinstilled in Telus the importance of this much-needed phone. They wereinstrumental in helping us arrive at this workable solution. Submitted by Diane Sterne

Cemetery ReportUpon noticing a downed tree onthe fence we took a trip up toassess the damage. It was only the tip of theiceberg! There were no lessthan six downed trees, pulledup by the roots from the icestorm last winter. We thoughtthat we would be picking awayat it all summer. We had to walkin from the road because theATVs and Snowmobiles hadcreated a berm across the road.Ed Reichert was kind enough togo up and fix the road, CherylMaddalozzo and Bob Hughescame up to help and by the endof the day all the downed treeswere gone. What a relief!Wayne Passey is fixing thefence and by the time you readthis, our little cemetery shouldbe back to normal.

Hi everyone! This summer will see the exciting final leg of the HudsonBay Brigade Trail make its way to Tulameen; camp five on the historicroute! We planned a work party on the Olivine section of the trail inJune. We cleared last winter’s blowdown and fixed some trail sectionsnear the Tulameen River. This section has ATV access so it was anasset to those carrying tools and accessing certain sections where itcrosses the old mining road. We camped overnight on site and thankthose also who came for the day. During the summer we will have acrew construct three new campsites along the trail. If anyone isinterested in coming out with them let me know and I can forward thesummer schedule. Thanks! Happy Trails, Kelley [email protected]

Due to the current condition of “high” fire danger rating in our regional area, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is implementing a TEMPORARY FIRE BAN.

This open burning ban is in effect to protect public safety and to limit the risk of person-caused wildfires. This ban does not restrict fires in cooking stoves using gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfireapparatus with a CSA or ULC rating (providing the flame height does not exceed 15 centimeters) but doesrestrict fires in portable wood burning fireplaces and campfires.

Anyone found in violation of an open fire ban, including campfires, may be issued a ticket for up to $345.00per incident. Anyone who causes a wildfire through arson or recklessness may also be fined up to $1million, spend up to three years in prison and be held accountable for associated firefighting costs. The RDOS thanks the public in advance for their cooperation in complying with this temporary fire ban.INFORMATION PROVIDED BY RDOS. The Tulameen & District Fire Department is comprised of 28 members covering both the Tulameen &Coalmont area. The Department provides fire suppression and responds to other related emergencies. This group of hard working & dedicated volunteers (from past to present) have formed the department towhat it is today.

The Tulameen Fire Hall’s Fundraising & Events would not be possible without our volunteers, but also thecommunity's support. Currently we collect and return recyclables throughout the year with the majority ofour events happening during the August Long Weekend. Our T-shirt sales and Open House is hosted onthe Saturday & the Duck Race is held on the Sunday of the long weekend. Along with these events, thisyear we will be holding our First Annual “Fire Fit” Challenge. It will be held at the Fire Hall on Saturday,August 1st from 10:00 am – 1:00pm. Sign up will start at 9:00 am and continue throughout the morning. This Challenge is designed for firefighters to simulate real life challenges in a course made up of 6 eventsthat will be timed from start to finish. There will also be an obstacle course for our younger “firefighters”…Come out & challenge yourself!

Our Dedicated Volunteers spend countless hours throughout the year training, attending weekly (Thurs@ 7:30) practices, classroom theory, learning new equipment, running through scenarios, becoming moreproficient in essential duties, maintaining the equipment, sacrificing personal time on the weekends totrain with the Princeton Fire Department, as well as attend out of district training in Kamloops whichprovided invaluable new skills & techniques to our team. The Hall is proud to announce that 3 of our FireFighters have completed training in Texas, as well as The Justice Institute of B.C. We also have a fewmore considering taking the same career path. This kind of dedication & knowledge will certainly be anasset to our community.

There is much time & effort spent behind closed doors to keep our Tulameen Fire Department operating. Thank you to our “Tulameen Community” for your devotion & continued support. A Special thank-you to our Fire Chief Jody Woodford.Your countless hours - your hard work & dedication along withyour continued support has been instrumental in our growth notonly as a department but in our future as career Firefighters!
