Desde muy temprana edad, Antonio Núñez Jimé-

nez comenzó a explorar su país para conocerlo

mejor y protegerlo. Siempre pensó que había que

motivar y mostrar a las autoridades los lugares in-

teresantes para el desarrollo del turismo.

Esa fue una de las razones por la que llevó a Fidel

Castro a varios sitios muy atractivos de Cuba, en-

tre ellos la Ciénaga de Zapata.

Al llegar al central Australia —cuenta Núñez Ji-

ménez— el auto se interna por la carretera que

atraviesa la Ciénaga de Zapata. Ya la región no

es tan ignota como cuando el ingeniero Juan

A. Cosculluela escribió su famoso libro Cuatro

años en la Ciénaga de Zapata, lleno de relatos

pintorescos, encuentros con cocodrilos y descu-

brimientos arqueológicos.

En un segundo viaje a la zona, Núñez Jiménez y Fi-

del visitan las playas. Surgen los centros turísticos

de Playa Girón, Playa Larga, Laguna del Tesoro y

sus modernas y hermosas instalaciones, moteles,

acueductos, aeropuertos, centros médicos, hos-

pitales y escuelas, y se trazan carreteras.

El otro recorrido que planifican juntos es por

el occidente; se dirigen al Valle de Viñales, que

Núñez Jiménez había explorado muchas veces.

At an early age, Antonio Núñez Jiménez began to

explore his country in order to get to know it bet-

ter and protect it. He’s always thought that au-

thorities needed to be motivated and shown in-

teresting places for the development of tourism.

That is one of the reasons why he took Fidel Cas-

tro to a number of attractive sites in Cuba, includ-

ing the Zapata Swamp.

Upon arrival at the Australia sugar mill—re-

counts Núñez Jiménez—the vehicle enters a

road crossing the Zapata Swamp. The region is

no longer as unknown as when engineer Juan A.

Cosculluela wrote his famous book Cuatro años

en la Ciénaga de Zapata (Four years in the Zapa-

ta Swamp), filled with colorful stories, crocodile

encounters and archeological findings.

In a second trip to the area, Núñez Jiménez and

Fidel went to the beaches. Tourist resorts sprung

up in Playa Girón, Playa Larga, Laguna del Tesoro

as well as their modern and beautiful facilities,

motels, aqueducts, airports, medical centers, hos-

pital and schools. Roads were laid out.

The other trip that they plan together is to the

West. They head to Viñales valley, which Núñez

Jiménez had explored many times over.

Los contactos con la familia campesina fueron muy importantes en este primer recorrido por la Ciénaga de Zapata. / Contacts with the farmer families were very important in this first tour to the Zapata Swamp.

De él, comentaría luego: De aquellas conversa-

ciones, surge el propósito del Gobierno Revolu-

cionario de construir en uno de los mogotes de

Viñales el Museo de la Prehistoria, donde habrían

de exhibirse ejemplares de los fósiles citados.

Como complemento se pintaría un gran mural

sobre un farallón del Valle de Las Dos Hermanas,

obra que pronto iniciaría el muralista Leovigildo

González, en el que quedaría plasmada la historia

geológica de Cuba, desde su nacimiento hasta la

época en que el Valle de Viñales fue ocupado por

nuestros apacibles indios.

El último lugar recorrido en esta provincia de Pi-

nar del Río fue la Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás,

que Núñez Jiménez había descubierto en la déca-

da del 50 y explorado en toda su extensión, casi

50 kilómetros de largo y un gran potencial para el

desarrollo turístico del país. Núñez Jiménez escri-

biría sobre ese viaje:

He would later say about it: From those talks, the

idea came up for the Revolutionary Government

to build the Prehistory Museum in one of the

outcrops in Viñales, where the specimens of the

above-mentioned fossils would be displayed. As

a complement, a large mural would be painted

on the wall of an outcrop in the Dos Hermanas

valley. The work was soon begun by muralist

Leovigildo González and it would represent Cu-

ba’s geological history from its beginning until

the Viñales valley was occupied by our peaceful

aboriginals.

The last stop in this tour around the Pinar del

Rio province was the Great Cave of Santo Tomas.

Núñez had discovered it in the 1950s and fully ex-

plored it, spreading a length of almost 50 kilom-

eters and with great potential for the tourist de-

velopment of the country. Núñez Jiménez would

write about this trip:

Iniciamos el recorrido de la Gran Caverna de San-

to Tomás. Andamos centenares de metros entre

las tinieblas de la caverna. Llegamos a un lugar

donde las paredes rocosas presentan las tallas

prehistóricas de enigmáticos símbolos, dibuja-

dos por tribus de tiempos precolombinos. Toda

la gruta es un formidable imán para el turismo.

Comenta Núñez Jiménez lo dicho por Fidel des-

pués de ese recorrido, que esboza el futuro del

turismo en Cuba:

El turismo, en esta etapa de 1959, debe ser una

de las más importantes fuentes de la riqueza na-

cional.

... (En) Oriente haremos las playas populares, los

hoteles, los moteles y los centros turísticos en la

Sierra Maestra; vamos a desarrollar la Cuenca de

Santiago de Cuba, la Laguna de Baconao, la Gran

Piedra, Puerto Boniato, los Pinares de Mayarí.

En la provincia de Camagüey, de inmediato, va-

mos a trabajar en la Playa de Santa Lucía y en Los

Cangilones del Río Máximo. En Las Villas, en la

Playa del Ancón junto a Trinidad; en los cayos del

Sur, en la región de Cienfuegos y en el Hanaba-

nilla. En Matanzas vamos a prestarle atención al

Valle del Yumurí y en La Habana continuaremos

creando numerosos centros turísticos. Pinar del

Río tendrá una gran importancia en este plan

nacional, con sus valles, sus aguas medicinales y

sus cavernas... Convertiremos el turismo en una

industria importante del país. •

We began the tour of the Great Cave of Santo

Tomas. We walked for hundreds of meters in

the darkness of the cave. We arrived at a place

where the rocky walls show prehistoric carvings

of enigmatic symbols, painted by pre-Columbian

tribes. The whole cave is a magnet for tourism.

Núñez Jiménez commented on what Fidel said

after this tour, outlining the future of tourism in

Cuba:

Tourism, in this period of 1959, should be one

of the most important sources for national

wealth.

… (In) the East we’ll open up the beaches, ho-

tels, motels and tourist centers in the Sierra

Maestra Mountains for the people; we’re going

to develop the Santiago de Cuba watershed, the

Baconao lagoon, the Gran Piedra, Puerto Bonia-

to and Pinares de Mayari.

In Camaguey province, we will immediately

set out to work on the Santa Lucia beach and

the Maximo River buckets. In Las Villas, in An-

con beach, next to Trinidad; in the southern

cays, in the Cienfuegos region and the Hanba-

nilla. In Matanzas we are going to focus on the

Yumury valley and in Havana we will continue

creating many tourist centers. Pinar del Rio

play a crucial role in this national plan due to

its valleys, medicinal waters and caves…. We

will turn tourism into an important industry

for the country. •
