Hey UCLA Circle K! Welcome to another exciting quarter! I hope all of you had a relaxing break. I know I did! I finally caught up with my sleep!

This winter quarter we’re going to have tons of new projects and events! We’re planning on making some fun changes to our general meetings. We’re going to fully integrate our themes. For example, we’re planning on having a talk show style meeting. Yup. That’s right! We’re going to have a meeting where I get to be your personal Oprah. We’ll be giving out more information and announcing the date at a general meeting soon!

Also this quarter, we’re going to have a couple of district events where you’ll get the op-portunity to meet with other Circle K members from other schools. Keep your heads up for those events during our general meetings or on our website.

So if you didn’t know, this will be my last quarter serving you all as President. The Circle K term is about to end and it’s time for elections! Elections will be on 5th week on Thursday, February 9. If you’re interested in running for a board position, please feel free to talk to me or any other board member for any questions.

For now, just keep your eyes open for more events and updates! Till then, see you soon!Have a happy quarter,Neil Yonzon

I pledge to uphold the objects of Circle K International,to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership,to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of mankind’s potential.

Happy 2012, everyone! Here’s your long overdue newsletter... Can you believe it’s the FOURTH issue already!? How time flies! I certainly hope you’ll enjoy this issue - I had a lot of fun crafting and designing it (despite having those awful moments of designer’s block!).

With Fall Quarter behind us and Winter Quarter just kicking in, you can imagine just how crazy it’s been in the last two months with all sorts of events going on! This issue of TurKey Break wraps all that up in a nice little package. I hope you’ll find it useful, especially with the spread on the committees! Additionally, you may find some articles a bit outdated, such as TurKey’s Take, but I hope you will look beyond it and find the true intentions behind the writers and what they wrote for you to read. Thank you to ALL writers and photographers for your input - This could not have happened without YOU! <3

As you may know, this is my second-to-last newsletter of this term as your Publications Editor. Crazy, huh!? It has been an honor releasing these newslet-ters, and though I haven’t been releasing them quite as consistently as I’d like, I do hope you’ve enjoy them. If you have any comments, suggestions, questions, and so on, feel free to contact me and let me know! I’m determined to make the last newsletter even more *~AMAZING~*!! So join in on the fun! I’ll be waiting! :)

A Field Day with Alexandria House

Trang Bui Third-YearUCLA Circle K Member

The Service Marathon, which consisted of more than 30 hours of service was packed with nonstop fun--and service--with events such as Friends with Animals, campus recycling and making meals for the homeless as well as many more events.

Service Marathon was marked by occasional spurts of sprinkling, raining, and even pouring which, while it did create slippery situa-tions (in more ways than one), proved to be a fun addition nonethe-less.

Everything started out with a visit to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital,

where volunteers helped patients create paper turkeys, color, and even have an impromptu origami project.

The marathon of service then progressed to other various projects one after the other, ending with the distribution of bagged meals—made during another service project in the middle of the night—to the homeless in the local Westwood area.

With the first service marathon of the year being a huge success, it can only be anticipated that the next service marathon will be packed with just as much nonstop fun!

Patrick Huie, Fourth-YearUCLA Circle K Member

In November, we went to check out Alex-andria House. No – it’s not a house owned by someone named Alexandria, it’s a house (actually TWO houses) located right beside Koreatown on Alexandria Avenue.

Alexandria House is a non-profit transition-al residence and neighborhood center that helps provide safe housing for women and children. It is also what UCLA Circle K’s large scale event Pillow Fight 2012 is fundraising toward.

When we arrived to Alexandria House, we

were greeted by Vivian, who gave us a quick orientation around the place. We were then greeted by the children of Alexandria House and introduced ourselves as the children had snack time. The children looked very excited to meet us as we went around in a circle tell-ing our names and our ages.

After this, we had a long time of recreation where we played sports like soccer and bas-ketball. I had a lot of fun! It was a great way for a college student to de-stress and see the children’s happy faces and hearing their

laughter. This reminded me of my days at el-ementary school where we would run around in recess.

After this, we had dinner, prepared by the lovely ladies of UCLA Circle K: TIffany Wu, Jamie Tran, Jen Zhang, Courtney Hernvall, and Jennifer Lai!

All in all, I had a really good time at Al-exandria House and it was good to see first-hand what we were fundraising toward. Go check out Alexandria House yourself when you have the chance!

On the night of December 3, 2011, UCLA Circle K members gathered in the lobby of Schoenberg Music Hall, eagerly waiting for the performance of the Holiday Choral Concert.

The performance featured a wide variety of songs, from a magnificent orchestra of horns and strings to choir. A widespread favorite of the night was the rendition of “T’was the Night Before Christmas”, in which the concert added in an endearing and nostalgic scene of Santa flying out of the chimney and placing presents in the children’s stockings. That led to an outstanding ovation by the end of the performance.

But why was this concert especially important to Circle K’ers? Because five of the club’s very own members were

part of the performers on-stage! Crystal Kumtong, Sarah Simko, Samantha Tran, Shin Yi Han, and Jarrad Lee all showcased their beautiful singing voices and gave an amazing performance.

Samantha Tran, first year, shared her thoughts as one of the performers, “Being up on stage made me excited to think that so many people wanted to just see me do what I loved. I had so much fun!”

The Circle K audience members surprised them at the end of the show with personal posters, all signed and written by the attendees. The night ended with a huge congratulatory group hug for them by everyone, and the audience left with the spirit of Christmas engraved in their hearts thanks to the beautiful music of the Holiday Choral Concert.

Members from UCLA Circle K got a chance to sing their hearts out to favorite Christmas songs while caroling to fundraise for one of our district fundraising initiatives, Not For Sale, on December 16.

The club decided to take advantage of the Christmas season and carol at a neigh-borhood known as Candy Cane Lane in South Torrance.

Members went door-to-door singing classic Christmas songs like Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.

Many members enjoyed the event and even got a surprise from children from the neighborhood.

“Christmas caroling was so much fun! Some of the children [from the neighbor-hood] were so enthusiastic that they decid-

ed to join us or dance for us while we car-oled,” Kiwanis Family co-chair and junior Brian Kan said.

On top of singing, members educated households about Not For Sale and its mis-sion to spread awareness and prevent hu-man trafficking and slavery.

At the end of the night, UCLA Circle K fundraised over $120 for Not For Sale.

“Even though I decided to attend Go West at the last minute, I do not regret it at all. ”

Go West 2011 was an amazing event! It was my first time being there this year, and every minute was filled with laughter and unforgettable memories. I thought it incorporated service along with socials flawlessly. I particularly enjoyed broomballing! It was exciting being on the ice with a hockey stick and other CKI’ers. Even though half the time I didn’t know what was going on in the game, I screamed with excitement and chased after the ball every time it rolled towards me. Despite falling countless times during the activity, I enjoyed every single minute of the game.

Decorating rose floats wasn’t as bad as I imagined from previous Key Club experiences. The weather was extremely nice, and my group actually had hands on decorating experience with the clock on the Honda float! It was so cool; I never imagined myself directly gluing flowers on the float itself and I was afraid of messing up. By the time the lunch break came around, my group had finished decorating the clock! Our hands and clothes were covered in glue, but we took so many pictures of our hard work for everyone else to admire. Unfortunately, the clock wasn’t featured on TV during the parade so I didn’t get a chance to enjoy the float in its entirety.

Lastly, another feature of Go West that I loved was the AMAZING RACE! I still can’t believe they made us race through the streets of Old Town Pasadena to find the Melting Pot, train station, P.F. Chang and Blicks, but the adventure was worthwhile! Through heavy breathing and sore legs, I manage to enjoy the busy nightlife of the town and the company of my teammates. Needless to say, my team finished the scavenger hunt first and was able to head back to the church where we stayed at to rest.

Although I left the event a day early, I felt like I enjoyed the event to the fullest. I made some new friends while playing Monopoly Deal (a lot of Monopoly Deal) and Taboo, as well as developed minor body aches from sleeping on the floor and running all over the city. Overall, this event brings nothing but good memories and laughs for me. Even though I decided to attend Go West at the last minute, I do not regret it at all. I highly encourage everyone who can to attend this event next year because you get the chance of a lifetime. (:

On December 17, 2011, 4 members of UCLA Circle K went out to Albertsons in Culver City to help the Culver City Kiwanians with their “Sitting with Santa” fundraiser. All proceeds from their concession stand in the store went a home for women who were victims of domestic violence and abuse. The Culver City Kiwanians were also hosting a Toy Drive at the same time.

The UCLA Circle K members helped run the food stand by selling hotdogs, chili dogs, soda and water, and cookies and coffee. They also spread the holiday cheer to all patrons of Albertsons by singing along to holiday songs on the

intercom and wishing every passerby a Merry Christmas. The employees at the store were also very willing to support the Culver City Kiwanians through their donations.

Boyscouts who were fundraising outside of Albertsons were drawn into the store with the prospect of meeting Santa. However, some of them seemed a little camera-shy. Even adults that passed by were offered candy and a picture with Santa. Although most declined and went about their business, we no doubt brought a smile to their faces. Although the dreary weather outside may have lowered event attendance, any event around this time of the year is successful as long as we bring about some holiday cheer.

Sitting with Santa Claus

On November 19, over 50 members of UCLA CKI came together for day of fun at Sunset Rec. Visitors from Cal State Northridge and Cal State Long Beach also made an appearance at this social event, centered around UCLA CKI’s families—Philosoraptors, T-Rawrs, Dinomite Diplodocuses, Bobasaurs, Stunning Stegos, and Triple Triumphant Triceratops (T Cubed).

After eating quite the assortment of sandwiches made by each of the families, the activities began with general icebreakers—“I love my neighbor” and “Never have I ever.” Soon after, everyone broke into groups. Thee were alll asked to act out a scene from a famous movie. Brave violinists died valiantly as their ship crashed into an iceberg. Rose (male), unfortunately, let go of Jack (also male).

Meanwhile, Simba was lifted up from high above—the top of the bleachers. While one group’s soundtrack was a very off-tune

and poorly synchronized humming of “My Heart Will Go On,” the other opted for a simpler solution—a stereo.

In the next activity, each person extended their hands to another across from them, and the game of untying the Human Knot began. One group, in a meager effort to untangle itself, collapsed as a whole within the first few minutes. Deciding it best not to try again, they spent their time telling jokes, inappropriate anti-jokes, and playing Zoo.

Another group, unfortunately, was tangled in a jumbled mess of a knot. Undeterred by arms twisted at awkward angles and awkward positions in general, this group spent over an hour attempting to escape this prison of body parts. After this hour, these strangers were strangers no more, but rather, friends under strange circumstances.

At the end of this picnic, people and families became closer than a human knot could make them. Sometimes, a day of fun is necessary in a week filled of stress.

for the membersTurKey’s Take:The Act of Giving

The winter holiday season is here! And if you are anything like me, you’re more than excited for the festive fun that comes with the month of December (snow at FTC, anybody?). Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or none, there’s just something in the air that screams FUN and CELEBRATION. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I don’t need a reason to celebrate and party. Who does? Enjoy the company of family and friends, eat your TurKey heart out, and fill the room with laughter.

What I love most about the holiday season is the act of giving. There is no other greater joy than being able to give and CKI loves contributing to the community and helping others, perfect for me! And what’s best is that giving doesn’t have to entail giving a physical present, it could be giving your time, giving blessings, or giving a simple smile. For a little turtle-monkey like me, I love the warm, fuzzy feeling I get every time I give a gift. I’d give a tail and a shell just to see somebody’s face light up with joy. Knowing that somebody appreciates what I have to offer makes me the happiest animal in the world. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way; you members also share the same passion for giving and helping others.

To give my two happy-sad cents on the holiday season, I’ll put it in these two words: Be Selfless. We are all naturally selfish and live by our selfishness day after day (horrible, I know). The holiday season is the perfect time (minus Thanksgiving) to throw away the selfishness and express your gratitude to the people you love and care about, to acquaintances who may turn into future friends, to strangers who may return the favor one day. And being the overachieving turtle-monkey that I am, why stop here? Try to be selfless everyday, only good will come out of it.

But most importantly, don’t lose sight of giving your time to service. You may be swamped with your studies and scrambling around with a busy schedule, but don’t fret. Take some time off and wind down with a fulfilling service event. You’ll remember why you joined Circle K and why you love service and giving.

TurKey’s Take is a monthly editorial column focusing on differentaspects of CKI. Look forward to next month’s rant from TurKey!

Some of the clubs’ promotional videos were also showcased including UNLV’s outstanding presentation, and UCLA’s funny “FAIL” video. Saturday night, a Fashion show was held so that each club could show off their club T-shirt. The final winner of CKI North and CKI South was also determined by way of an intense game of musical chairs (So-Cal won, YAY!). The night ended with a ceremony to induct the new members, a “Ceremony of Lights” to remind us all that we are part of one big Kiwanis family, and a dance.

Tech Chair Rich Ung, was a win, as it was able to come away with honorable mention! Our awesome Dino-themed shirts, designed by Diane (“Big Money” XD) Santos (and modeled by Dylan Sarnowski), also won third place! Great job, everybody! What made the weekend even more special was the weather (Snow!). Random snowball fights made FTC just that much more memorable. As both a school and a part of Metro Division, we cheered our hearts out , met tons of new people, and made FTC unforgettable!

To everyone who couldn’t make it out this year, it was a truly wonderful experience, and we hope to see you all there next year!
