İSTANBUL, WHERE THE UNIVERSITY IS LOCATED“There, God and man, nature and art have createdtogether an extraordinary place that is definitely worthseeing” says the French poet Lamartine in his attemptto define Istanbul. Istanbul as the only city situated ontwo continents in world is known as the "capitol ofcapitols". It ruled continents first as the capitol of theRoman Empire, then as the capitol of the Eastern RomanEmpire (Byzantium) creating immense geographies ofpeace. Istanbul which became the capitol of theOttoman Empire in later years proudly carries thesplendor of its past while at the same time marchestowards modernity with firm steps in our day. Thediversity she offers has always fascinated the visitors ofIstanbul. The 1990's and into the 2000's the significanttraces of change that were left on Istanbul can besummarized as the mark that global economics andglobal politics have stamped on the city. Istanbul is aglobal site that has always been open to influences ofdifferent environments, has been enriched by suchinfluences and has been flexible enough to export theaccumulation that she has accumulated and reproduced. The characteristics that provide Istanbul its status as acultural World City rests in this intense intra-culturaldialogue rooted in its past.
