History > Turkish Society for Horticultural Science (TSHS)Ayşe Gül
The Turkish Society for Horticultural Science
(TSHS) was founded in 1992 with the aim
of facilitating cooperation and knowledge
transfer in horticultural science among uni-
versities, research institutes, extension ser-
vices and the private sector in Turkey. The
Society also aims to link Turkish horticulture
with world horticulture. It represents Tur-
key at ISHS Council meetings and has been
the official body for Turkey since 1998. ISHS
Council members of Turkey are elected and
proposed by TSHS. TSHS headquarters are
located in İzmir province of Turkey and it
is registered as a national non-profit civil
society organization. It has three branch
offices in Yalova, Ankara and Şanlıurfa prov-
inces. The Society has both regular and hon-
orary memberships. Currently, the number
of members is 668 and membership is still
rapidly increasing. Regular membership is
open to all Turkish citizens interested in hor-
ticulture as researchers, lecturers, extension
specialists or industrial professionals. Honor-
ary membership is open to both Turkish and
non-Turkish citizens, who are well-known
among horticulturists throughout the world.
Honorary members can participate in regu-
lar, extraordinary, and scientific meetings.
Although they have the right to speak and
offer opinions, they do not have the right to
vote or be elected onto boards. The Board of
TSHS (Table 1) is elected by members at the
TSHS general assembly held every two years
and the duties are shared among the elected
Board members.
Recent activities – congresses and symposia
National congresses and symposia
The TSHS is the umbrella organization that
promotes horticultural science through coor-
dinating scientific meetings and network-
ing. TSHS was established in 1992 during
the First National Horticultural Congress in
Turkey. Since then, this Congress has been
organized under the auspices of TSHS by dif-
ferent universities, in collaboration mainly
with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and
Livestock (MFAL), every four years (Table 2).
The last National Horticultural Congress was
held in Çanakkale between 25 and 29 August,
2015. Prof. Roderick A. Drew, President of the
International Society for Horticultural Science
(ISHS), participated and made an address at
the opening session of the Congress. It was
a great honour for TSHS to host him in Tur-
key. His presence at the Congress helped to
acquaint Turkish horticulturists, particularly
the younger generation, with the ISHS. This
Congress was organized by Çanakkale 18 Mart

University, in collaboration with TSHS and
MFAL, to commemorate the 100th anniversary
of the Gallipoli Campaign (battle of Çanakkale
during World War I) and hosted the largest
number of registered participants (800) at a
national horticultural congress to date. The
next Congress will be organized by Uludağ
University in Bursa in 2020.
In addition to the National Horticultural Con-
gress, held at 4-yearly intervals (except the
second) and focused on all topics related
to horticulture, our members often gather
at national symposia focusing on specific
themes or crops. Two symposia, the Sympo-
sium on Vegetable Production and the Sym-
posium on Postharvest Handling and Storage
of Horticultural Crops, are organized regu-
larly under the auspices of TSHS (Tables 3
and 4). These national meetings also feature
very rich social programs; participants have
the opportunity to see natural and archae-
ological attractions within the country and
enjoy being together. These meetings also
allow close interaction among horticultur-
ists, whether from state institutions such as
universities or national research institutes,
or from the private sector, on major prob-
lems and potential research topics.
ISHS congresses and symposia in Turkey
TSHS has always had a keen interest in unit-
ing Turkish horticulturists and connecting
them with the world. In this respect, special
attention has been given to ISHS member-
ship, and 32 international symposia have
been organized in Turkey under the auspices
of ISHS since the 1990s (Figure 1 and Table
5). In 2016, four ISHS symposia will be held
in Turkey, and three of these symposia will
be held in Antalya concurrently with EXPO
2016 Garden because of the international
horticultural boom in the city. In addition,
TSHS wished to host an ISHS International
Horticultural Congress (IHC) and began bid-
ding to hold IHC in 2002. As a result of these
efforts, the Turkish Society will be hosting
the 30th International Horticultural Congress
in Turkey on 12-16 August 2018 (Table 6).
IHC2018 will be hosted by TSHS and MFAL in
İstanbul, which is among the most popular
meeting destinations in the world. The Con-
gress will be held in the İstanbul Congress Cen-
