The Turkish Yoke

The Turkish Yoke was a period from the late 14th

to late 19th century, during which Bulgarian country did not exist . Bulgarian-populated lands were under the

Ottoman rule.

Bulgarian population in the Ottoman

Empire.

These were the worst centuries ever for the

Bulgarian people because of the

everyday attacks, many taxes, murders,

violence against women and girls and abduction of young

boys.

The man who does not keep in his/her heart the memory of the sufferings of his/her people, does not treasure his/her people and country.

At the time of the Turkish yoke there

were about 30 different taxes. Among

them the tax on firewood, wine tax, tax on hay, the tax on pigs that were fattened for Christmas and many

more.

During the Turkish yoke many Bulgarian revolutionaries

organized uprisings to liberate Bulgaria from the Turkish

oppression.

The Uprising of Konstantin and Fruzhin

The Uprising of Konstantin and

Fruzhin broke out in 1408. It is believed

that it was suppressed in 1413.

The First Tarnovo Uprising broke out in 1598 near Tarnovo. The uprising

was the first organized act of Bulgarian resistance during the

Ottoman rule, after the final conquest of the Bulgarian lands.

The Second Tarnovo Uprising

The Second Tarnovo Uprising was a Bulgarian revolt against the Ottoman rule in 1686 led by the boyar Rostislav Stratimirovich from Veliko

Tarnovo.
