FISH BITES The Marlins continue this four-game road swing to Atlanta with game two tonight at 7:35 p.m. Jose Fernandez gets the start for Miami, going up against the Braves for the fifth time in his career. In four previous starts against Atlanta, he is 3-1 with a 0.93 ERA (29.0/3). The Braves are sending out Julio Teheran, who in 10 starts against the Fish is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA (63.2/18). Miami went 2-7 on its recent 10-game homestand versus Washington (1-2), San Diego (1-2) and the Mets (0-3). Following this weekend set in Atlanta, Miami will return home for two games against the Boston Red Sox following an off-day on Monday, then hit the road again after an off-day Thursday to St. Louis (Aug. 14-16) and Milwaukee (Aug. 17-19). TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS The Marlins placed RHPs Jose Ureña (left knee contusion) and Andre Rienzo (left knee laceration, retro to Aug. 4) on the 15-day disabled list; the Club also recalled RHP Kendry Flores from Triple-A New Orleans and selected the contract of RHP Kyle Barraclough (#46) from Double-A Jacksonville. LAST NIGHT In game one of this series, Miami worked back from two three-run deficits, but fell to the Atlanta Braves, 9-8. Miami took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, but Atlanta equaled the score after one and had a 5-2 lead after two. The Marlins scored two in the third and one in the fifth to knot the score at 5-5, but the Braves rallied for three in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-5 lead. The Fish wouldn’t be held back and scored three in the eighth to tie the game again, but couldn’t keep Atlanta from scoring the deciding run in the bottom of the frame. Christian Yelich led the offense, going 3x5 with two RBI. Dee Gordon went 2x5 with two RBI, Ichiro notched two hits in three trips, Derek Dietrich connected for his seventh home run of the season and Martin Prado drove in three runs. Jose Ureña started for Miami, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk (intentional) over 2.0 innings. Bryan Morris (3-3) was handed the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth. VS. THE BRAVES The Braves lead the season series, 8-2, but both of Miami’s wins have come at Turner Field, where the Club went 2-1 from April 13-15. Since snapping a three-game losing streak here on September 1, 2013, the Marlins have gone 8-7 in Atlanta. The Braves lead the all-time series, 216-152, and have a 116-68 lead in Atlanta (99-60 at Turner Field). TALE OF TWO JOSE’S Over his career, Jose Fernandez has fashioned a 20-8 record and 2.23 ERA in 42 starts. He has been spectacular at home, going a perfect 15-0 with a 1.14 ERA (157.2/20) in 24 starts, yet in 18 road assignments, he has gone just 5-8 with a 3.87 ERA (104.2/45). When at Marlins Park, he is averaging 5.48 hits and 2.40 walks per nine innings, while on the road his numbers are 6.96 and 3.27, respectively. One thing that does not vary much, however, is his strikeout/9 rate, which is 10.45 at home and 10.40 on the road; the last time he pitched here in Atlanta, on April 22, 2014, Fernandez tied his career high for strikeouts, with 14 (also, August 2, 2013 vs. Cleveland). THE HUMAN MAGNET Derek Dietrich went 1x3 with his seventh home run of the season last night, but also was hit by a pitch for the eighth time this season. He is getting hit an average of once every 16 plate appearances, which is the highest average in the National League (min. 100 PA). Anthony Rizzo ranks second, averaging one HBP every 21.23 PA (22 HBP/467 PA), followed by Jung Ho Kong at 24.85 (13/323). - STATS LLC ROAD FIELD ADVANTAGE According to Stats LLC, the road team in this series is 8-2 (.800) this season, marking the second-best road-team record in a series in 2015, behind an 11-2 (.846) mark for the road squad in the Arizona-San Francisco season series. The third- best mark is 8-3 (.727) in the Yankees-Boston series, followed by 7-3 (.700) marks for Cubs-Milwaukee and Cincinnati- Milwaukee. FLASH JR LIGHTING UP THE EAST Dee Gordon has been hitting National League East teams at a .394 (61x155) clip this season. It is the second-highest season average against the East (min. 100 AB) since 2005 behind Randy Winn’s .402 mark in 2008. Gordon is batting .357 (15x42) in 10 games against the Braves this season, recording at-least one hit in each of those 10 games. He is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak against Atlanta, batting .392 (20x51) with eight runs scored, a double and nine RBI. It is his longest career hitting streak against an opponent. - STATS LLC NEW FISH, FRESH FINS In six games this month, Miami’s bullpen has used three rookies, with two making their Major League debuts, and one reliever appearing in the Majors for the first time since April 6, 2013. Left-handers Adam Conley, Chris Reed and Chris Narveson, and right-hander Brian Ellington, have a combined nine appearances with no record and a 2.79 ERA (19.1 ip/6 er) since August 1. The rest of the bullpen in that time has gone 1-2 with a 12.38 ERA (8.0/11). YELICH REBOUND CONTINUES Christian Yelich continues to rebound from a slow start to the season, which included a 16-game stint on the disabled list in April and May due to lower back tight- ness. Since June 27, Yelich, who was 3x5 last night, is batting .341 (43x126) with a .415 on-base percentage. His average in that time ranks fifth in the National League, while his OBP ranks sixth. His average leads all NL outfielders, and his OBP is second behind Bryce Harper (.452). Also, his 43 hits since that date are tied with Charlie Blackmon (43) for most among NL outfielders. MONTHLY AWARDS Today, C/1B Brad Haynal of the Batavia Muckdogs and RHP Chris Paddack of the Gulf Coast Marlins were named the Marlins’ Minor League Player & Pitcher of the Month for July. Haynal batted .358 (34x95) over 26 games with 11 doubles, one home run, and 18 RBI. He posted a .411 on base percentage and .505 slugging per- centage. Haynal, the Marlins’ 18 th round selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of San Diego State University, currently ranks second in doubles (13) and eighth in average (.312) in the New York-Penn League. Paddack went 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA in five games (three starts) in July for the GCL Marlins. Over 20.0 innings pitched, he held opponents to a .192 average while striking out 15 and walking only three. Paddack, the Marlins’ eighth-round selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Cedar Park HS (TX), pitched in 12 games during his senior season, going 11-0 with a 0.46 ERA.
