RACE GUIDE

Page 2: Turning Stone Races

The people of the Oneida Indian Nation are proud to welcome you to our ancestral lands and to Turning Stone Resort • Casino for the Turning Stone Races.

The Oneida people have always emphasized the importance of hospitality and welcoming our guests into the home. It is this cultural training that infl uences all our operations, including those at Turning Stone.

Our dedication to the area, combined with the hard work of our employees, make us a top tourist attraction in New York. Just recently The Lodge, The Tower, and Wildfl owers restaurant, all earned the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Awards. Turning Stone also offers award-winning golf experiences and spa treatments, and the best in fi ne dining and top-notch entertainment.

This event allows us to introduce more people to the beauty that is Central New York. This region, located at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, is marked by stunning scenery, rich historical sites, and vibrant cultural attractions; and it is all framed within four seasons. Turning Stone is located within driving distance from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, the Finger Lakes Wineries, and the Bouckville Antiques community.

We are excited to be hosting this event for the fi rst time. We look forward to greeting you with our traditional words of welcome (“Shekóli”) and warmly welcoming you to our beautiful ancestral lands, and to our fabulous Resort.

N7 ki’ wa,

Ray HalbritterOneida Indian Nation Representativeand CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises

FOR MOMTom Tucci, Syracuse, NY

Tom will attempt to run 13.1 miles for the first time in honor of his mother who recently died at age 86 from her 35 year battle with Rheumatoid arthritis. “She sat in a wheel chair most her life, 2 replacement knees and 2 hips and she still could barely walk. She never complained, not once!! Totally inspiring how she could internalize the pain and make it come out happy... She would have given the world to run a race.So this race is for Rosie,” said Tom.

FOR OUR LOVED ONESCatherine Richard, Liverpool, NYCatherine will run the Turning Stone Half Marathon to honor her sister and brother-in-law who are both currently deployed in Afghanistan. Race day marks her sister’s 3 year wedding an-niversary and Catherine wants to honor her “biggest support-ers” anniversary by running in the half marathon. Catherine frequently receives emails from her sister encouraging her to continue running and training for the TS Half. “Every few days I receive an email from her that says ‘are you still running?’ She keeps me motivated halfway around the world,” said Catherine.

FOR MY PARENTSPaul Hartnett, Syracuse, NY

He will run in memory of his father who passed away last year and in honor of his mother who currently suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Paul will be running to honor all those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

THE ROOT FARMAndrea Piazza, New Hartford, NY

Just five years ago, Piazza was stricken with an illness that left her unable to walk. However a year ago she began using Equine-assisted therapy and she looks forward to running in the 5k race to raise money and promote awareness for The Root Farm.

WEIGHT LOSS FINALISTSusan BrillaShe has lost 101lbs through the Weight Watchers diet and through running. In 2011, she was featured not only as one of Weight Watchers success stories, but was also 100 people selected to appear on the Oprah Winfrey’s Weight Loss Finalist Show.

IN MEMORYKim Wilder, Whitesboro, NY

Kim is running her first half marathon in memory of her moth-er who passed away due to heart disease in 2003. Since then, she has become an avid runner as a result of her willingness to live a newer, healthier lifestyle. Kim is not only running for her late mother, but also two of her friends who recently passed away earlier this year.

STILL GOING STRONGAnthony G. LotempioAnthony Lotempio is approaching his 70th birthday. He has completed 92 half marathons in his 35 years of competitive rac-ing. The wear and tear on his body has taken its toll. He is now a competitive race-walker. The Turning Stone Half Marathon will be his 93rd half marathon overall. He hopes to race in 100 in his lifetime.
