Sea Turtles

Page 2: Turtles

The life cycle starts when a female turtle lays her eggs on a nesting beach, usually in the tropics. Six weeks to two mouths, a tiny hatchling makes its way to the surface of the sand and heads to the water, while dodging predators like large birds and other large things. When they get into the water , they swim around until they get back to the coastal waters( this may take as long as a decade, this is named as the lost years).

After the lost years they have grown approximately the size of a dinner plate. When they have returned to the coast they continue to mature, while they explore over larger areas of ocean. As a sub-adults and adults, sea turtles are more easily studied. After another 10-15 years they have reached sexual maturity.

Once they have reached sexual maturity they will make there way slowly to nesting areas to breed. Only the females will come a shore to lay her eggs in the sand, mostly where they were born. Most turtles will breed multiple times during nesting season, 2-4 years over the course of there life time. It is unknown how long they live but scientists think they can live for as long as a century.

The diet really depends on the specie of sea

turtle. Some eat omnivores, eating a variety of plants and animal, but others like the Hawksbill and Leatherback only eat sponges (Hawksbill) and jelly fish (leatherback). What they eat really determents on where they live and go, for example Hawksbills are mainly found on and around on coral reefs that is why they prey on sponges.

What Turtles EatParagraph 1

There becks are shaped on what type of food they eat. Like Leatherbacks they have sharp, pointed cusps on their lower and higher jaw which enables them to pierce and hold on to the jellyfish. As for the Loggerheads strong, massive jaws which enable them to crush and eat conchs and whelks and for the Greens sea turtle they have a beck that has finely serrated edges, like a teeth of a saw, which enables them to tear at the sea grasses and scrap algae off hard surfaces. Sea turtles eat depends on what type of turtle they are.
