Dear Graduates of 2019:

The Tuskegee National Alumni Association (TNAA) Executive Board congratulates you on your joyous achievement! Graduating from college is a major life accomplishment and whether you are an undergraduate, graduate or professional student, you should be proud. It is even more exciting if you see this as a step toward great successes in the years ahead. You are laying the foundation for a better life for you and your family and for others you encounter. The entire Tuskegee University community joins me in celebrating your new beginning.

Your journey to this point may have seemed daunting as you coped with rigorous course loads, dealt with financial challenges or faced other worries that sometimes put your graduation in doubt. Through it all, you remained faithful to your goal—a symbol of your determination and the value you place on your Tuskegee education. The entire family of our great University honors your achievement.

Today, I welcome you to a prestigious group of over 31,000 men and women, “The Alumni of Tuskegee University”. These extraordinary alumni have entered the world with a sense of purpose in pursuit of careers, professions and education. You face a tough marketplace and inevitable obstacles, but you are prepared to lead with excellence. We have every confidence that just as you have overcome numerous hurdles to be where you are now, you will make your way through the challenges of the day. In keeping with the traditions of Tuskegee, we expect no less from you.

As Tuskegee graduates, we encourage you to volunteer your time, talents, and financial support in making “Mother Tuskegee” a better place for those graduating behind you. Our founder Booker T. Washington once said, “if you want to lift yourself up; then lift someone else up”. That is why we give back to Tuskegee.

By joining us in the National Alumni Association, you will help ensure the future of Tuskegee University for years to come. This alumni Directory is meant to help you get connected to our organization. Please use it.

Welcome to the family, and feel free to contact me anytime.Sincerely

Tuskegee National Alumni Association (TNAA)

History

When the first class of thirty students graduated from Tuskegee Normal School in 1885, Mr. B. Town Harvey, valedictorian of the class, called them together and they organized the Tuskegee Alumni Association, making him President. For the next ten years this alumni body met principally on special occasions at the University, added the new graduates to its membership roster and made financial contributions to the Alma Mater.

In 1905, Ms. Mamie Abercrombie called together her classmates and schoolmates who lived in Montgomery, Alabama and organized the first off-campus Tuskegee Alumni Club. In 1910, the second off-campus Tuskegee Club was organized in Chicago and the trend continued until there were eighty (80) plus of these Clubs and six (6) Professional Associations throughout the United States.

In 1916, Mr. Jesse O. Thomas, class of 1911, initiated the movement that led to the organization of the Tuskegee General Alumni Association, which met annually and convened every third year at the University. This body was strengthened and in 1938, when Mr. Ernest L. Dimitry, class of 1916, led a movement that organized the first Region to coordinate local club developments in the Northeastern part of the Country. In 1964, the organization was formalized as the Tuskegee National Alumni Association (TNAA) at the 7th Triennial Convention in Cleveland, Ohio with Mr. Daniel W. Andrews, class of 1922, presiding as the Association’s first National President.

Subsequent Presidents have been: Dr. Edward W. Brice ‘38, Dr. Grady W. Taylor 38’, Mr. George E. Haynes, Jr. ‘42, Dr. Lafayette Frederick ‘43, Mrs. Arilla Della McZeal ‘45, Mr. Forrest P. Wiley ‘59, Dr. Anne O. Emery ‘47, Mr. Joe C. Thomas ‘58, Dr. Norman“Shot” Jackson‘55, Mr. Solomon L. Banks, Jr. 64, Ms. Lillie A. Lanier‘71’, Kimberly L. Woodard,‘94’, Walter Wortham ‘71 and‘73, and Burt Rowe‘70 is the current President.

Mr. Alvin J. Neely (1939-1952), Mr. John Henry Smith (1952-1957), and Mr. James W. Woodson (1959-1982) administered the Association’s programs while serving as Executive Director. Mr. John H. Paler, Mr. Robert S. Darnaby, Dr. Alphonse Heninberg, Mr. Alvin J. Neely, Mr. John Henry Smith, and Mr. James W. Woodson also coordinated alumni activities for Tuskegee University as alumni officers of the school.

Mrs. Fannye J. Harris served as Alumni Director and Executive Director of the National Alumni Association from 1976- 1982, Mrs. Cynthia C. Henderson served from 1983-1989, Mrs. Catherine C. Minor served from 1989-1994, Mrs. Annie R. Ware then served from 1995-1996 and Mr. Frank Lee served as Alumni Director and Executive Director from 1996-1999. Mr. Willie M. Burnett served as Director of Alumni Affairs and TNAA Executive Director from 1999-2012. Ms. Kimberly Woodard served as Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs from 2012-2014 and currently serves as TNAA Executive Director. Dr. E. LaShaun Seay, also served as Interim Coordinator for Alumni Affairs from 2014-2015. Kymberly Holland has served as Coordinator of Alumni Affairs and Reunion Programs from 2015 to present.
