Tuthill offers the HD series of product forthe most demanding applications. The HDseries is capable of handling multiplepumping challenges that may includepresence of solids, and large viscosity andtemperature ranges in one application.HD pumps can offer system builders andOEM’s an attractive alternative to pro-gressing cavity pumps and air-operateddiaphragm pumps. HD pumps will toler-ate intermittent run dry, are relativelycompact, will pump liquids with viscosi-ties that range from thin to very thick, willhandle temperatures up 525ºF, and areenergy efficient. Standard pump construc-tion is in ductile iron or 316 stainless steel.

Tuthill’s robust M Series magnetic coupled internal gear pumps are designedto withstand the unexpected. They usegenerously sized high temperature samarium cobalt magnets and are lesslikely to decouple when exposed to processupsets and cold starts. The M-series magnetically coupled pumps will toleratesome decoupling and run dry.

The Inside Reliability Story Behind GLOBALGEAR®

The Pump designed for you!

Tuthill’s GlobalGear® was developed based on customer input, and customer input in

the process industries clearly points to the need for better gear pump reliability and

specifically better seal reliability. The opportunity for better reliability is created by the

situation that many pumps applied on viscous liquids are fundamentally designed for

packing and later adapted to mechanical seals. In many cases, the seals being selected

were designed for use with water-like liquids. Pumps designed for packing combined

with mechanical seals designed for thin liquids are no match to offer extended

reliability with demanding viscous liquid applications.

GlobalGear®design features for extended seal life include:

• Oversized shaft and bearing diameters in sizes 120 thru 550

• Large bore size for stuffing boxes

• Pressurized fluid paths for seal lubrication

• Options for viscous liquid duty seals

GlobalGear® Pumps are TOUGHER AND MORE RELIABLE.

PATENTED LUBRICATION FEATURERevolutionary lubrication methodextends overall life byreducing friction.

Introducing the HG VERSION GLOBALGEAR®, for the toughest of tough services.

THE CHALLENGE…Provide a pump that will:

• Handle side loads of belt drive and allow for the sheave to be mounted directly on the pump input shaft• Handle thrust loads associated with high system pressure• Handle cold starts where the temperature drops to minus 20°F • Withstand operation in a high vibration environment• Design for five year life with only scheduled preventative maintenance lubrication

Tuthill answers with the HG set of severe services upgrades:

• Interference fit, paired single row bearings capable of 80,000 hours B-10 life• Heavy duty hard face slurry type seals• Extra shaft length to accommodate belt sheave• Cartridge style drive module for bearing and seal renewal in minutes by a non-specialized crew

Developing new energy sources from bio-

fuels, coal, and waste products presents

special pumping challenges. Some of the

applications where HD pumps have been

applied include:

1. Biodiesel – Soybean soap stock

2. Ethanol – Spent mash

3. Coal water and coal oil slurries

4. Energy Recovery –

Waste oil burner feed

Tuthill HD Pumps are used in many diverse markets for challenging applications.

Below is a partial list of markets and applications served:

Tuthill offers the HD Series

for the most demanding

applications – slurries,

high viscosity products,

suspended solids, concen-

trated acids, chemicals,

high temperature liquids,

sludge, resins, sewage

and scum, paints,

polymers, plastics, pharma-

ceuticals, foods, and shear

sensitive fluids.

CIRCUMFERENTIAL PISTON PUMPS

A CLASSIC DESIGN WITH LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE

The secret behind the HD’s success is external bearing support on both sides of the

impellers which enables the pump to handle high pressure, and pressure spikes

associated with sudden surges of viscous mass. The load diagrams below show the

rigid HD design compared to cantilevered designs with shaft deflections that can

result in galling and seizing of the pump.

External timing gears in separate oil filled reservoir

provide safe, non-contact synchronous impeller action.

Oil lubricated roller bearings provide support for maximum radial

loading in models 70A, 120A, 330 and 600.

Constant diameter shafts (no steps in torque transmission areas) for

maximum strength and minimum deflection.

Housing bushing, positioned under maximum radial load, assuring

minimum shaft deflection.

A selection of sealing solutions is offered including Tuffseall,

heavy duty mechanical seals, and packing.

Impellers provided in single lobe or double lobe design.

No metal to metal contact in the fluid chamber.

Housing and gear case are foot mounted to minimize

distortion and vibration.

Heavy duty, grease lubricated, double-row ball bearings for

combined radial loading and axial positioning.

Casings and gear case are precision machined and dowel pin

aligned. Procedure results in full interchangeability should field

replacement be required.

DOUBLE LOBE IMPELLERS

SINGLE LOBEIMPELLERSSingle lobe impellers provide maximum strength for highly viscous fluidsand slurries, and high discharge pressure as wellas minimal shear charac-teristics on the fluids.

EXTERNAL TIMING GEARSUse of timing gears eliminates metal to metal contact in the fluidchamber, reduces shear, and allows intermittent run dry without damage to the pump.

Applications

Difficult to seal liquids such as:Isocyanate, Styrene, Sodium Hydroxide

Hazardous liquids such as:Nitrocellulose

Liquids carrying toxic vapors,solvents, etc.

Suitable for working environments where no leakage can be tolerated

Tuthill’s M Series magnetic coupled pumps feature a robust design to better withstand the unexpected.

Process upsets and cold starts can result in decoupling and permanent magnet damage that results in costly repairs and unplanned downtime. Using generously sized high temperature magnets can often prevent this situation. That is what Tuthill delivers in the M series magnetically coupled sealless process pumps. With more robust components andsuperior engineering, these pumps are much less likely todecouple in upset, cold or high viscosity situations. Even in the event of decoupling or run dry, our high temperature magnets are more likely to survive than standard low temp-erature magnets found in other pumps. Invest in a betterpump to avoid those costly magnetic drive pump repairs.
