Tutorial Macrame bands By Stefan. Back to Tutorials.
This tutorial is supposed to teach you how to make macrame bands in
different styles. They can be used as bracelets, belts, or just for
decoration. Under each image I will indicate what knot you need to make the band.

Square knots. Hitches.
Double Hitches. Hitches.

You'll need yarn in three colours; here I've used black, yellow and red.
You'll need 3 yellow, 6 red and 1 black. They should be at least 120cm of
length and folded on the middle so they are 60 cm when you start tying.
Start to put up some threads using the black thread, lark heads, as the
picture below show. Observe that you need to do this on the middle of
every thread. Also observe the order of colours.
Make two square knots in the middle of the red thread groups.
Make double half-hitches of the yellow pairs of threads. No difference in
witch direction.
Keep on making double half-hitches until the yellow threads meet again
(the outer yellow threads will meet the black ones).
Make square knots of the red groups again.
Make some reversed half-hitches with the outer black threads on both
sides.
Continue with the yellow ones until they meet again. Make square knots of the red thread groups as before. Then make reversed half-hitches with
the black threads again.
Tie two double half-hitches of the outer red thread pairs. Then tie
reversed half-hitched of the black threads. As you'll see, this should be made every second knot. Now you should be able to continue by yourself.
Tie red square knots, double half-hitches of the yellow and reversed of
the black.
Finish the book mark by making a row of black half-hitches, moving
towars the middle with the outer black threads. Stop when they meet.
Tutorial Finishing a macrame
work
To pick a method of finishing a macrame work can often be difficult. Of
course, you could just leave the macrame work as it is when it feels like it
is done, but sometimes it looks nicer to make something special at the end. Sometimes you also need to fasten the strings somewhere so they
loosen your knots and ruin the rest of your work. Here are some of the
techniques I often use.
Overhand knot
With this simple knot, most macramé works can be finished in a decorative and durable way.
Bunch the strings together
Bunch the threads together using square knots. Make a square knot out
of the three or four knots in the middle of the "bunch" of strings, then take the six inner knots, then 8 etc. You will get a col effect out of this.
Simple finishing with square
knots
Finishing off with a normal square knot can look nice. If the strings are
stiff, the outer strings will be in the outward direction.
Bunch together with square
knots
[p]This is not much difference from the previous example, but here we
have less stiff strings - and more of them. It is just one black square knot
on top of many other strings.
Half-hitch spiral end
I made this ring by tying square knots on a metal ring. When I reached
around, there were some threads left. I decided to make a simple half-hitch spiral out of them.
Finishing with double half-
hitches
The work can be ended in fringes. A row of double half-hitches can make
the strings go out the same direction, giving a nice looking effect.
