Tutoring Adults: A Resource to Improve Vocational Life Research Question The women I worked with at the Fresno County Library sought to improve their grammar skills in order to improve their vocational lives. My research question aims at the responses employers have in aiding their employees in this improvement: What programs do employers provide their staff to further their skills and education? Purpose of the program: The purpose of this service at large is to help improve adult literacy in many forms. While my aim was to help people improve their comprehension of grammar, the literacy program helps adults with legal documentation, resume construction, and family engagement with reading. I learned to organize my sessions based on a learner centered approach. Sessions: Weekly 2 hour tutoring sessions for 1 month Setting goals and reporting progress Total of 12.5 hours completed Findings: There seemed to be very little support for these women from their existing employers. They instead, were referred to the Fresno County Library in order to improve their skills. While researching, I found there are actually many programs offered by a variety of employers. These programs take the form of financial assistance, direct training, or acquiring skills to develop within the workplace. Reflection & Conclusions The Fresno County Library’s Literacy Center ultimately gives people opportunities to improve their grasp on different literacies. From children to adults, the center engages people in ways to continue learning by creating positive environments for them to learn. The community is benefitted as more children learn the importance of reading and develop a sense of responsibility. Adults are able to grow and not belittle their own abilities to develop.
