CHECK-IN
Winter Magic in Bavaria There's only one cable car like this in the whole world. Every hour, it can take up to 600 passengers to the top of the Zugspitze, Germany's tallest peak towering at 2,962 meters. Check-in presenter Nicole Frölich tests the stunning new ride up the mountain and takes in the breathtaking landscape: Skiing, counting the peaks and soaking up the sunshine – against the backdrop of the Bavarian Alps. When the weather's clear, visitors to the Zugspitze can see more than 400 Alpine peaks. The DW travel magazine team begins its tour in GarmischPartenkirchen, which hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics. On the ski slopes of the picturesque Alpine town, ski jumpers from all over the world battle for points in the Four Hills Tournament.

EUROMAXX
New Year Concert It's probably the most harmonious way to usher in the New Year: The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs the New Year concert with works by the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries. Tickets are so in demand that a lottery takes place a year in advance to determine who can buy them. Some 50 million people in more than 90 countries tune in every year to watch the live television broadcast. This year, for the fifth time, the New Year concert will be conducted by Italy's Riccardo Muti. He maintains close links with the Vienna Philharmonic, after more than 500 appearances together. Euromaxx shows how the conductor and the orchestra prepare for the important concert, and presents highlights from the performance itself.

KICK OFF! LIFE
Borussia Dortmund Borussia Dortmund, a local hero with global appeal. The black and yellow colors of the Ruhr Valley football club have long reached beyond the borders of Germany and Europe. The club surged onto the international arena in the nineties, before charismatic manager Jürgen Klopp (2008–2015) effectively turned his team into a world brand. From Asia to Latin America – Dortmund the real thing, or, as they say “Echte Liebe.”

White Waves Surfers surrounded by tampons, condoms and toilet paper: The documentary White Waves looks at surfers who are fighting the pollution of the oceans. The authors join the surfers to identify largely unnoticed cases of marine pollution. Even surfing itself can even be a threat to the ocean. Material such as surfboards and wetsuits can pollute the environment; flights to surfing locations lead to higher CO2 emissions, which adversely affect the climate; and some surfers leave rubbish behind on the beaches. A stunning documentary with an important message.

ARTS.21
A New Chopin “Only crazy people and geniuses dare to tackle Chopin.” A view apparently held by contemporaries of the Polish composer. His works are viewed as highly sophisticated and technically ambitious. The pianist Daniil Trifonov has stepped up to this huge challenge. The young Russian prodigy has already won numerous prizes and international admiration. Together with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, he has recorded both piano concertos by Frédéric Chopin – in a new orchestration by the conductor Mikhail Pletnev. Arts.21 watched the rehearsals and the acclaimed concert in Dortmund. What forces are still unleashed by Chopin's music? And how does a young pianist like this manage to express the nuances between the notes? Answers in this twopart documentary broadcast by DW's arts and culture magazine.

IN GOOD SHAPE
Taking on the Superbugs They're everywhere – on door handles, medical equipment, food trays and mobile phones –
and they can survive for weeks: Germs. In hospitals, they pose a threat to patients with weakened immune systems, particularly those in intensive care. This is dangerous, as any infection can result in death. Nursing staff spread germs, but they are also brought in by patients and visitors. It's a known fact that the healthiest person hosts millions of bacteria. Even if people regularly wash their hands, patients can still be infected. In many cases, antibiotics and even reserve antibiotics are rendered ineffective because the medication is prescribed too frequently, incorrectly and for too long. In Good Shape explains how antibiotic resistances occur and visits a major hospital in Berlin. There, doctors and nurses describe how they try to protect patients from the multiresistant germs.

Since January 2017, however, Trump has been President of the United States. The documentary Unfair Game – How Trump Won analyzes the role played by money and the media in the last US election.
