ARTS.21

A New Chopin “Only crazy people and geniuses dare to tackle Chopin.” A view apparently held by contemporaries of the Polish composer. His works are viewed as highly sophisticated and technically ambitious. The pianist Daniil Trifonov has stepped up to this huge challenge. The young Russian prodigy has already won numerous prizes and international admiration. Together with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, he has recorded both piano concertos by Frédéric Chopin – in a new orchestration by the conductor Mikhail Pletnev. Arts.21 watched the rehearsals and the acclaimed concert in Dortmund. What forces are still unleashed by Chopin's music? And how does a young pianist like this manage to express the nuances between the notes? Answers in this twopart documentary broadcast by DW's arts and culture magazine.

IN GOOD SHAPE

Taking on the Superbugs They're everywhere – on door handles, medical equipment, food trays and mobile phones –

and they can survive for weeks: Germs. In hospitals, they pose a threat to patients with weakened immune systems, particularly those in intensive care. This is dangerous, as any infection can result in death. Nursing staff spread germs, but they are also brought in by patients and visitors. It's a known fact that the healthiest person hosts millions of bacteria. Even if people regularly wash their hands, patients can still be infected. In many cases, antibiotics and even reserve antibiotics are rendered ineffective because the medication is prescribed too frequently, incorrectly and for too long. In Good Shape explains how antibiotic resistances occur and visits a major hospital in Berlin. There, doctors and nurses describe how they try to protect patients from the multiresistant germs.

Since January 2017, however, Trump has been President of the United States. The documentary Unfair Game – How Trump Won analyzes the role played by money and the media in the last US election.

De Gaulle and Adenauer  On 22 January 1963, Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer signed the Élysée Treaty in Paris. In doing so, they put the relationship between France and West Germany onto a completely new footing. From then on, the old hatred, rivalry and suspicion were to be replaced by trust, cooperation and cultural exchange. The documentary shows how de Gaulle and Adenauer succeeded in reconciling their nations through their own personal rapprochement.
