How is YourFood Hygiene?

Most likely you’ve heard of the importance of proper ‘sleep hygiene’,

or behaviors relating to sleep…but have you ever considered your ‘food hygiene’? I use the term food hygiene to refer to the behaviors relating to eating. I’m not alluding to the usual “close your mouth when you chew” lectures that we all heard as kids. Rather, I’m referring to our rules of engagement with food: such as how quickly we eat, how thoroughly we chew our food, and what we do (or don’t do) while eating.

Becoming more aware of our food hygiene can be revolutionary to our relationship with food. In our frenetic-paced society, we tend to multitask when it comes to eating: we check email, we watch TV, we talk on the phone, we drive. In short, we tend to do everything BUT truly pay attention to our FOOD! As a busy mom, I have struggled with food hygiene myself. I’ve eaten breakfast while packing school lunches, I’ve munched in the car on the way to play dates, I’ve had entire meals without sitting down once. But I’ve begun to notice that the more mindful I am of my food hygiene, the more satisfied I am by what I eat. Hence, I tend to eat less without feeling hungry or deprived.

Paying attention to our eating habits and behaviors can be key to staying at a healthy weight. Why? Because our brains seem to do much better at registering fullness when we pay attention to what we consume. Chock it up to being physically and psychologically ‘present’ for our meals. So what can you do to improve your food hygiene?

1. Log everything you put in your body: EVERYTHING! This includes the samples at Costco and that little bite of your kids’ mac n’ cheese. Keeping a food log or journal is a powerful way to become more aware of what you are eating & perhaps even why you are eating it. It doesn’t have to be a laborious process, but the more detailed you are, the more insight you may gain. Pay special attention to patterns that you notice: such as times of the day that you struggle with, or situations in which you find it difficult to make good choices.

2. Experiment with the following habits:

3 Sit down to eat.

3 Eat without ANY distraction (aside from other people).

3 Enjoy the eating process by focusing on & savoring each bite.

3 Chew slowly & set down your utensil between bites.

3 Stop eating when you start to feel satisfied.

Whether you want to lose some weight, improve your health, or model healthy eating habits for your children, try cleaning up your food hygiene. I believe that you will find it to be a powerful tool in bringing about healthy changes.
