• The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in

developing countries –TWAS, a global science academy based in

Trieste, Italy.

What is TWAS?

• Founded in 1983 by Nobel Laureate “Mohammad Abdus Salam”

(Physics, 1979).

• Mission: Promote scientific excellence and scientific capacity in

developing countries, for science-based sustainable development.

TWAS-ARO Regional Prize Aim: recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to one of four

areas, among which the prize rotates each year:

1. Public Understanding and Popularization of Science.

2. Science Diplomacy.

3. The Development of Scientific Educational Materials.

4. Building Scientific institutions.

• The prize holds a financial contribution (USD 3,000)

Eligibility Criteria:

Scientists working and living in a developing country for at least 10 years.

Nominations can be accepted only from Members of TWAS-ARO, Science

Academies, National Research Councils, Universities and Scientific Institutions

from the Arab region. (Online nomination form).

N.B: Self nominations are not allowed.

TWAS Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize • Reward the scientific work carried out by individual young scientists who live and

work in Arab countries.

• YAS prize has different themes decided yearly.

• Prize holds a financial contribution (USD 3,000)

• Eligibility Criteria:

1. Holds the nationality of an Arab country.

2. Be living and working in an Arab country.

3. Holds a PhD degree.

4. Have a proven track record in his/her field.

5. Under 40 years by nomination date

6. Nominations can be accepted only from Members of TWAS-ARO, Science Academies,

National Research Councils, Universities & Scientific Institutions from the Arab region.

TWAS-ARO Young Affiliates • Annually, each of the five TWAS Regional Offices selects up to 5 scientists under

the age of 40 years to be 'TWAS Young Affiliates' for a period of five years.

• TWAS-ARO Young Affiliates should be:

1. Less than 40 years by nomination date

2. Native of an Arab country

3. Has at least 10 international publications in peer-reviewed journals

4. Residing and working in a developing country for at least the past 3 years.

5. Nominations can be accepted only from Members of TWAS-ARO, Science

Academies, National Research Councils, Universities and Scientific Institutions

from the Arab region. (Online nomination form)

N.B: Self nominations are not allowed.
