Ricken re-instated the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass until further notice because of the recent markedly high rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. Please note that Mass will continue to be celebrated every Sunday at all of the Diocese’s churches for those who are able to attend and willing to strictly follow the proper health protocols.
“I also want to point out that there is great medicinal value in the Eucharist and the Sunday gathering for Holy Mass. The Eucharist itself has tremendous healing properties since it is the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and being together to Worship God at Mass every Sunday, even in modest numbers, greatly strengthens our faith. Let us pray mighti-ly for the end of the scourge of this pandemic and for the protection of each one of us, our loved ones, and all of our brothers and sisters in Christ and in the human family. Dear Fellow Pilgrims,
Mr. Oelrich went to the board
and began tallying the votes.
He had written and underlined
the names of three candidates
to represent our class on the
student council. My name sat
in the middle between Shirley and Mitch. This, I thought, would be a slam dunk. Clearly, I believed, I was the best candidate. He read the first vote–Steve, and tallied a mark under my name. Then the second
vote–another tally. Democracy was working. Then
there was a vote for Mitch. And another. And anoth-er. Suddenly, I had fallen behind. Of the thirty stu-dents in our class, Shirley ended up with four votes, I
got nine, and Mitch won in a landslide with seventeen.
In my twelve-year-old mind, this was an outrage!
Later that evening, I was lamenting in a dark pre-teen
funk. It was the most devastating setback to that point in my life. “Tell me about this Mitch guy,” my dad said.
“The girls like him because he has dimples and smiles
a lot. It was a popularity contest.”
“Maybe,” Dad said. “Most elections are popularity
contests. And it’s easy to like someone who smiles a lot. Is he your friend?”
“Well, yeah, sort of,” I said. “I mean, we’re friends,
sure. He’s not one of my close friends, but Mitch is friends with everyone.” Then it hit me. Mitch was genuinely a nice guy who people liked being around.
He was always happy and openly shared that
happiness with others.
Life was so simple when I was in the sixth grade. All
the layers of complexity we’ve added on top of life
since then merely obscure, but cannot change, this foundational truth: people simply want to be happy. Pure and simple.
As we spiritually mature and grow, we discover that
happiness is inherent. It is planted within us to
cultivate, grow, and share openly with others the way
Mitch did. Unfortunately, we seem all too willing to
outsource our happiness, to think and believe that we
could be happy if other people would only conform
to our way of thinking, our way of being. We then
expend so much of our mental and emotional energy
thinking about, worrying about, and trying to combat
and correct everyone else. And we never find the
happiness we seek.
The spiritually mature person never outsources
happiness. He or she gives power only to the voice of
Spirit within, and never to the distracting and often
dysfunctional voices and noises swirling in the storms
around us.
This Covidian Dystopia is indeed an emotionally
challenging time in our lives. But it’s also a spiritual
pilgrimage back to our center. The happiness we seek
is already planted within us. Now, perhaps more than
ever before in our lives, we are called to journey back
to that center, embrace our own happiness, and share
it generously with the world around us.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate, each according to his position and role, in promoting the common
good. This obligation is inherent in the dignity of the human person. . . . As far as possible, citizens should take an active part in public life” (Catechism of the Catholic
Church nos. 1913-1915). According to the document Form-ing Consciences for Faithful Citizenship A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States, “… participation in political life is a moral obliga-tion,” (FCFC 13), but that participation requires “a well-formed conscience,” (FCFC 17). This document contains information on political responsibility and guidance in the exercise of our rights and duties as participants in our de-mocracy. It is an on-going lifelong process, and one that each Catholic voter should take seriously. The protection of life and the dignity of the human person are foundational and without this, all other treatments of the human person become relative and circumstantial. Mass intentions are most commonly offered for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. It’s a special way to remember them. However, Mass intentions can also be offered for a birthday,
anniversary, special need, or a cause such as for an end to abortion, for anyone suffering from addiction, the unem-ployed, for peace in our country or world, for our country’s leaders, etc. The intention can be for anyone—in other words the person doesn’t have to be Catholic. Often the person requesting the intention attends that particular Mass, however, that’s not required or necessary. If the person does attend, they are welcome to bring up the gifts of bread and wine to the altar table. This would just need to be con-firmed with an usher or other Mass representative, i.e. that you made the intention and would like to bring up the gifts.
