Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

Rev. Canon Michael K. Wiener Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Oakland

Canon Wiener - (510) 909-9841 or [email protected]

YOU ARE AT SAINT MARGARET MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH HUB OF THE LATIN MASS LITURGY IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

The Traditional Latin Mass (now called by the Holy Father: Mass in the Extraordinary Form) is brought to you through the ministry of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST?

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the ser-vice of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, to Whom the Institute is consecrated.

Recognizing the importance of a deep harmony between faith, liturgy, life, and the power of beauty in attracting the human senses to the

things above, an integral part of the Institute’s charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Great care for a solemn liturgy, complete fidelity to the doctrine of the Church and the Holy Father, and awareness of the central role of Grace, especially Charity – these are essential elements of the Institute’s spirituality, which is drawn from its three co-patrons, St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales.

Our motto is “Live the truth in charity." The Institute operates in more than fifty places in twelve countries, where our priests focus on the care of souls in many different ways. To assist our priests in their apostolic work, the Institute also has clerical oblates. In 2004, a community of religious sisters was canonically estab-lished to aid the priests in their mission through prayer and apostolic work.

The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach. Today, the motherhouse and international seminary of the Institute is located in Gricigliano, in the Archdiocese of Florence, Italy.

The Institute serves the faithful of the Bay since 2005 at St. Margaret Mary in Oakland and at Five Wounds in San Jose (Mass at 12:30 pm on Sunday, 12:15 pm on Weekdays but Sat. at 7:30 am)

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Couples who are celebrating their wedding anniversary, and parents who are expecting a child, may ask one of the priests of the Parish for a bless-ing. ● Parish Library Book Review: If you want a simple way to consecrate your-self to Our Blessed Mother Mary, but don’t know how (or why you should), the Parish librarian, Mrs. Lily Mullen, recommends 33 Days to Morning Glo-ry: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat in Preparation for Marian Consecration, by Fr Michael E Gaitley, MIC. Fr. Gaitley masterfully summarizes the teach-ings of St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and St. John Paul II about the importance of consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This book is easy to understand and simple enough to put into practice. More specifically, he weaves their thought into a user-friendly, do-it-

As last year, we’d like to mark the occasion with a reception after Masses. If you would like to help with the reception, please notify the Parish Office. Or, you may also contact the Parish Office at [email protected] or (510) 482-0596. ● We are in need of volunteers from this De-cember to May of next year to prepare and serve lunch for the monthly Holy Hour For Priests. This is held on the 3rd Fridays every month. It’s ideal if 2-3 people work together. Get some friends and/or family and share the tasks, or Lily Mullen can find others for you to work with. There are usually 8-12 priests from the Diocese who attend. The simple meatless meal can be prepared in the Hall’s kitchen or at your home, and brought in; then served. Please contact Lily Mullen at [email protected] or call the Parish office for more information, or to put your name on the schedule. Thank you. ● Save the date: Day of Reflection For Men: November 16th (Saturday) beginning with the 10am Mass. Focus of reflection will be “Into The Breach,” a pastoral letter from Bishop Thomas Olmstead, Bishop of Phoenix. ●

Early in the third century, Callistus, then a deacon, was intrusted by Pope St. Zephyrinus with the rule of the clergy, and set by him over the cemeteries of the Christians at Rome; and, at the death of Zephyrinus, Callistus, according to the Roman usage, succeeded to the Apostolic See. During the persecution under the Emperor Severus, St. Callistus was driven to take shelter in the poor and populous quarters of the city; yet, in spite of these troubles, and of the care of the Church, he made diligent search for the body of Calipodius, one of his clergy who had suffered mar-tyrdom shortly before, by being cast into the Tiber. When he had found it he was full of joy, and buried it, with hymns of praise. Callistus was martyred Oc-tober 14th, 223.

Temperance & Self-Mastery The years of adolescence offer new opportu-nities to instill the virtue of temperance. Adolescents have greater maturity, which facilitates the acquisi-tion of virtue. Virtues require interiorizing habits of behavior and motives, freely deciding to do some-thing good and carrying it out. Although young chil-dren can get used to doing good things, it is only when they reach a certain intellectual and emotional maturity that they can go deeper into the meaning of their own actions and evaluate their consequences. It is important to explain to adolescents the reason for certain ways of acting that young people perhaps perceive as only matters of form, or for cer-tain limits to their conduct that they might see as mere prohibitions. In the final analysis, we need to give them good reasons why it is worthwhile to be temperate. For example, in most cases it would not be convincing to speak about the need to be temperate (above all in the area of entertainment that gets in the way of study) in order to ensure success in one’s fu-ture career. Although this is a legitimate reason, it focuses on a distant reality that isn’t of immediate interest for many young people. It is more effective to show how the virtue of temperance is attractive here and now, drawing on the magnanimous ideals that fill their hearts, their great loves: generosity towards the needy, loyalty to their friends, and so on. We should never fail to point out that the temperate and self-controlled person is the one best able to help others. Those who are mas-ters of themselves have marvelous possibilities to dedicate themselves to the service of God and neigh-bor, and thus attain the greatest happiness and peace possible here on earth. Furthermore, adolescence offers new opportu-nities to be self-controlled and temperate. The natural curiosity of someone who is awakening to all the pos-sibilities in life is enhanced by a new sense of domin-ion over the future. An eagerness to experience and try out everything arises, which easily becomes iden-tified with freedom. Young people at this age want to feel somehow free from constraint, and could even view any reference to a timetable, order, study, lim-ited expenses, etc. as “unfair impositions.” (By J. De la Vega, J.M. Martin)

Declaration of the truths relating to some of the most common errors in the life of the Church of our time Explanatory Note (continuation) In the spirit of fraternal charity, we publish this Declaration of truths as a concrete spiritual help, so that bishops, priests, parishes, religious convents, lay faithful associations, and private persons as well might have the opportunity to confess either privately or publicly those truths that in our days are mostly de-nied or disfigured. The following exhortation of the Apostle Paul should be understood as addressed also to each bishop and lay faithful of our time, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, to keep the commandment unstained and free from re-proach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Tim. 6: 12 - 14). Before the eyes of the Divine Judge and in his own conscience, each bishop, priest, and lay faithful has the moral duty to give witness unambiguously to those truths that in our days are obfuscated, under-mined, and denied. Private and public acts of a decla-ration of these truths could initiate a movement of a confession of the truth, of its defense, and of repara-tion for the widespread sins against the Faith, for the sins of hidden and open apostasy from Catholic Faith of a not small number both of the clergy and of the lay people. One has to bear in mind, however, that such a movement will not judge itself according to numbers, but according to the truth, as Saint Gregory of Nazian-zus said, amidst the general doctrinal confusion of the Arian crisis, that “God does not delight in num-bers” (Or. 42:7). In giving witness to the immutable Catholic Faith, clergy and faithful will remember the truth that “the entire body of the faithful cannot err in matters of belief. They manifest this special property by means of the whole peoples' supernatural discernment in matters of faith, when from the Bishops down to the last of the lay faithful they show universal agreement in matters of faith and morals” (Second Vatican Coun-cil, Lumen gentium, 12). (By Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Cardinal Janis Pujats, Arch-bishop, Tomash Peta, Archbishop Jan Pawel Lenga, Archbishop Athanasius Schneider)

Thank you to all volunteers, gracious donors and guests! We thank wholeheartedly all volunteers who helped to make the celebrations on the occasion Abbe Kevin’s

40th birthday a full success and another example of Californian hospitality. Abbe Kevin would like to express

his deep-felt personal gratitude, not only for the gifts he received on this occasion, but also for the many signs

of your attachment to the Institute’s clergy. He enjoyed and cherishes his time at St. Margaret Mary very much

and he will miss you all deeply.

Last Sunday’s reception on the occasion of the farewell for Canon Meney and my welcoming was another

great success for the Sunday reception team. The volunteers worked very hard and under difficult time con-

straints and managed to set up a wonderful display of exquisite foods and drinks. Thank you for your dedicat-

ed work on behalf of all of us. Our thanks go as well to many donors who provided the high quality finger

foods which are always the signature of the receptions at this Californian apostolate of our dear Institute.

(Please keep the members of our reception crews in your prayers and consider to be a part of this remarkable

and well organized service to our community.)

Canon Meney, Abbe Kevin and I were personally very touched by the presence of so many among you. Your
