25th SUNDAY of PENTECOST(Scriptural text below taken from www.usccb.org/bible, United States Conference of Catholic Bish-ops)

EPISTLE: EPHESIANS 4:1-6

I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

GOSPEL: LUKE 10:25-37

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He ap-proached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ Which of these three, in your opin-ion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

A BYZANTINE SENSE OF TIME: On Thursday comes St. Philip’s Fast, our Byzantine Advent!

Originally known as Filipovka in the Carpatho-Rusyn roots of our Byzantine Catho-lic Church, the season of St. Philip’s Fast reminds us that Byzantine Catholics historically have prepared for the great feasts in the liturgical year by periods of abstinence, additional prayer, and fasting, with the major – but not only - example being Great and Holy Lent as an anticipation of Pascha (a.k.a. Easter). In that vein, we wish to raise that consciousness among all our parish-ioners. Knowing that we will swim against the tide of the “holiday season” that seems to begin earlier and earlier, the point remains that we are called to prepare first for the birthday of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in our anticipation of Christmas, to welcome the Christ Child in our lives.

To the end of making our hearts and our homes worthy to receive the Incarnation on His Nativity as committed Byzantine Catholics, please be advised that St. Philip’s Fast begins this year on Thursday, November 15. We will start serving Vespers on Friday evenings at 7 p.m., starting on November 16 and you are all welcome!

On Fridays, we should abstain from all meats. However, let us thank Bishop JOHN, our eparch, for renewing graciously the exemption historically given to Byzantine Catholics in our eparchy for the Friday after Thanksgiving Day or Nov. 23. Vespers will not be celebrated that day either.

Look out for announcements at Divine Liturgy and through our bulletin and website regarding a series of Advent conferences to be provided to us by Msgr. Kevin McAuliffe in December.

Finally, St. Philip’s Fast is an excellent time to clean your heart, mind, soul, and body via the Mystery of Repentance (a.k.a. the Sacrament of Confession) as an offering to the Christ Child and to welcome Him at Holy Communion! Indeed, that is the best gift that you can give to Christ on His birthday. If you cannot make it to confess on our parish’s schedule, then kindly call one of our priests at (602) 943-5379 to make an appointment!

While the “holiday season” may be beginning shortly and ending on Christmas Day, we Byzantine Catholics know that Christ is the Reason for the Season! Thus in our calendar, the Christmas season begins on Christmas Eve and ends on December 31, the Leave-taking of the Nativity. Let us (re)discover the treasure of St. Philip’s Fast, the “Byzantine Advent”, as we look forward to the joy of God-With-Us at Christmas. LET’S START THANKSGIVING DAY RIGHT: Div. Liturgy with Bp. GERALD+ on Nov. 22 at 9 a.m.

Although our ancestors may not be the Pilgrims who landed in Massachusetts centuries ago, we Byzantines are aware acutely that we are pilgrims in this life, hopefully towards holiness in this life and then to Heaven. In that vein, let us join our spiritual father emeritus, Bishop GER-ALD+, in thanksgiving to God at the Divine Liturgy. Also, we urge our parents and grandparents to start the lunch or dinner later that day with prayers of remembrance and praise of God for His blessings.

DON’T BUY THE TURKEY JUST YET: G.C.U. Turkey Raffle for Thanksgiving For $1 a ticket or six tickets for $5, you might – just might – win one of four turkeys to be drawn on Sunday, November 18 after Divine Liturgy. If you want to learn more about how our lodge tries to make our parish a better community or other benefits of joining our nationwide Greek Catholic Union, kindly call Ms. Joanie Mahar at (602) 920-0607 or contact her at [email protected] Better yet, stop by TODAY at the lodge meeting in the parish hall after Divine Liturgy!
