In the gospel today, Jesus tells us a parable about the landowner and his workers: those hired at midmorning, those hired halfway through the day at noon, those hired at four o'clock, one hour before the day is over. And then he tells us how he paid them, first those who had worked one hour, then those who worked for five hours, then those who had worked for seven hours, and finally those who had worked the whole day. All of them were paid the same daily wage. And those who worked the whole day protested, saying: "Those last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and heat." And the owner answered them, "My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Are you envious because I am generous?" Jesus' parable today is not intended to give a moral guidance on labor-management negotiations or any justification for uncontrolled capitalism. Jesus tells us how God deals with people and how this is very different from human ways. His relationship with us considers much more than justice. The parable provides us food for thought on how to avoid the power of ENVY and GREED! The workers are dissatisfied not with what they received, but because others received as much. The workers might call their grievances just, but they were motivated by envy! Envy is a social sin as well as a personal one. Envy's cousin is jealousy. However, "jealousy can be based on attraction (of an object); envy originates in hatred (for people). But envy goes beyond hatred. When we hate, we want to demolish what we see as bad; but with envy, we want to destroy what's good in people's lives. Envious people live in a perpetual state of focusing on what others around them have and what they themselves lack - mostly material things: big houses, fancy cars, stylish clothes, the best brands. We can be tempted to envy also when we see former sinners attain positions of eminence and when we observe people who are less talented than us advance in their careers. Envy can have a dehumanizing effect on those who are guilty of it…" The landowner's evocative response becomes an antidote to hunger for material positions, when he said, "ARE YOU ENVIOUS BECAUSE I AM GENEROUS?" God is generous; and his generosity is without measure - he is so extravagant in his love and mercy. We have to imitate God's generosity to remove envy in our lives. GENEROSITY is an antidote to envy! Are you an envious person? If yes, today is the day for you to take the medicine of GENEROSITY!

The very first line of today’s first reading summons us to seek the Lord and to call upon God. This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today’s responsorial psalm: “The Lord is near to all who call upon him” (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul toward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, “For to me life is Christ” (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ we need look no further than today’s Gospel. There we find that God’s love and mercy are immeasurable for all those who seek and call upon the Lord. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Caring Conversations

All of us face aging and the need to make plans for our futures. We have to make decisions about many aspects of our lives. These legal and health care decisions protect us from others making decisions for our care and other end of life issues that we might not want. They also protect family and loved ones by giving them guidance in the care that we would like to receive. Most people would agree that when the time comes, they want a “good death.” But what that means is all too often left up in the air until a crisis strikes or the stricken person is no longer able to communicate his wishes, or his advance planning documents are not clear. When that happens, spouses, adult children, siblings and others find themselves in the unenviable role of surrogate decision-makers, trying to divine, sometimes with very few facts and under very emotional circumstances, what the person they love would have decided to do if they were able to choose. The first four Sundays of October at 6:30pm, St. Agnes Church is sponsoring ‘Caring Conversations about End of Life Decisions’. The idea is to be able to clearly think about these issues before decisions have to be made. Please save the dates for these Sunday presentations in October:

Sunday, October 1: Attitudes about Death – What would you do? Starting Caring Conversation: tips for talking! Sunday, October 8: Technology & Dying – Patients’ Rights Hospice & Palliative Sunday, October 15: The Value of Grief Durable Power of Attorney & Living Wills Sunday, October 22: Catholic Church Traditions and Funeral Liturgies

Presenters include Dr. Vincent Bjorling; Tom Perkins, Ph.D.: Dr. William Packard; Phil Kelly, Attorney; Linda Rock; Rev. Vincent Parsons; and Representatives from Joliffe Funeral Home and Dugan Kramer Funeral Home These FREE sessions are for all who are living and expect someday to make the transition from death into eternal life. Anyone, at the time of their death, can give a great gift to those they leave behind by having their end-of-life decisions already made. These informative sessions will prepare you to do that. Please use the south doors of the church to access the Garden Room.

“We’ve had the best time, lots of fun, no regrets,” is how Lucien and Margaret Kicken describe their marriage. Lucien and Margaret were married June 30, 1956 at St. Theresa’s in Mitchell, NE by Father Pelster. Their favorite memory of their wedding is of the family dinner held at the family farm for 40 members. Margaret’s mom did the cooking. Margaret went to nursing school in Minot, North Dakota at 16, right out of high school. After she completed nursing school, she worked at St. Mary’s in Scottsbluff and boarded with her grandmother. Lucien worked on a ranch in Sheridan County. There was not much to do besides work on the ranch, so he would go to town on Saturday evenings to dance. Margaret just happened to be on a three-month exchange in Alliance when they met at the dance. They began dating each other.

A lesson that has been valuable to them is that when an opportunity presents itself—TAKE IT. They love to travel. The Kickens have traveled extensively – Alaska twice, Europe five times, Sweden. They took their former classmate, Fr. Deaver to Ireland. Last year they completed the Nebraska Passport program. They made it to all 80 destinations. This year they intend to participate in the program, but are focusing on the breweries and wineries. The Kickens were interested in travel to Europe as Lucien was drafted in 1950 but was never sent to Korea; rather he was sent as a truck driver to Verdon, France—20 miles from the place his dad was born. They have visited relatives during their trips to Europe. A favorite memory of the St. Agnes community is of the eight families who did many activities together including praying the rosary at each other’s homes, Scouts, the Christian Family Movement, and soup suppers. There were 30 children among the families. Both Kickens said they were too busy raising six children to have hard times. They have six children: Mark, David, Mary, Teresa, Emily and Louis. They have 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Their final thoughts were “What a wonderful, thankful time we’ve had.” -by Mary Robinson

Once upon a time, there were two young members of a little parish, Fred, and Sadie. Sadie’s and Fred’s parents, strong in their faith, raised them as Catholics throughout Sadie’s and Fred’s school years. They both entered kindergarten at the same time and graduated from high school together. However, as they graduated from high school, the two friends had different ideas about how much God should continue to be part of their lives. Sadie sustained the Catholic tradition she had learned as a child. She prayed throughout her workday day giving praise for the little miracles she encountered and asking the Lord for assistance in the battles where she struggled to maintain her Catholic dignity. Sadie attended daily Mass and frequently sought Reconciliation. Sadie contributed her time and talents to the community and continued her financial support to the church even when she had to miss a meal or put off buying clothes. Taking into account all her virtuous acts, Sadie fully expected the Lord to welcome her into heaven with open arms upon her death.

Fred, once free to make his own decisions that his parents had once done regarding his faith, quit attending Mass except maybe on rare occasion at Christmas or Easter to please his mother. He never entered the confessional after receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in his senior year of high school. There were just too many “important things” to experience, to let Jesus interfere with Fred’s life. Since Fred hardly ever came to Mass, he gave no money to support the church. The pleas for assistance to help in parish or community activities fell on deaf ears. As Fred separated himself from the Lord, he fell victim to materialism, followed by a disregard of the Ten Commandments. While Fred didn’t break all the commandments, well, let’s just say he came close. Fred had no relationship with Lord because it never entered his mind as his focus was on “the important” things in life.

After long but vastly different lives, Sadie and Fred found themselves in adjacent hospital rooms each suffering from a terminal disease. In rediscovering their childhood friendship, Sadie and Fred reminisced about their lives; Sadie talked about her devotion to the Lord and Fred about his life of thrills and extravagant living. Sadie remarked to Fred, in preparing for her death, she had called the parish priest to come to the hospital to give her the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Sadie also said she would be praying for Fred during the final days of his life. Fred reflected on his life, long into the night, after listening to the devotion that Sadie had for the Lord. He became remorseful about his negligence in following the faith and determined that he needed to ask forgiveness from the Lord for his sinful ways. Fred requested from the priest visiting Sadie to also receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.

Both Fred and Sadie died within moments of each other and found themselves entering into Purgatory. Fred was most grateful that the Lord has taken him into Purgatory after the sinful life he had led. Sadie, on the other hand, did not understand why she had not gained immediate entrance to heaven. Sadie believed she had done everything right, she had followed the Ten Commandments and precepts of the church, but even with all of that, she was only in Purgatory. Even more distressing was that Fred, who had never made the same effort, was in Purgatory with her. Sadie mused “All of that hard work in my attempt to gain salvation, and it was for nothing. I could have been like Fred who didn’t do anything but got the same thing I did. How could the Lord be so unfair to me?”

It is then that the gentle of voice the Lord said to Sadie, “Sadie my dear child, nothing that you did was in vain. For you see not only did you save your soul, but you also saved the soul of Fred. It was through your dedication to me over your lifetime, which brought conversion to Fred. How blessed are you that you, like My Son, brought a lost sheep back to the fold.” “Sadie you have honored me throughout your life. Salvation is not a race or a competition for those who wish to enter my Kingdom. There is room for all my children. Your stop here is only to begin enjoying with me at the threshold of Paradise, where the light will be brighter than the Sun and the beauty will be greater than anything that you have seen on earth. For it is in my time, not yours, that you will receive the fullness of my grace. Be patient after all; we will have eternity together. ”

Blessed are those who listen to the Lord and repent, even at the moment of death. Blessed are those who dedicate their lives to the Lord who shows us the way to come home. May God Bless You,

From the Seminary

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Matthew 20:8-15

On the Way to Mass: What does it mean to be fair? How is this different from being generous? On the Way Home From Mass: When and where have you experienced God’s loving abundance? Living the Word: Talk to your family about inviting someone to the “vineyard” of God’s love. Everyone could brainstorm, considering if a friend, neighbor, or family member might feel left out. Make plans this week to invite that person(s) to lunch, the park, or your house. What can you do to show the unlimited abundance of God’s love. Tell them to remember that God’s love is a gift that is given to us, no matter what we have done or where we have been.

Raising the Bar with

the Faith and Life series! Each week a grade will be featured in the bulletin outlining the curriculum. This week First Grade is featured. Our Heavenly Father is the title of the First Grade curriculum. This year the first graders will be introduced to the Holy Trinity through studying the development of salvation history and presentations on God the Father, the life of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Students are also introduced to God’s plan and their participation in God’s family, which includes Mary, the angels, and the saints. The emphasis of the first grade curriculum is for the students to grow to know, love, and trust God. Each student will receive a textbook and an activity book that will be used this year. The books are to go home each Sunday and come back the next Sunday. Please take time during the week to review what your child(ren) learned this week in the religious formation sessions. Also, spend time this week helping prepare your child(ren) for upcoming weeks lesson. A syllabus is being provided to each student so parents can stay apprised as to the lesson that will be covered on a specific date.

Parent Talk:

I didn’t like what I was hearing from my girls. Tessa said, “I am so dumb. I can’t do anything right.” Kara said, “I’m such a klutz. I keep dropping

everything.” I hated hearing such negative self talk. The next morning I wrote a Bible verse on an index card and posted it in the kitchen. We stood in

front of it and read, “You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works!"(Psalm 139:13). It’s a reminder that God created each of us deliberately and out of love. Our assignment was to repeat the verse daily that week until we memorized it. Each week, I will post a different verse for us to learn about God’s love and care. Our minds will soon be filled with God’s word, leaving no room for negativity.

Children's Liturgy of the Word is a program that invites school-aged children (kindergarten through grade 5) to leave the larger parish assembly during Mass to celebrate a concurrent Liturgy of the Word. The children return to the main parish assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The children experience the same readings and rituals as the larger parish assembly, but use a special children's lectionary with a reflection experience geared for their age group. If you are interested in sharing your time and talents once a month with the children, please contact: Terri at 635-1362 or Email- [email protected] The Religious Education Program will be using the Remind communion tool this year. You may have received a notification to sign-up already. With this tool you will be able to choose how you see messages with notifications on your phone, email, or computer. If you have any questions regarding this program please call or Email the RE Office.

What does the ministry of Altar Servers consist of? Simply put, our altar servers assist the priest at Mass. They take part in carry the cross or candles in procession, hold the book for the presider’s prayers, assist with setting and removing things to and from the altar table, and serve as role models for participation in the mass. Who can be an Altar Server? Here at St. Agnes, altar servers consist of boys and girls from our parish who are grades 3rd - 12th and have been trained. Altar Server Training will be held following all weekend Masses October 7th & 8th. This training is for new and ongoing servers. Feasts & Celebrations Sept. 19 – St. Januarius (304). Bishop of Benevento, Italy, during a time of great persecution, Januarius visited Christians in prison and was arrested. He and his companions were beheaded. Sept. 26 – Saints Cosmas and Damian (303). These saints were two Arab brothers who studied medicine in Syria and lived their Christian faith by treating people without charge. Unfortunately, this was during a time of persecution and such virtue made them targets of persecution. They were martyred for their faith. They are the patron saints of physicians. Sept. 29 – Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Archangels. Members of the third hierarchy of angels around the throne of God, archangels are entrusted with important missions to mankind, such as St. Gabriel’s visit to the Blessed Mother to tell her she had been chosen as the mother of God. Mrs. Svitak--2nd Grade

Library-Mrs. Payne

Here we are back at school for a month already. The children have se led nicely into our rou ne. They are discovering that in second grade we have more work to accomplish and not much me to socialize. In Reading, we are already close to finishing our first unit. That means a test soon. The children have worked hard each day learning new skills to help them decode words and also learning new vocabulary that goes with each story. In Math, we have learned to show informa on on a graph, tell me to the hour, write two-digit numbers, iden fied ordinal po-si ons from first to twel h, solved problems by ac ng them out, and telling if a number is odd or even. Looking ahead we will be learning to divide a shape in half, what a ribute means, and what a polygon is. In Religion, we have been learning about the Trinity. This is o en confusing to children as well as adults. We are also learning about Original Sin and the forgiveness God offers to all of us. In Science, we are learning about the differences between the kinds of animals, as well as the needs of plants and animals. I have also included a mini unit on the ocean and the animals that live there. It is always a favorite! They got to watch a video of Sea World's Orca show. I was lucky enough to get to see it this summer. It sparked a lively discussion about the controversy around keeping the orcas in cap vity. There were some mixed opinions on this topic. Happy September birthday to Zach Mark, Aaden Gonzales, and Morgan Celli.

Greeting From St. Agnes Library! Hello! My name is Lana Payne and I am the Librar-ian this year. I love being in the Library where I can spend time with all the students at St. Agnes. I am get-ting to know what they enjoy reading and I am having fun reading to them during their Library time. Students have been checking out books and working on their Read-ing Incentive goals and projects. They are also enjoying reading with buddies in the two reading tents in the Li-brary. I am still learning everyone's name and the stu-dents have been very kind during this process! New to the Library this year will be “The Artist of the Month.” St. Agnes is very privileged to have an original piece of art, hanging in the Library, painted by the well known local artist, Audrey Towater. During Sep-tember, this painting, along with five others by Towater, are on display in the Library. Towater always did her paintings on the spot, when and where events where hap-pening. Her works can be found in museums and private collections around the world. Next time you're visiting our beautiful State Capitol, look for her painting of the State Capitol hanging in its halls. Looking forward to next month, the Library will be hosting the annual Book Fair. This is an exciting event for students! It will take place the week of October 23-27, also the week of Parent Teacher Conferences. There will be more information about the Book Fair in the weeks ahead. This is an important event for the Library! Please plan to attend!

Music has begun and we are already having so much fun! We are preparing for many musical events that will be happening this school year! Younger ages are grasping what music really is and how we can find steady beats in every song! From steady beat to dy-namics, they are working hard and learning quickly! Older ages have begun working hard on learning how to read music, which by the way is no easy task!

This year, Singspira ons (4th and 5th grade show choir,) will be compe ng in Old West Show Choir Fes -val! This will be a new and exci ng experience for these students, and they have already learned one en re song- choreography and all. J All of the students, (and myself!) are so excited for this event! This year will be filled with lots of different musical events, so stay tuned!
