WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT GRACE OF GOD

God embraces us in love when and where we are most weak and frail. He also calls us to do

the same for each other. We gather today to receive strength from his grace in Word and

Sacrament. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you’re here!

Small children are welcome in worship

“Busy bags” for young children are available in the classroom adjacent to the worship space

near the doors. That room also has a speaker to hear the worship service.

Welcome

Confession and Forgiveness (stand and face the processional cross)

Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Pastor: Let us come before God, seeking forgiveness and life.

(Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination)

Pastor: Steadfast and saving God,

People: have mercy on us.

In so many ways we cause or suffer brokenness: envy, ambition, conflict, boasting, hard

hearts, lashing tongues, neglect of our neighbor’s needs. In your compassion, forgive our

sins and heal our hurts. Bring forth from us a harvest of righteousness, the fruits of

gentleness and peace, the sheaves of love and joy in your presence; through Jesus Christ,

our Savior and Lord. Amen

Pastor: God's love in Christ is healing balm for your wounds. In the name of + Jesus, the Son of God,

receive mercy and find grace in your time of need. Because of his death and resurrection, your

transgressions are forgiven.

People: Amen

_____________________________ SERVICE OF THE WORD _____________________________

First Reading Isaiah 53:4-12

4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,

yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;

he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,

so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.

And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living;

for the transgression of my people he was stricken. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death,

though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the LORD’S will to crush him and cause him to suffer,

and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days,

and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. 11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied;

by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong,

because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors.

For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Second Reading Hebrews 5:1-10

1 Every high priest is selected from among men and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts

and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is

subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So Christ also did not take upon

himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him,

“You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” 6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” 7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could

save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience

from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was

designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Holy Gospel Mark 10:35-45

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 10th chapter.

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am

baptized with?” 39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right

or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.” 41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know

that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first

must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for

many.”

Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Prayers

Pastor: Hear us, O God.

People: Your mercy is great.

Sharing of the Peace

Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

People: And also with you.

Offering

Offertory Prayer

Pastor: Let us pray.

People: Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with

blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts,

ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and

Lord. Amen

__________________________ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT __________________________

Invitation to the Meal

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Pastor: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and

praise to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. You sent your only Son to suffer and die

as a ransom for many to become for us the source of eternal salvation. By his resurrection you have

given us new life through faith in him. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of

heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

8

Sanctus (“Holy, holy, holy”)

Pastor: You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your

glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may

not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your

holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation.

Words of Institution

Pastor: For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

All sing:

Pastor: To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever.

All sing:

Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

9

Agnus Dei (“Lamb of God”)

Communion Distribution

Scripture says, “Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim the Lord’s death until he

comes.” 1 Corinthians 11:26. Martin Luther’s Small Catechism says, “Holy Communion is the true body

and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us

Christians to eat and drink.” All baptized Christians who have been instructed in this confession of faith

and who share our belief that the body and blood of Jesus are truly present in the bread and wine for

the forgiveness of sins are invited to the Lord’s Table today. Children who have not received their first

communion are invited to come forward for a blessing.

As you approach the table down the center aisle, receive an empty cup from the cart. (Non-alcoholic white grape juice is in pre-

filled cups for those who cannot drink wine. These cups are marked in the rack)

Proceed to the left or the right and gather around the altar.

After each gathered group has communed, they are dismissed in peace.

As you return to your seat down the side aisles, place your cup in the racks on the tables.

Grace of God Charter Sunday

Reformation Day is special to all Lutheran Christians because this is the day Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses on

So . . . we will celebrate!

We play today at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in St. Paul at 3:00 pm. All skill levels welcome – this is a very

casual, but fun church league! Youth aged 8th grade and older are eligible to play on our Grace of God team!

(Spectators are also welcome!)
