Feast of St. Augustine

This Tuesday, August 28th, we celebrate our patron, Saint Augustine. Born in 354 in Thagaste - now Algeria - in North Africa, Aurelius Augustinus was the son of Monica, a devout Christian and Patricius, a pagan who converted to Christianity on his deathbed. Augustine was well educated and at the age of 17 went to Carthage to pursue his education in rhetoric. He was regarded as a brilliant student whose mastery of Latin enabled him to use the language eloquently, specifically in forming clever arguments to make his points. He and his friends lived a hedonistic lifestyle and, at the age of 19, he began an affair with a woman which lasted 15 years, during which time they had a son, Adeodatus.

Raised as a Christian, Augustine left the faith to practice the Manichaean religion, to his mother's disappointment. At the age of 30 he had established himself as one of the finest professors of rhetoric and, now living in Rome, was asked to teach in the court of Milan, one of the highest positions known at the time for a teacher and one which he accepted. Around this same time, having become disillusioned with the Manichaean religion, he found himself being pulled ever more back to Christianity. In Milan, he became acquainted with Ambrose, another master of rhetoric, and a Christian whose adherence to and teaching of the faith would have a significant and lasting influence on Augustine. Meanwhile, Monica had followed Augustine to Milan where she arranged a marriage for him. He reluctantly gave up his mistress, whom he loved. Ultimately he would never marry as he experienced a profound conversion to Christianity and he and his son were baptized by Ambrose in 387.

In 391 he was ordained a priest and became well known for his sermons as well as his arguments against the Manichaeans. Shortly after he became a priest, he established a monastery for a community of lay followers and wrote a Rule by which they would live. In 395 he became Bishop of Hippo. He was a prolific writer and preacher who worked tirelessly to convert the people of Hippo to Christianity. He died on August 28, 430. He was made a Doctor of the Church in 1298 and is also known by the title Doctor of Grace. His Confessions and City of God are two of his most famous and enduring works, just as relevant for lay people today as they were when he wrote them. He is extensively quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, sore eyes, and of St. Augustine Church in Andover MA.

St. Augustine Parish, Andover, MA

On Sunday, September 16th Sr. Joan will gather with us following the 10 AM Mass at St. Joseph to enjoy refreshments and to say “goodbye” and receive a “thank you” from us. Over twelve years ago, Sr. Joan answered the call, from then Director of Music Anita Massie, to play at the 10 AM Mass. (Anita had been Sr. Joan’s top piano student!) This past winter, Sr. Joan was called by her order to serve elsewhere in her community but because it happened while St. Joseph Church was closed for the season, there was no opportunity to say goodbye. Be sure to sign the card that Klara Vajda has circulating at St. Joseph. Sr. Joan’s tenure with us is a perfect example of how answering the call to service in the Church can result in many joyful years of providing beautiful music and dedication within the St Augustine community. Thank you Sr Joan!

The Divorced & Separated Ministry of St. Augustine Parish, open to men and women of all denominations, offers the chance to meet, sort out feelings, and work towards healing for those who feel lonely, helpless, or hopeless due to a troubled marriage, separation, or divorce. Meets Thursdays 7-9:30pm in St. Rita Hall (lower level of the church). For info: Bob Whirty - [email protected], 978-360-5222, Annie Cummings [email protected] 978-397-7411, or Klara Vajda [email protected] 508-265-3883.

Our Parish Playgroup meets weekly at local parks for fun and fellowship (unless it's raining)! We do have a lot of fun! Please join us! This week we will meet Friday August 31 and Saturday, September 1 (9:30-11:30am) at Drummond Playground on Johnson Street in North Andover. Schedules can be found on flyers in the back of the church and on the parish website StAugustineParish.org/Playgroup. For info: Amie at [email protected] or Jacqueline at [email protected].

Adult Faith Programs - Starting Soon!

“The Blessed Nest” is a prayer group for mothers whose family dynamic is shifting as children approach the completion of high school/college and "leave the nest.” Through prayer, readings, short videos and discussion, the group will seek to foster fellowship through faith in this transitional period of parenthood. We meet monthly from September to May on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 1 PM in the parish center beginning Wednesday, September 12th. For more information or to register, contact Monica Gallacher [email protected]. Hope you can join us! The Gospel According to John - In this 28-week study learn why John’s Gospel has the most profound theology of the four Gospels, understand its unique focus on a Christian understanding of the family and why love constitutes the New Law and how to draw closer to Christ from John's example. Tuesdays, beginning October 16th, 1-2:30pm, $55 fee covers materials. Register by emailing [email protected].

The Parish CAP Team Wants You to Know About Online Child Safety

In June 2000, a study titled “Online Victimization” was conducted for the U.S. Department of Justice which found that in the preceding year through the internet: approximately one in five children had received a sexual solicitation or approach, one in four children had unwanted exposure to naked people or people having sex, one in 33 children had received an aggressive sexual solicitation—a solicitor who asked to meet them somewhere, called them on the telephone, or sent them mail, money, or gifts. With even more children in the United States accessing the internet today, these numbers are likely higher. Given the increasing pervasiveness of access to the internet, it is essential for parents, teachers, and members of the clergy to be knowledgeable and fluent in both the negative and the positive aspects of online activities. Parents, teachers, and members of the clergy must speak very openly about online child safety issues. For particular info: email [email protected], the Boston Archdiocese Office of Child Advocacy, Implementation, and Oversight.
